Good redemptions on Etihad partners – 36,000 miles return Europe to New York in Business

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

On July 8th, Etihad Guest devalues its reward chart sharply – by over 50% in some cases.  This came as a major shock to members when it was announced last month.

You can read details of the devaluation and comments from HFP readers here.

What is NOT changing, allegedly, is the cost of redemptions with Etihad partner airlines.  The online Q&A regarding the devaluation states:

“No. The changes to earning rates only affect Etihad Airways’ marketed flights. The changes to GuestSeats, OpenSeats and Upgrades affect Etihad Airways’ marketed and operated flights.”

You should that with a pinch of salt, especially as a new redemption chart for Jet Airways, Etihad’s Indian partner, was released this week with no notice whatsoever.

Etihad Guest offers some fantastic redemption deals via its airline partners

If you don’t want to, or can no longer afford to, redeem on Etihad itself, there are some great opportunities elsewhere.  It is impossible to highlight them all but I have picked out one from each partner airline.

All partner redemptions must be booked by telephone

Availability cannot be checked online.  If an airline is offering a reward seats in its own programme to its own members (ie if American Airlines has a saver level reward seat available for its own members when you look at aa.com) there is a decent chance that Etihad can book it for you.

The full list of earning and spending airline partners with Etihad Guest miles is here.

Here are some highlights (to see details, click the link above and then select the relevant airline)

Air Serbia – found under the ‘Preferred Airline Partners’ tab, 13,429 miles for a one-way in Business Class from London to Belgrade

Air Seychelles – found under the ‘Preferred Airline Partners’ tab, 125,672 miles for a return Business Class flight from Paris (they do not fly to London)

airberlin – 49,000 miles one-way Berlin to New York in Business Class

Air New Zealand – seems pricey, eg 273,000 miles one-way London to Auckland in Business Class

Alitalia – 12,000 miles return in Economy and 24,000 return in Business from the UK to Italy.  You can also book Alitalia partner airlines with miles, interestingly.

American Airlines – confusing chart but looks like 50,000 miles one-way in Business and 62,500 one-way in First from the UK to North America.  These would not incur fuel surcharges unlike identical AA redemptions made using Avios points.

ANA – 15,000 to 23,000 miles return for domestic redemptions in Japan

Asiana – 138,000 miles return from London to Seoul in Business Class

Bangkok Airways – economy redemptions look poor value but 20,000 miles for domestic flights, return, in Business Class is a better deal

Brussels Airways – the jackpot!  36,620 miles for a return Business Class flight from Brussels to New York (seat pictured below)

Brussels Airlines business class seat

Czech Airlines – more crazy figures – 13,900 miles for a one-way flight in Business Class from Prague to Abu Dhabi, or 25,610 miles one-way in Business Class from Prague to Seoul

Etihad Regional – based in Geneva, nothing costs more than 6,343 miles one-way in Economy and 8,991 miles one-way in Business

FlyBe – it looks as if Etihad can book any revenue ticket that is for sale.  The rates are poor but flexibility could be fantastic if this were correct.

Garuda Indonesia – 7,000 miles one-way for Business Class between Gatwick and Amsterdam, as I reviewed recently (and you get a flat bed seat!)

GOL / Varig – Latin American airlines, pricing looks reasonable given mileage covered

Hainan Airlines – a Chinese airline, pricing looks reasonable especially for First Class

Jet Airways – not sure what domestic Indian flights cost for cash but Business Class redemptions appear good value compared to economy

Korean Air – there is no information on redemption rates on the website although there are some terms and conditions!

Malaysia Airlines – London to Kuala Lumpur on an A380 would be 190,000 miles return in Business Class

Oman Air – 44,000 miles one-way from Muscat to London in Business Class looks interesting.  First Class is expensive at 80,000 miles one-way.

Philippine Airlines – expensive at 124,000 miles one-way in Business Class from London

Royal Air Maroc – similar to BA at 20,000 miles one-way in Business Class from London to Marrakech

South African Airways – pricier than BA at 80,000 miles one-way in Business Class from London to Johannesburg

SriLankan Airlines – 76,000 miles one-way in Business Class from London to Colombo

Ukranian International Airlines – 25,000 miles for a one-way First Class flight from London to Kiev looks interesting

Virgin Australia – from 13,000 miles for a one-way domestic Business Class flight

As you can see, there are some very interesting prices in the chart above.  If you have some Etihad Guest miles to burn – and you can still get 25,000 miles by taking out their FREE credit card – you should spend some time looking at your options.  Those miles may be more flexible than you thought.

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards (April 2025)

Etihad Guest does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Etihad Guest miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards.

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Etihad Guest miles which is an attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Etihad Guest mile.

The American Express Preferred Rewards Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it, not just with Etihad but with any airline.

  • Douglas says:

Their call center is very unhelpful… I spent half an hour to check availability on alitalia, but they couldn’t help as there were no seat for any dates for the next 365 days!
I just went to miles pay and redeemed that prepaid visa on Amazon gift cards…. Btw those cards are considered Swiss, so you can’t pay in bills

    • James67 says:

Douglas, is that a better deal than redeeming for amazon giftcards directly? Thanks.

