Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Get 50% off IHG hotels across UK and Europe for Summer weekends

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

IHG Rewards Club, the Holiday Inn / Crowne Plaza / InterContinental etc chain, has launched a special Summer sale in conjunction with Avis.

On the face of it, it is a very strong offer.

You will receive a 50% discount on the Best Available Rate when you stay TWO or more weekend nights (Fri / Sat / Sun) before 7th September.

You can ONLY book this deal via this link here.

It is not available via the standard IHG booking site.

There is only one catch to consider.  In general, stays which are discounted by more than 30% from the Best Available Rate do NOT earn IHG Rewards Club points or stay credit.

This is especially relevant here because of the generous ‘Accelerate’ promotion currently being run by IHG.  ‘Accelerate’ is the most generous hotel promotion this Summer if your personal target was a soft one.

It might make more sense NOT to book this 50% discount rate and instead book at a standard rate instead.  You will pay a little more but you can be sure that your stay will earn points and, more importantly, will count towards your ‘Accelerate’ target.

The link to book your ‘50% off’ stay is here.  The deadline to book is 30th June.

The most generous summer promo for most travellers has by distance Accor (regardless individual ihg accelerate targets)…I am leisure traveller (about 50 hotel nights a year) and I can’t find any value at all booking ihg property anywhere in the world…50% off just slash the price to around local average price for comparable property, but as this stays don’t earn ihg points, I am still better off going elsewhere.

Hi Rob, how this compares to accelerate is perhaps a little more complex than you imply but I agree with your general conclusion. It seemed that for most accelerate was worth around 55k points fot X challenges which were much more difficult for some than others. For those like you who will most likely only use IC, CP or Indigo then accelerate, however difficult, will only generate one free night stay. Thus, this offer would seem better than accelerate. However, for those who want to build IHG status, want to bank points for pointsbreaks , wish to make midweek stays, focus on lower cost redemptions that offer potentially high value such as HI Wembley then accelerate remains better.

Are there blackout dates for this promo? Looking at Carlton Cannes from 19-21 August and it’s showing the same price via this link as the normal site.

    • M says:

      Doesn’t seem to be live?

    • Fenn says:

Not working for rotterdam HIE either

    • Raffles says:

There is a list of participating hotels online. Very unlikely the Carlton in August would sign up.

It is live though, I saw rates last night. 2 night min weekend stay remember.

      • JP says:

There must be blackout dates because the Intercontinental Cannes is listed as a participating hotel. I get that rates are always subject to availability but surely it’s better to say ‘blackout dates apply’ rather than subject to availability as BAR is nearly always available unless the hotel is full!

  • Frances says:

Frankly speaking we better book on HFP website, we get double points and we will accelerate our Accelerate promotion…

  • Ed says:

Any chance this is stackable with the ambassador free night?

bit OT but appreciate any help if poss, myself and partner have 25k and 40k of virgin miles in respective accounts and want to pool together and convert to IHG for a Park lane stay, any easy way to do it (as currently in separate virgin accounts…?)
Thanks in advance, any help appreciated
(p.s. I have already transferred my 25k into my IHG account) and her 40k sits in her virgin account (she has no IHG yet…)

    • Rob says:

      No, sorry

Unless you have the same surname, in which case you could test whether they just match by last name or both names …..

      • Alan Pinchard says:

Thanks Rob, not even the same name so cant test it, oh well thats a bugger as dont have an IHG card any more so not really accumulating any, can I do something else with unwanted virgin (avois?)

  • Alan Pinchard says:

Actually just seen your post on this, not to worry I will put into separate IHGs and work to build up, thank you

    • Shyla says:

I could be missing something here but doesn’t Virgin allow you transfer to other accounts for £15 per transfer.

  • David Birkbeck says:

I can’t make this work. If I go through Avis link I get exactly same price as via IHG site. So Barcelona Indigo is 187€ for a Thursdat to Sunday stay in July. It says Your Rate Available but it’s not a discount… Tried with 5 others, same story and even for Newcastle which most definitely had no blackout for weekends in July

    • Rob says:

Was working yesterday. Perhaps you need to book only Fri to Sun dates.
