Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Final IHG Rewards Club hotel ‘flash sale’ now live for 48 hours – rooms from £29

IHG – owner of Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc – has brought back the 48-hour Flash Sale that it originally ran earlier in November. Booking is now open.

Over 600 hotels in Europe are taking part.  The end date is the same as last time – you must complete your stay by February 14th.

The list of participating hotels is priced from £29 to £169.  It went up on the site yesterday, even though you couldn’t actually book, and seems identical to the list from the first two flash sales.

The UK £29 list comprises only Holiday Inn Express hotels. The first semi-decent London hotel I know personally is Holiday Inn Kensington Forum at £49 – this is a pretty good deal as, whilst in need of refurbishment, it is outside Gloucester Road tube station (Piccadilly, Circle, District) and 5 minutes walk from the South Kensington museums.

Holiday Inn London Bloomsbury and Holiday Inn London Regents Park, both £49 last time, also have decent reputations but I have never been inside either. At this price you can’t really go wrong.

On the other hand the Holiday Inn Stratford I used to get for £20 in the sale is £89 – close to its normal price in the dead season. The Holiday Inn Wembley is not worth £89 given that it is only 10,000 IHG points to redeem.

If you want a luxury break, the £169 level looks interesting.  The InterContinental London Park Lane is still there as is InterContinental Paris Le Grand – a Valentine break may be possible.

The sale runs until midnight on Saturday 17th so you have just a few hours to book.

These rooms are not explicitly blocked from earning IHG Rewards Club points and stay credit, or counting for Set Your Sights. If your night costs less than 70% of the Best Flexible Rate for that night, your points are at risk though. This is the threshold that hotels are meant to use when deciding whether to give points although some properties ignore it.

Note that you must be an IHG Rewards Club member to book.  You can sign up for free online so this will not be a major problem for anyone!

As always, if the sale has a property in a place you need to be, you’ve got a bargain. I recommend you click here, take a look and decide for yourself.

Is availability of these sale nights limitted? Have tried finding a £39 room in Inverness and a £49 room in London in all three sales without success using the app. Bezt rates I can see are saver rates

    • Jamie P says:

Same issue with me. Even when the sale went live at midnight I was struggling to get the rates down from the Saver Rate to the promotional price mentioned.

    • Chris says:

Monday 9th February is £29 in Inverness, I booked that a few minutes ago. Availability up there will be very low even at this time of year as occupancy levels at that property are very, very high.

When I was up there at the end of the year I was chatting with Cathy the GM and she said they were probably going to hit 95% for the year which will give you an idea. They were also full everything night from the Middle of May right through until the first week in September. I was surprised it was even included in the promotion to start with tbh.

  • mark2 says:

I just tried and no problem.
Just log into the web site (on a computer) and click on ‘offers’.
Personally, I would never attempt to do anything important on a phone (probably an age thing).

    • sandgrounder says:

Not even if bonus points depended upon it? You are missing out! Join the revolution!

      • mark2 says:

My target just says log on using the app (not book). I can borrow back the iPhone that I gave away to do that.

  • Nathan says:

So will the £29 rooms qualify for the set your sights? As that could be very rewarding if yes

  • Yanky says:

” If your night costs less than 70% of the Best Flexible Rate for that night, your points are at risk though”. Did anyone try this for Into the Nights? I would like to book 3 £29 rooms to trigger my 50,000 IHG points for Set Your Sights, but they are about 50% of the Best Flexible Rate. Not sure I want to risk it.

    • jason says:

i booked 4 rooms all qualified for intothenights

    • Chris says:

Yeah all of mine counted for ITN, some of them were heavily discounted £89 AP versus £29 flash

      • Rob says:

Excellent – lets hope my three nights from this week post, the discount is on a similar scale.

        • Twobfair says:

          Did your nights post yet?

          • Rob says:

No, should be overnight (5 days)

          • Twobfair says:

Let us know if they do. No points have come through for me for any of the non stay targets such as redeeming reward points for any item from their store. Hope they track!

    • Stuart says:

I was up when the sale started, booked two nights at £29 which is which was about 45% the BFR and it says I will get points so I’m sure it will count for ITN.

  • Andy says:

Can anyone talk me through how to access the flash sale rates. I’ve joined the IHG rewards Club but when I go on to the site there is no FLASH sale?

    • mark2 says:

click on ‘Offers’ > Hotel Offers then select 48hr Sale

      • Rob says:

Or just use the link in the article. It is kept off the main page of the website because it cannibalises bookings from people who were willing to pay the full rate.

  • Rob says:

Correct. New members do get a nice easy one!

    • Dwadda says:

      Awesome.

      1) Just to be certain, do Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express count as two different brands?

      2) Can I check-out without being at the hotel? A) by simply not being there, B) by using their app, C) by calling the hotel …. in order of preference.

      Thanks

      • Rob says:

        1. Yes

        2. You don’t even need to check-out. Just leave the key in the room. If you want to be polite, ring and say that you were running rate and just left but that the key is in the room.

        • Scott says:

I must admit once or twice I’ve checked in, went to the room just to open the door and acquire any pens / notepads and cleared off home with the card. No problems as of yet.
Can’t wait for the HIX in my town to be completed later this year. Going to make mattress runs even easier.

  • Tony says:

Nice one. I had a room booked in Manchester in Feb at £120. Got that cancelled and replaced same night, same hotel for £49. Thanks Raffles!

  • Will says:

slightly OT. but a few IHG questions.

    1. does anyone know when 2014 status will be “downgraded” and is a soft landing e.g. plat to gold? I havent qualified for 2015 status but still have it today.

    2. Do the latest IHG credit card offers qualify for the set the sights “get the credit card” offer?

    thanks

    • Rob says:

      1. Can’t remember, been Platinum for so long …! Don’t think there is a formal soft landing arrangement.
      2. Yes. It might not track immediately because you haven’t used the ‘Set Your Sights’ link (I assume that goes to the lower bonus offer?) but I assume using that link is not part of the terms and conditions.

    • Tony says:

I’m pretty sure your status stays with you until the end of the following calendar year.

      • Will says:

so if upgraded (by match) in late January 2014 i will keep until December 2015? email when upgraded suggests if I don’t re-qualify by 31/12/14 then I wont be plat anymore. however I still am today!

    • Henk says:

I didn’t re-qualify in 2014 either (although I was close), but I’m still showing as Plat as well.
