The British Airways Winter Sale, for flights from the UK, is currently underway.  This is valid in all classes for departures from the UK, for bookings until 2nd February.

I wrote about some of the British Airways sale deals available in this article and they are still bookable for a few weeks.

At the same time, I highlighted some amazing Club World fares to North America which had been loaded out of Dublin.

British Airways 350 2

These were originally only valid for travel over the key Easter and Summer holiday periods:

Book by 2nd February 2016

Fly outbound between 19th March and 18th April 2016

or

Fly outbound between 1st July and 31st August 2016

These fares have now been extended and can be booked over Christmas 2016 as well.

As of today, you can book for returns up to 30th December.  Return dates in January will open up over the next few days as BA lets you book 355 days in advance.

Here are some of the typical prices for next December, flying out on Christmas Eve and flying back on December 29th:

Dublin to New York – €902 (£678)

Dublin to Miami – €940 (£706)

Dublin to San Francisco – €1,110 (£834)

Dublin to Chicago – €1,014 (£762)

Other destinations in North America are also available.  There are some exceptions – I couldn’t find any deals to Orlando for example.

If these prices look interesting I suggest clicking through to ba.com and having a look around.

Remember that you MUST take the first flight from Dublin.  You cannot hop on the plane at Heathrow and skip the first leg – your flight will have been cancelled by then!  You should also try to take the final flight back to Dublin, especially if you have checked baggage.  British Airways is clamping down on allowing passengers to ticket their bags through to London if their flight is ticketed to Dublin.

If your plans for Christmas 2016 are still flexible – and I imagine they are – this is a good time to start thinking about getting away very cheaply.

Hi All, sorry for going OT but I was hoping for some thoughts on the return leg on two companion vouchers I need to book soon. It’s open jaw and we’re travelling with two children under 12.

As it’s an open jaw I know I have to book the tickets over the phone but I’m worried they’re going to go before the call centre opens. Two questions: a) Do people think I’ll be able to book the tickets online and then call in to get them added to the companion voucher? If so will they refund the avios I’m saving on the call? b) when I booked the outbound I couldn’t book online for under 12s. Can I book online pretending they’re over 12 and then when I call in change their age?

Having seen the great value Dublin flights I may reconsider booking them but thanks in advance for your thoughts.

  • Jas Gill says:

Just booked CDG – SIN in J with Qatar for next Xmas for less than £1000 per person. Very pleased with the fare and short connections in Doha. Looking forward to the bar on the A380.

  • Krys_k says:

Any chance that these deals will be available if you turn right rather than left i.e. South East Asia

    • Rob says:

£600ish to Bangkok currently available, see HFP tomorrow

    • Gavin says:

Would love to know any deals for Seoul.

      • sav says:

Not seeing anything for £600 unless it’s via GotoGate, but i dont know how reliable a website they are. Can’t see anything around that price on Google flights.

        • Rob says:

Yes, gotogate has it. Qatar is very unlikely to have negotiated an exclusive deal with such a site so they are either taking a hit for marketing purposes (unlikely on such an odd fare) or their IT is playing up and you are being accidentally undercharged. Perhaps they are selling you IT fares?

          • AndyR says:

            What are IT fares?

Also do you know if different cancellation rules apply when booking via an OTA or does the airline set them?

          • Rob says:

‘Inclusive Tour’ – heavily discounted flights which can only be sold if packaged with a hotel or car.

          • John says:

Can you still get BA tier points when booking QR via gotogate?

          • Leo says:

With regards to points/tier points I always thought whether you got them depended on the fare bucket – I’ve avoided gotogate and ebookers in the past because I couldn’t tell the fare from their websites – expedia does let you see the “fair bucket”. I think IT fares means Inclusive Tour fare and that these are problematic for points. I’m sure someone will point out if this is wrong….

          • Rob says:

gotogate is booking this into ‘I’ I have just found out which is OK for tier points and Avios on BA.

All BA fares including IT earn AFAIK. This is NOT the case with some other airlines.

          • John says:

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking.

          • Rob says:

They are booking into ‘I’ so Yes.

          • Leo says:

Any tips on how we can find out the fare on Gotogate Rob or is that secret knowledge?

          • Rob says:

Er, search?! I brought them up earlier tonight.

