Free TfL £5 and ‘£10 off £50 Esso’ now open to all Amex cardholders

Last week I wrote about the generous new American Express promotion from Transport for London.

It is offering £5 cashback when you spend £5 or more on tube, bus and rail tickets in London when you use your Amex as a contactless payment card.

Few people seemed to have received the offer on their online Amex accounts.

Howevee, it has now appeared on the American Express cardmember offers website which you can access here. This means that it is now open to everyone.

Amex Travel

Via that link, you can register any BA, SPG, Nectar, Costco, Gold, Platinum, Green or Centurion Amex you have, plus supplementary cards.  Don’t waste your time if your Amex cards are not contactless!

It is limited to the first 25,000 cards to register and you must spend your £5 by November 30th.  I am guessing that this is cumulative and that you do not need to spend £5 in the same day.

The decent Esso offer is also on the ‘cardmember offers’ site. This gives you £10 back when you spend £50 in one transaction.  It is limited to the first 25,000 cards to register and you must spend by November 24th.  You could top up a small petrol payment with a third party gift card if your garage sells them.

  1. I sent Amex an email about Malthurst not crediting and they manually applied the credit. I don’t think it will credit automatically.

  2. Premier inn deal….anyone know if you book an advance rate with premier inn and therefore pay for it straight away how they know when the booking was actually taken? as the deal expires on the 16th Dec?

    • Risk is that they do not charge you immediately – not sure how efficient PI is with this. Holiday Inn pre-paid nights are often not charged until a week before the stay depending on the hotel (others do charge immediately).

  3. Small shop is coming back as well, from Small Business Saturday on Dec 6th until Dec 21st.

    • Good Spot!

    • Thanks Simon, hadn’t seen this

      • Johnny5a says:

it’s very hit or miss whether you find out about AMEX offers. I get nothing in email despite opted in for all marketing junk

        • squills says:

You could possibly try to be more proactive lol 😉

So you expect the rest of the world to come to you?

Just look @ the offers online.

    • squills says:

Spend £10 or more and get £5 back*

      One of the best

From Small Business Saturday until 21 December 2014, you’ll get a £5 statement credit when you spend £10 or more in-store at participating small businesses*. Register your Card here from 10 November to take part.

  4. Has anyone tried if this offer works via a MBNA issued AMEX card?

    • In T&C it says MBNA cards are fine, and I was able to register mine. I have not yhet done the travel, however.

  5. pazza2000 says:

I’m not sure if this has been answered, but can you top up your Oystercard anywhere with contactless to be eligible for this statement credit?

  6. Amex are all over the place with this one.

1st person I spoke to – Esso gargages with Tesco shop excluded but Malthurst included.
    2nd – Both are excluded
    3rd – Both are included

Although he was careful with this wording the third person pretty much guaranteed a manual credit if any issues.

    • squills says:

I’ve had several manual credits, all they do is look up the transaction then apply the credit.

Leaky system it would appear but don’t worry about your £10 😉

    • grex9101 says:

The whole “MALTHURST” thing is a pile of crap. My local Esso – which isn’t on the exclusion list – has a “Hurst’s” shop attached to it. Obvious now, but I didn’t think (or have reason to think) that this is a MALTHURST garage (indeed, the BP down the road also has a Hurst’s, so that’s clear as mud…).
Poorly thought-out offer, and now I have to chase them for a bloody tenner. AAARGH.

  7. I made the assumption, after reading how the billing would work, that the TFL contactless payment would be per charge, not per journey.

To be on the safe side, I split my journey by exiting the tube within zone 1 and immediately going back through the gates again. Total journeys for the day thereby come to more than £5, but less than the original with the statement credit if I hadn’t split.

What’s not so clear to me is if weekend journeys are charged at the end of each day, or at the end of the weekend? Would save me splitting my journeys if so.

    • PS. Must say, using the Amex card was a hassle – usually had to swipe 4 or 5 times before the barrier recognised it! (I had nothing else in my hand for it to clash with).

  8. Outsharked says:

Happy to report £10 credit received from a transaction at my local Esso-with-a-Tesco-Express. (Paid at a Tesco till and transaction came up on my statement as ‘Tesco Stores 3359’)

So that’s success with my Gold… will see what happens with my Barclaycard-issued AmEx, which I’ve also registered for the promotion, next time I fill up…

  9. I have a Lloyds Amex, and my transaction tracked as MALTHURST so seems no automatic credit, but Lloyds bank wont help at all with this, anyone have a email address or phone number that would help me, I don’t have a ‘proper amex’ so cant just secure mail them.

  10. I cannot find any Esso’s that sell gift cards of any kind. It looks like it’s not one of their lines.

    • My local Esso without a Tesco shop sells a wide variety of gift cards.

The Esso with a Tesco shop sells some giftcards. I have bought Tesco giftcards though as they are easy to spend.

  11. Is your shop quite a big one? Here in Cumbria they are all small and I’ve rang around 5 who all have none for sale.

Any in the Glasgow or Edinburgh area that you can recommend?

    • OT, 5£ discount for small shops are out on the cards as of today

      • grex9101 says:

Nice reminder. £5 off a Montecristo at my local cigar shop always makes it taste sweeter.

        • grex9101 says:

Anyone else having mega problems getting the map to work? It gives “near me” results, but then blanks when I try to get back after clicking an icon. Works ok on mobile. Weird.

      • For clarity this does not start until 6 December which is why I haven’t covered it yet!
