British Airways Executive Club has announced the first “open to all” transfer bonus from Tesco Clubcard to Avios since, I think, July 2012.

From 1st November – so DO NOT CONVERT TODAY – until 30th November, you will receive a 20% transfer bonus on conversions from Tesco Clubcard into British Airways Executive Club.

Auto-convert members are OK as transfers which were made after 20th October will also receive the bonus.

Tesco Clubcard

There is a cap of £100 on the amount of Tesco vouchers that can be transferred.  You cannot get around this by sending £100 to BA and £100 to avios.com, because avios.com is not participating in this offer.

Full details can be found on the Clubcard website here.

Note that the wording between the site and the rules is not exactly the same.  The site says that you must convert in multiples of £10 to get the bonus.  The small print simply says that you must convert a minimum of £10 – and that once you are above that, you get the bonus on whatever amount you send over up to £100.

This bonus is not entirely unexpected.  I know that the Avios devaluation has impacted the willingness of some people to collect Avios from third parties.  This is purely common sense – if you believe that an Avios point is worth less than it was, other Clubcard redemption options or credit cards begin to look more attractive.

Avios, on the other hand, relies on income from third party issuers of Avios points.  The points issued from British Airways flights are a cost whilst the points issued via third parties are a revenue stream.

The only way to overcome this impact is to offer a transfer bonus which lessens the devaluation.  Where BA has gone wrong here is in capping the transfer at £100 – it was Club World redemption pricing which took the biggest hit, and only being able to transfer £100 of vouchers (28,800 Avios) is not going to make much impact.

Remember that Virgin Atlantic is also offering a 15% conversion bonus.  This is the first time in a long, long time that Virgin has had a poorer offer than BA!

The other thing to bear in mind is that Clubcard Boost returns on Monday, allowing you to get double the face value of your vouchers at Tesco Direct or for certain products in-store.  You should consider if this is a better deal or not.  Avios probably win out – a £10 Clubcard voucher would be worth £20 in Tesco Direct or 2,880 Avios points so you are effectively ‘buying’ Avios at 0.69p which is a good deal.

Better late than never…. right? Patience is a virtue after all it seems! Useful return if using them a lot for RFS or UuA.

    • James67 says:

RFS yes, UuA less so but still helps. Remember UuA took biggest hit of all in devaluation. Btw, anybody else having problems with UuA online? I’ve been getting error messages for 3 or 4 days already. Pity about the cap, otherwise this conversion could habe reduced the effective CW devaluation to atound 5% on BA metal offpeak (what was that Rob said about avios becoming too complex!) For those with large clubcard balances.

      • Daniel says:

It’s a pretty common with UuA. If you can’t get it to work online just give them a call.

        • James67 says:

Thanks Daniel didn’r know that, first time its been an issue for me personally.

  • GlennM says:

Excellent news, but a shame it is limited to £100. I guess £100 to Avios, and the rest to Virgin for me. Interested to hear any reports from the wild of whether the cap is enforced or if they allow some to slip through.

  • Frenske says:

When using Avios to get cash redemption of ticket prices, one would still get £19.20 for £10 value in clubpoints. Still a lot worse than Eurotunnel redemption.

    • harry says:

Money + Avios tickets can on occasion offer better value than that, I achieved 1.6p on 4 European tickets in September. I was the very first person to book them, though – 1am in the morning on T-355, not sure if there is a learning point in there.

  • flibbly says:

I’m torn. I have plenty of Avios at the moment and was planning on taking advantage of the 15% Virgin bonus as I currently only have <100K Virgin miles (plus they can be turned into hotel points in an emergency).

With the death of 3V I'll never get a massive number of clubcard points again in the future, and I try to do all my (work) paid travel on oneworld so have a regular income that way. I think I'll stick to Virgin, sacrilegious as that might be when an Avios bonus finally appears.

  • Globetrotter7 says:

Yes, yes, yes! I know where all my Clubcard vouchers are being spent on this quarter!

  • Tracy says:

I get the 800 Avios legacy rate per £2.50 of Tesco vouchers but I can’t remember whether this is for transfers to BAEC or Avios. Can someone remind me please? Thanks.

    • avidsaver says:

I found in the distant past that I got my 800 rate (per £2.50) when converting to either BA Exec or Avios.com. I’ll probably do a test £10 transfer to BA and see what happens. Fingers crossed we’ll get the 800 + 160 per £2.50.

      • Tracy says:

Good idea. I did check my Avios/BAEC statement before posting but they didn’t go back that far. As you say, hopefully we’ll get 800 + 20%. Fingers crossed.

    • Stu R says:

I do too (bracing myself for that to change any time!) – it’s on Avios I’m afraid. I somehow dropped out of auto-conversion at some point so I manually convert and I’m loathe to do anything that might ‘break’ the legacy. 600 + 20% is 720 so no bonus for us, sadly. I guess we just have to be happy with our legacy bonus!

  • James67 says:

Might be worth waiting a week or so before converting, Virgin might improve their offer to match or beat BA.. However, cinsidering that Virgin redemptions cost both less money and miles than BAs then 15% is already a better deal.

    • Brian says:

Not forgetting that Virgin will actually have redemption availability in all classes, unlike BA (assuming you’re looking for long-haul)!

  • David says:

I auto convert, have I missed out? Can’t tell yet from the balance. It seems so 🙁

    • Worzel says:

Exchange your Tesco Clubcard points automatically? You’ll still receive 2,880 Avios for every 1000 points exchanged.

    • Liz says:

The t&c’s say auto converters are included from 20th Oct so you are ok

      • Worzel says:

        t&c’s also show:
        1. Promotion available to email recipient only, please do not forward this email, emails are only sent to Eligible Participants. Eligible participants are British Airways Executive Club Members who are aged 18 or over. The Promoter reserves the right to verify the eligibility of Eligible Participants. Eligible Participants confirm that they accept the terms and conditions set out below.

        ??.

    • ECR says:

I auto convert and there was definitely no bonus included. I hope they send another batch of avios to my BAEC account for the bonus amount.

      • Kerry says:

My clubcard points are also converted automatically and I only got the standard 600 per 250 points. I spoke to Tesco Clubcard this morning and evidently the bonus Avios are only credited to the account after 30th November when the promotion ends … so I shall be checking early December to make sure the bonus is applied! They could make it clearer on the promotion details that this is how it works (and the person I spoke to on the ‘phone had to go and check because she didn’t know either!)

      • Rich says:

Yep definitely no bonus on auto convert
