Holiday Inn Wembley is still just 10,000 IHG points per night

Back in February, I wrote an article on the fact that the Holiday Inn Wembley was available for just 10,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night.

This is astoundingly cheap. For comparison, most London Holiday Inn Express hotels are now 35,000 points. If you have an existing balance of 5,000 points, you can buy 10,000 points for just $70 (£42) via the ‘cash and points and cancel’ method (click and see under ‘Purchasing and Transferring Points’).

The reason that the hotel had been reduced to 10,000 points is that a huge refurbishment had been going on, with every guest room renovated.  My best guess is that the noise had been putting off paying guests so the hotel decided to try to pull in as many redemptions as possible.

It is now a good six months since the work at Holiday Inn Wembley finished – but the hotel remains at just 10,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night.  If you book now you can lock in that rate for up to 11 months in advance, with the flexibility to cancel your redemption if necessary.

I spent the night at the Holiday Inn Wembley after the Rotherham United vs Orient play-off match earlier this year!  Here is my bedroom and bathroom:

and

There is kettle, tea, coffee and milk in the room. There is a bath with a shower attached. ‘Proper’ toiletries (ie not in wall-mounted dispensers!).  I also received two free bottle of water and two small chocolates which may have been because of my IHG Rewards Club status.

It also has a small swimming pool, which includes a small childrens pool and a jacuzzi, although you can’t see them in my picture:

It is directly next door to the new London Designer Outlet. You may not have heard of this yet, but there are a LOT of High Street names, including M&S and Next, at discount prices. There is also a cinema and a large number of restaurants, so there is plenty of choice if you don’t want to eat in the hotel.

It is also directly next door to this, if you want to take a guided tour:

Transport to and from the hotel is clearly a key issue. The nearest tube is Wembley Park on the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines. It takes around 25 minutes to get to Bond Street station and about 12 minutes to walk from the hotel to the tube. You are therefore looking at about 40 minutes door-to-door to get into the West End.

Is this too far? It depends. You won’t want to be popping back to the hotel during the day. However, if you considering this as an option then your alternatives are probably also on the edge of London – and those hotels will be a lot more than 10,000 points and won’t have a designer outlet village on the doorstep.

There is also a National Rail option which removes most of the walking. Wembley Stadium station is literally 1 minute from the hotel, and takes you into London Marylebone in 13 minutes, for connections to the Bakerloo line (and for Madame Tussauds, which is very close!).

The official webpage for the Holiday Inn Wembley is here if you want to book or know more.

All in all, you really can’t go wrong for 10,000 points.  The best value alternative is probably the Holiday Inn Express Wimbledon South. This is 15,000 points per night. You need 50% more points for a less impressive hotel (HI Express rooms in the UK are pretty basic.) You would, however, get the free Holiday Inn Express breakfast included.

The hotel is also opposite a tube station (Colliers Wood) which would save you the 12 minute walk to / from Wembley Park station that I had. You can find out more about that hotel here.

All in all, though, Holiday Inn Wembley is a fantastic deal for anyone who is ‘points conscious’ but is looking for a modern hotel that is well connected to Central London.

Been taking advantage of this rate since November last year, I actually really like the hotel. Once you get over the brutalist exterior, the rooms are fantastic. I work in London but live out in Suffolk so I often book this when I’m out in London in the evening. Highly recommended.

  • Brian says:

Remember too that if you take the National Rail option for getting to Central London, you’ll be able to get 2 for 1 at various attractions with your rail tickets.

    • JQ says:

…though if you aren’t planning to use the 2 for 1, (and there are probably many ways to get cheaper tickets to the attractions anyway) you would be better off using Oyster instead of buying a paper ticket.

      • JQ says:

Or even contactless if you don’t want to get an Oyster.

      • Brian says:

True – unless you have lots of points from Redspottedhanky promotions to use. And I’m not aware of cheaper ways to get tickets to things like Kensington Palace or Hampton Court, at least not on a constant basis.

Holiday Inn Express at Hoylake on the Wirral is the same, it’s also relatively new (2 years max) with a decent restaurant next door by Marco Pierre White, great value at 10k points especially as it’s a short train or taxi journey to Liverpool and great for golfers playing Royal Liverpool and other links on the Wirral like Wallasey.

O/T – Raffles, are you a Miller or an O…? Or just there for a day out…

    • john says:

Got to be a Miller. The whole ethos of this website screams Yorkshire.

      • Rob says:

        🙂

It would be going a bit far to say I support them but I was brought up there and loads of people I knew were going to the game so I went too.

  • Tom says:

    Shhhhhh!

  • ChrisDev says:

Looks like availability is pushed out until the end of March 2015

  • Andy says:

Can anyone confirm the IHG points earning rate for InterContinental properties? I am looking to book the IC Budapest for 3 nights @ 410 euro which is 520 USD, however on the booking page it shows I will earn 3840 points? I thought it was 10 points per $1?

    Thanks for any help!

    • Head for Points says:

Definitely 10 per $, but you may find they strip out VAT and use a dodgy exchange rate.

If the rate was 3% off spot then you are at $500. 22% VAT would take you down towards $384 so 3840 points.

      • Andy says:

Thanks Raffles, must be due to the VAT.

I am thinking of purchasing Ambassador status – do you know whether it becomes active immediately? Or does it take some time to be processed?

        • Rob says:

Can’t remember, sorry. The pack takes a few weeks to arrive but I imagine it would show online within a few days.

If you’ve already booked you might need to email the hotel to tell them so get the upgrade prebooked.

  • Oliver Bennett says:

Agree this is a good one. A jewel In The crown for the ihg programme.

Walk to wembley park station is about 15mins, nice in the daylight to walk past wembley stadium and the outlet shopping place is good with restaurants. Perfect really for 10000 points