          • JamesW says:

I’ve risked gotogate and booked some of these flights at £593 to BKK.
Qatar are running a (targetted ???) tripple QMiles offer at the moment for bookings made before 17 Jan for travel all year basically. However the Ts&Cs say that flights must be booked directly on the Qatar website to get this benefit.
I didn’t do any number crunching (stupid boy) to see if the extra miles I’d earn as a QR platinum status holder would be worth the difference in prices between gotogate and the Qatar website.

Fingers crossed they don’t get cancelled.

          • harry says:

I used to love my 3 weeks on Koh Tao at Xmas when I was young, free & single. Big diver in the past plus the food was wonderful. Paid for various UK girlfriends to join me 🙂

          • Sav says:

            Cheapest prices I can see are ex-Oslo, e.g. 7-14 Sep 2016, Osl-Bkk £579 (!!!!) with gotogate or £780 with Expedia/QR website. Mix of 787, A380 & 777.

My issue is how safe booking this with gotogate actually is. Will definitely do it on a credit card. Looks like they don’t take Amex though.

Please let us know if anyone is able to ticket these with them.

I’ve noticed recently that gotogate and some others ( eg Travelpack) seem to undercut the other big TAs and airline websites by a fair margin when you do a search on Kayak, Skyscanner etc. Never had the guts to go through them though.

          • James Ward says:

I bought one of my ex-DUB trips from GoToGate last week. Ticketed just fine (next day I think) on AF ticket stock into points earning booking class. Like others, I was slightly apprehensive as I’d never heard of them before and only found them via a skyscanner search. However, now it’s ticketed, I assume my contract is with the airline and I don’t expect AF to go out of business before my trip.

      • Polly says:

Gavin, go on line and play around with ex EU departure points. Presume QR fly that way…some great prices out there…

  • Leo says:

But when? I can’t see anything decent for BBK.

    • Gblb1030 says:

Seeing lots in Sept/October, all from OSL.

    • Clive says:

Leo I just did a couple of dummy booking and find Ex Eu (AMS and OSL) to BKK for around £750. Rob points out other lower options may be available.

      • James says:

Slightly off topic so apologies but has anyone got any experience with booking a flight on a credit card, hitting a minimum spend, pocketing the points (transferring elsewhere) then cancelling the flight for a refund? No doubt this would annoy a card issuer but these situations must sometimes occur and be genuine?

        • roberto says:

Your points should effectively be “overdrawn” and future purchases on the card would reduce the negative balance of your points until such time future transactions balanced out.

Or you could just never use the card again or cancel it I guess…

        • Rob says:

You can do it once, unlikely you’d be allowed to do it twice. With only 3 major card issuers in the UK for travel cards, being blacklisted by one of them would be short sighted in my view ….

  • Alexis Karfopoulos says:

They were always valid for late November and Christmas/New Year 2016. There were in fact two separate sale fare filed when this sale began. One fare covered Easter & Summer 2016, and the other covered this period. Also the later fare was around £100 cheaper or more for all destinations.

This was all noted and reported on the TP run thread on the BAEC board on FT at the time.

  • Adrian says:

    re:QR Sale
Just looking at OSL to BKK £781 return in Business on good metal (787 and A380) with great connections…..i’m not sure I can say NO!

    • JamesW says:

gotogate has them for under £600 but Qatar is doing a tripple miles offer at the moment which you won’t get if you book via them. Depends how many miles it is as to whether it’d be better to get it nearly £200 cheaper or pay the QR website price and get the miles (and the security that you booked direct with QR !!).

  • james says:

Any reason why couldn’t fly over to Dublin and come back on the next flight if we had no luggage, check in on line etc… Thinking of taking the last flight out of Dublin and the the first flight out of LHR to JFK..anyone tried it?

    Cheers

    • Polly says:

Yes we have done it, as BA says on the flight note, that overnight stay is not their responsibility! So quite handy if you live near LHR and don’t want to hotel it in dub. Multi city booking of course…. Then your last leg from either LCY or LGW if you don’t want to go to dub. This time we will visit family, so will go to dub couple of days before our flight to JFK. But we will do the last leg to dub this time, and then RFS or Ryan air it back home later. Don’t mind hanging around in the lounge for a few hours…

  • harry says:

    O/T printers
A 500 point printer, glitching @ 1000 points, when returned later because no logic keeping/ offloading, results in just official 500 points deducted.
    x a few = a few x 500 points in the bank 🙂
