Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Craziest Tesco deal ever? 62 Avios for every 0.9p spent!

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

This new Tesco grocery deal is, frankly, mad.  I’m not even sure if Tesco will honour it or not.  It is worth a go though.

Tesco is offering 25 bonus Clubcard points for every purchase of ‘world vegetables’ you make.

Before we go much further, you should check if the store which arranges your deliveries (and which could be real or ‘dark’) and which you cannot amend – is eligible for this offer.

Click on this page.  If you are not logged in, no special offer will show.  If you then log-in and the page is still blank, the store which delivers to your house does not sell these ‘exotic’ items.  Sorry.

Let’s look at the offers available for delivery to my house.  I actually laughed when I saw the price of the first few.  You earn 25 Clubcard points for every item.

The ‘bonkers’ deals:

Tesco Rocket Chillies – 1p each (actually 0.9p)

Tesco Okra – 5p each (pictured above)

Tesco Eddoes – 19p each

Some stores, but not mine, appear to have baby aubergines at 13p

The ‘normal’ deals:

Tesco White Flesh Sweet Potatoes – 62p each

Tesco Plantain – 71p each

Tesco Mooli – 71p each

Tesco Cassava – £1.13 each

Tesco Dudhi – £1.31 each

Tesco Yams – £5.38 each

The screenshot below confirms that, for 50 x 1p chillies, I would receive 1,250 Clubcard points:

I know from the comments on the Tesco post yesterday that some people have already placed orders for 99 individual chillies which is the maximum allowed.  The 25 points per item DO show at checkout, so I am guessing that the points will post as long as the items are delivered.

This offer is theoretically also available in store, assuming your local store sells these.  Despite the posters being up, a couple of readers who tried yesterday did not get their points. It is not unusual for Tesco to have issues with new promotions – this one launched on Monday.

You can combine these items with the ‘1500 Clubcard points for a £60 grocery order’ that I reminded everyone about yesterday.

This offer runs until 22nd June – although it is hard to believe it will survive that long if they are effectively giving 62 Avios for every 1p you spend.

You could also convert your vouchers to another partner – theoretically you could spend £90 on chillies and Goldsmiths would give you a £7,500 Rolex …..  However, remember that Tesco is now capping Clubcard points at 30,000 per quarter.  If you earn more than this, it is likely (not guaranteed, but it definitely happens) that you will lose all of the points above 30,000.

  • Simon says:

I’ll check my statement tomorrow and see what points have actually been added before getting in touch, no harm in asking for the bonus points.

I’ve never known Tesco add promotional points in batches for grocery orders, the statement along the lines of they will appear before the end of quarter tends to be what they say to try to fob someone off in my experience.

  • Halo says:

I got my delivery this morning too. Zero points. They advise the 1500 for £60 was for First Time shoppers only. The chillis were substituted and price matched, so only cost 99p but no points.

  • Paul says:

Just re-read the story about the PC that god done for scanning blank paper as extra points vouchers. Is there any chance Tesco could (pardon the pun) try to get us in hot water for buying too many chillies? If so I might cancel a couple of orders.

    • nick says:

What you are doing is not fraudulent, so no . Think of it more like the most blatant abusive tax avoidance schemes where you play by the letter but not the spirit of the rules. I guess the worst they could do would be to pull your cc account- something they have done before with people who have abused the scheme.

    • chris says:

different things, making your own vouchers (when vouchers have clearly label use limits) is fraud

the self edge labels said nothing about how many times you could buy chillies, tho tescos can choose to remove points due to misuse from they T&C (fair use), they is nothing against the law

    • Paul says:

Thanks for the replies. I guess i’ll just have to wait and see. I have a new CC account which I opened recently so if they close it I’m not going to lose anything.
I’ll make sure to update here with whatever happens, so we know for the future.

  • RJSC says:

Just called Tesco Customer Service and given same reassurance as Max that points will post at a later date. Either they’re fobbing people off or this may still come good, only time will tell.

I’m definitely holding on to my order confirmation for a conversation at a later date though.

    • TimS says:

Not really sure how they can do this consistently though as if you bought 99 chillis in-store (for the same price as online), qualifying for the same offer & same CC points, unless you processed them through the till 1 chilli x 99 times there is no precise way of working out how many were purchased.

So how would/could they retrospectively award points to customers in that situation?

I expect they are just fobbing you off to be honest but best of luck getting the points and, as others have shown on here, sometimes if you keep pushing you will get the helpful staff member who will agree to your request for the extra points.

      • chris says:

most like they just fobbing everyone off

tho how they would do it is by the stores copy of the receipt / time log, that has your CC number on it, and see how many chilli ware put thu

        • TimS says:

But unless everything was scanned individually they won’t be able to tell. Veg is not a consistent weight so can’t be counted in the same way as tins of beans for example.

The number of chillis in 50g varies, and the number of okra probably varies even more!

          • chris says:

true but unless you scanned everything individually or at 2 at a time for min weight to go thu, you wouldnt get the points for the extra items anyway

so most here would of therefor weighted each as a single item

          • Amanda says:

Yesterday I scanned 41 different bags of qualifying products. I got a total of 25 bonus points. Scanned 2 okra today and didnt get any additional points.
Dont expect to see any extra points on my statement either.
Perhaps we misunderstood the promotion, perhaps it was only available for first purchase of these lines…..

          • Rob says:

No, it seems Tesco has pulled it completely

  • Liam Kirkham says:

My order just arrived containing (amongst other things):
    99 okra
    99 baby aubergines
    99 eddoes

The receipt said no bonus points so I have the driver the veg back and kept the rest.

I guess from the sound of it there’s a chance tescos might honour the points in the future with a retro credit but I can’t be bothered to take the nearly £40 risk….
    Good luck to others!

  • aceman says:

just got my order, missed the delivery, but the driver left it with the building guys. Forgot I’d ticked green delivery, no chillis came, individual okra were substituted for packets of okra, no eddoes . So now I have no points, a bugger load of okra, irritated building supervisors and a large bloody tesco plastic delivery crate. Me thinks an email to CS will be happening imminently….

  • Jonny says:

Picking up my order after work – not too hopeful though did request in my notes that I’d like the Okra / Eddoes etc to be priced individually so as to take advantage of the bonus points, but lets see.

If I reject them the order will fall below £25 – do you know if they will retrospectively apply the £4 “below £25 order” charge?

    • Jonny says:

just looking at what’s pending on my amex statement, looks like they’ve taken off all the veg… oh wekk

  • steveuk says:

Well, my Tesco delivery has just arrived, including the 99 chillies I ordered! At least I think they are 99! The receipt shows Quantity as “Loose” and I was charged £0.70 for them, instead of £0.89 that appeared on the order form.

    Total cost of shopping: £61.25
Total points this visit: 1587 (I used the 1500 points when spending more than £60 promotion).

    So … it would appear I didn’t get 25 per chilli 🙁

    Anyone know any good recipes?
