Since I have had numerous emails asking about this recently, I thought this was worth an extra article.

A full analysis will follow tomorrow.

Virgin Atlantic has launched its semi-regular Reward Seat Sale.

Economy and Premium Economy routes are reduced by 30%.

New York, for example, is just 24500 miles return instead of 35000.

Virgin Atlantic

No discount on taxes or Upper Class, however.

You can book as far in advance as you want.

At the time of writing there is no branding on the website but the fares are already reduced.  Pop over to the Virgin website and take a look.

Remember that transfers of American Express Membership Rewards points to Virgin are INSTANTANEOUS as long as the accounts are already linked.  You will also get a 20% bonus on Tesco Clubcard conversions at the moment as I explained here.

  1. Do they often do Upper Class sales? If so maybe I should diversify into Virgin, not just BA. Thinking of going to St. Lucia with my wife and with sales like this it would be worth it and ignoring the BA 241.

    • No, they don’t. Taxes are also the same as BA – Virgin taxes are usually a lower than BA for economy routes.

    • Remember that availability is generally MUCH better on Virgin than on BA, so that alone is a reason to diversify somewhat.

  2. Was looking into whether it would be possible to dodge the APD by flying from Belfast but “Flying Club miles cannot be used for this route”. It does look like it’s only a single once-a-week route from Belfast to Orlando for a month in the summer (and quite popular) so presumably no need to fill extra seats.

  3. Thanks for the heads up. I thought they were going to skip the “Jan” sale, and only looked up yesterday that the following opportunity last year was around May… Is the end date known yet?

  4. I was just about to book economy flights to grenada for May in cash so this works out nicely.

Question – the cash fares allow extended stopovers for free – will these redemptions offer similar and if so how do I book the extended stopovers?

  5. Also a bonus on buying miles, 30%.

  6. I booked a reward flight on Friday. So this is pretty frustrating.

Does anyone know if they’re fairly amenable to letting me rebook and take advantage of the sale?

    • As long as there are seats you can rebook and just pay the change fee. If there are no seats you would be taking a big gamble because you’d have to release yours before you could rebook and there’s no guarantee they’d go back into the reward bucket.

    • Same here, I have just pinged an email to;
      [email protected]

Ive stated my similar situation and asked nicely for 30% miles credit, let’s hope they recognise its the flexibility in Customer Service that retains loyalty…

  7. Any idea how long this is going to be active for? I need to hit the Amex gold signup bonus, which should happen in the next 2 or 3 weeks.

Also how soon do the bonus points appear in my membership rewards account when I’ve spent the £2000

    • The points will show 24 hours after the charge that takes you over £2,000 shows on your statement.

The 30% ‘buy miles’ bonus ends on 9th March so it is possible that the sale will end at the same time. We should have the full rules within 24 hours anyway.

    • Reward sale ends 24th Feb.

  8. Has anyone had the Virgin miles from their Tesco vouchers yet? basic and bonus
