Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Craziest Tesco deal ever? 62 Avios for every 0.9p spent!

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

This new Tesco grocery deal is, frankly, mad.  I’m not even sure if Tesco will honour it or not.  It is worth a go though.

Tesco is offering 25 bonus Clubcard points for every purchase of ‘world vegetables’ you make.

Before we go much further, you should check if the store which arranges your deliveries (and which could be real or ‘dark’) and which you cannot amend – is eligible for this offer.

Click on this page.  If you are not logged in, no special offer will show.  If you then log-in and the page is still blank, the store which delivers to your house does not sell these ‘exotic’ items.  Sorry.

Let’s look at the offers available for delivery to my house.  I actually laughed when I saw the price of the first few.  You earn 25 Clubcard points for every item.

The ‘bonkers’ deals:

Tesco Rocket Chillies – 1p each (actually 0.9p)

Tesco Okra – 5p each (pictured above)

Tesco Eddoes – 19p each

Some stores, but not mine, appear to have baby aubergines at 13p

The ‘normal’ deals:

Tesco White Flesh Sweet Potatoes – 62p each

Tesco Plantain – 71p each

Tesco Mooli – 71p each

Tesco Cassava – £1.13 each

Tesco Dudhi – £1.31 each

Tesco Yams – £5.38 each

The screenshot below confirms that, for 50 x 1p chillies, I would receive 1,250 Clubcard points:

I know from the comments on the Tesco post yesterday that some people have already placed orders for 99 individual chillies which is the maximum allowed.  The 25 points per item DO show at checkout, so I am guessing that the points will post as long as the items are delivered.

This offer is theoretically also available in store, assuming your local store sells these.  Despite the posters being up, a couple of readers who tried yesterday did not get their points. It is not unusual for Tesco to have issues with new promotions – this one launched on Monday.

You can combine these items with the ‘1500 Clubcard points for a £60 grocery order’ that I reminded everyone about yesterday.

This offer runs until 22nd June – although it is hard to believe it will survive that long if they are effectively giving 62 Avios for every 1p you spend.

You could also convert your vouchers to another partner – theoretically you could spend £90 on chillies and Goldsmiths would give you a £7,500 Rolex …..  However, remember that Tesco is now capping Clubcard points at 30,000 per quarter.  If you earn more than this, it is likely (not guaranteed, but it definitely happens) that you will lose all of the points above 30,000.

Do Tesco honor bonus points if items are substituted?

  • nick says:

I tried to buy the sweet potatoes in store last night because I needed some anyway. They have been pulled from sale. Presumably because people went nuts, again, and killed it.

    • elena says:

I bought some yesterday onlome and today I saw them in a store in leeds. I thinknit think it all depends on location as here I can’t find any chillies or okra that I needed.

    • thomas says:

As much as we all love this site and appreciate Raffles dedication and knowledge, i have often wondered if someone in head office or marketing at Tesco or similar reads this and gets made aware of these offers, perhaps faults, mass purchases etc ?

  • nick says:

I tried to buy 2 white flesh sweet potatoes in store last night because I needed some anyway. They have been pulled from sale- the self check out bloke took them off me.

I suppose there could be a good reason for this, but I suspect it’s because people went nuts and took the piss. In which case they are on to it and presumably people won’t get the points, like people who bought 99 small cabbages last time around.

    • Neil says:

I couldn’t stop chuckling on this comment about people buying 99 small cabbages. Hilarious! Bloody tools!

  • aceman says:

the cabbage people didnt get the points?

I have my finger hovering over 99 chillies, 99 okra, and 50 Eddeos right now!

    • nick says:

A colleague of mine didn’t, they just cancelled them from. the delivery. Others received (and were charged for) much bigger cabbages, which took the profit out of it. The latter is presumably less of a concern this time, but how much okra do people think Tesco has?! and as I say above (twice, due to my own incompetence), tesco have already done a product recall on the more expensive items.

  • LondonFoodie says:

Just ordered 99 okra, 99 chillies and a few edoes. Shows as 5,000 club card points – so fingers crossed. to be delivered 7am tomorrow.

In case you were wondering (off-topic?) here’s a quick recipe for the okras. Give them a quick wash snip the pointy tips and pat dry with a paper towel. (no need to cut them – it preserves all the goodness gooiness inside) Toss them in a pan with some olive oil for about 5-10 minutes until they become brighter green and a bit soft. Take out of pan, fry some onions until starting to become translucent, add okra and a tin of chopped tomatoes (or real tomatoes if you are less lazy). Add some salt and pepper and let cook for another 20-30 minutes, ideally covering the pan/pot. Easy and delicious! (Okra are a bit gooey inside, so is sort of an acquired taste.)

    • Oly says:

This is one of the reasons I love this website and its community, a recipe in the comments section of this amazing deal. Thanks! I will definitely try it out.

  • JY says:

    This is hilarious.

Ordered 99 Okra for a Saturday pick up in Bow.

Does anyone know what the requirements are for the pickup? Do I need to have the credit card/clubcard or ID to show them? Or can I send my brother who lives in Bow to pick it up?

    • LondonFoodie says:

My experience with pick-up of Tesco Direct orders was that they were happy with the order number, but it may be different from store to store.

  • aceman says:

ummm, so eddeos recipes would come in handy!

Clearly a total screw up, so wonder if it will be honored, imagine if the offer was available as online instore, you think the checkout girl will be counting each chilli to make sure you’re credited properly?

  • Kris Schimmel says:

Seems like the bonkers offers are just in south east. No stores in Scotland have them available & I checked few random ones in England, but no luck