    • Rob says:

      I paid HMRC with PointsPay

      • James67 says:

Between this, the BMI MC … I think you mudt actually enjoy paying your tax Rob 🙂 Certainly I doubt anyone is getting a much better return than you

        • Rob says:

It was just an experiment before I wrote the article on PointsPay, was only a few £!

  • Roger says:

    Hi raffles

Still got to spend my 35000 (now almost 45000) miles from American Airlines card from 2013.

Any best value redemption in this summer school holidays you/readers can suggest?

    • James67 says:

My recommendation would be to top it up to 60k if you can and redeem for J return to India or middle East. You already have enough for Y. If you book 2x ow you could start exEurope for lower taxes, using cash save for overnight in Amsterdam for example. Rates quoted are for one person. If you plan redeeming them for a couple you destination options limitted to Europe mostly, or to 2x ow tickets on the India or middle east routes. Tat you mention school holidays suggest you may have family in mind, i which case 45k miles not near enough to be useful sadly.

    • Charlie says:

I recommend HKG to LHR (in that direction) on Cathay, for 52.5K AA miles, business class. Taxes come to about 10 or 20 quid. You need to call AA to redeem this, but can use BA to check for availablity. I’ve done this twice!

You could do it LHR to HKG, but the Taxes are a lot more.

      • reds says:

Or fly from Dublin. My tax was £14 to Kuala Lumpur plus 60000 AA miles.

  • James67 says:

Anybody know if I can redeem miles from EG family account for somebody who is not included in family list? Thanks.

  • Evan says:

    Re: Oman Air

Anyone who has ever flown Business with them knows what a great product this is! Muscat is also my favorite city in the middle east, so worth trying for these.

    • Jason says:

What’s the availability like on Oman air? How many seats do they release in F and J per flight?

  • mark says:

Correct me if i am wrong, but you can to Hawaii with American Airlines very cheaply… that’s what i am saving my miles for

    • James67 says:

Correct, same rates as continental. Hiwever, Hawaii is not the exotic paradise most people envision, there are much more exciting travel destunations in USA and you will spend at least 14hrs less in the air/airport. Don’t save too long, it’s idds on there will be a huge AA devaluation sometime soon.

    • Brendan says:

Maybe not. It appears that Etihad charge per segment so you would need seperate awards to LAX/DFW and the on to Hawaii

      • James67 says:

Sorry Mark, Brendan is correct. I had just been reading Rogers comment and when I read yours I was still thinking if AA miles, not EG miles. Will be loads more miles with EG

  • Gabbai says:

The whole Etihad partner reward scheme is a big mess and I suspect bluff. For example in the airBerlin chart Business Class redemption amounts are given but then in the small print below is says “The Business Class redemption rates will be twice the value of the economy redemption rates.” None of those printed are double. First Class redemption rates are shown but airBerlin doesn’t have First Class.

Some of these values seem truly outstanding in terms of the number of miles but UIA also doesn’t have a First Class so the offer of 25,000 in First Class from London to Kiev simply isn’t real. The BA Club Europe service on that route is very good. UIA Business is not and many of their planes are old.

What is very good value on UIA is Kiev-Tel Aviv at 14,000 miles return. UIA themselves charge 20,000. It is also interesting that the Gulf airline appears to allow redemptions to Israel on UIA, Brussels Airlines and Czech, whereas the word “Israel” is conspicuously absent from the Etihad AA and Alitalia award charts despite the fact that they both fly there.

The airBerlin redemption Berlin to New York is higher than the cost in AVIOS which is 40,000 [with no surcharges].

The BRU-NYC Business Class deal is outstanding if you can find space available; like Douglas I have found the Etihad call center slow and unhelpful. It is great having these bargains in charts but like the airBerlin and UIA First Class, I suspect many if not most of them simply do not exist.

I haven’t trawled through all the partner award charts but I suspect many of them are full of holes. If Etihad had online award booking it would be easy to check and also to see what the fees and surcharges are. Also bear in mind that you need to book two weeks in advance; no last minute deals here.

    • high end hobo says:

correction: post BA devaluation TXL-NYC is 60k avios, not 40

  • Mrs_fussy says:

Where can I find the 36620 reward on Brussels airways ? Just looking at the miles & more website and it says 55k from Brussels to NYC
    Can someone help !

    • David says:

We are talking about spending Etihad miles from their loyalty scheme, on flights operated by Brussels airlines.

Stop looking at Miles and More, it has nothing to do with what is being discussed., totally different schemes, with totally different currencies.

This would be spending Etihad miles, spend from Etihads scheme.

  • Elena-MuslimTravelGirl says:

Like the previous comments, I spend good few days looking at where to redeem my Etihad points. I looking at all airlines and the Brussels option to NYC seemed like a bargain. However I couldn’t find anything available and the staff are so slow and unhelpful that is unbelievable. Not very proactive. I looked at Oman air and the taxes charged were expensive as well.

I ended up redeeming my points for a one way from Zurich to Abu Dhabi in business. which seemed like a good option considering low taxes. With the devaluation all flights from Abu Dhabi and some European cities seemed fully booked in business and first until November or later. Seemed odd.
