  Wow – this is when I love this game! Had 9500 points hanging around, managed to hit the dying hours of the 50% bonus to top up for $13.50. Got two nights at the Intercontinental Phnom Penh in Oct, worth about 300 quid which will make a nice weekend break from Singapore.

    Just done the same – trip from Singapore to Phnom Penh for September. 10000 points for 2 nights at an IC – can’t be bad.

        Recently paid £150 a person for tourist Visa for China. What a rip. Still not as bad as the close to £400 business visa a few years ago for Nigeria.

        You can also get an e-visa, which is a little more expensive ($37), but doesn’t need a physical passport photo so might save some time if you have to go get some taken – and also one less queue to wait in at the airport.

        If less than 15 days no visa required. Don’t take the word of some of those visa check websites that will sell you a tourist visa, required if staying more than 15 days.

          Anyway, just done the same – 3 nights at IC Phnom Penh in late September. Looks like they might have a lot of HFP readers there around Sept/Oct lol.

  What a nice picture of the Holidat Inn Paris Porte de Clichy you find, Rob inside the press book photo of IHG I guess, ;-))

  I was not surprised to find it inside the list of hotels in France.

  I hope the hotel is sound protected from the outside noise.

  You are at the very limit of Paris. The next building is in the city of Clichy-la-Garenne (no worrires, it is not Clichy sous bois).
  It is in front of the IBIS hotel and more importantly 10 meters from the périphrique. So you can see from your window the constant flow of cars running on the ring during the all 24 hours.

  The area is in a very big level of works currently happening (the area is in a big expansion plan): – the refusrbishment of one small office block in front of the hotel,
  – the construction of the new court of justice of Paris: a tall buiding of 50 floors (100 meters of the hotel),
  – the construction of the extension of tramway line 3;
  – the construction of the extension of the automatic line 14,
  – and the extensioon of the Parc Martin Luther King garden.

  You need to walk 500 meters or more to get to the metro station Porte de Clichy on line 13 betwee the dust due to all the works happening and the constant diversions required.

  I am always amazed to see all those tourists lost to find the direction fo the hotel although when you see the logo above the périphérique, you are probably happy to find it..

  And of course lots of groups seems to stay there…. if you see the numerous autobuses parked in front of the hotel.

  Once all of that said, 5000 is maybe a bargain if inside the hotel the room are fine (which I have no idea).

  I believe some visitor choose it because of the reward availability and probably the low rate.

  But be aware you have to walk quite a bit to get there.
  And it is not in a central position, so the name of Porte de Clichy (or Gate of Clichy).
  It is close anyway to the L’Oréal headquarters (which are in Clichy la Garenne).

  I will anyway rather like to pay a little bit more to be in a more pleasant and central area.

  But for the ones ready for that, this is a bargain.

  Note that bus lines 74 (to go to Hôtel de ville) or 54 (this one to go to Gare du Nord directly without any change) are in front of the hotel and run frequently.
  Change for both 74 & 54 at Ganeron stop to get the bus line 81 to go to opéra.

  I hope this helps your audience, Rob, to make their choice accurately.

      They are. After Nice, I rebooked my just finished stay at the InterCon literally every day as the rate kept dropping €10 every 24 hours – and this was despite it being the final day of the Tour de France as well.

      Well I think a lot of people are put off visiting France in general due to recent incidents, I certainly won’t be visiting for pleasure anytime soon.

      I do agree with Rob, it is still a good deal.

      It is not the most romantic area. Rob says feedback are good inside the hotel,so a good deal then.
      Taking the buses to go to the hotel is the most confortable option because the stops are in front of the hotel.

      If you take the metro, it is maybe nicer to stop at MAIRIE DE CLICHY (one stop after the Porte de Clichy) on line 13.
      You have a direct escalator to go out from the platform level (at the back coming from Paris) to the street level with no stairs at all.
      It is nicer to walk back then from here. It is almost the same distance than from porte de clichy.
      You arrive at the casino supermarket level, keep walking straight in the direction of paris (in front of you from the escalator exit), you see the L’Oréal headquarters on your left and you are there.

  Do Point Break stays count towards Accelerator targets?

  I’m 1 night short to trigger the 12K for stays and a weekend short to trigger the 12K for weekend stays, hitting both these also then triggers my 17.4K achievement bonus. So that’s 41K points for spending 10K on a weekend I would probably otherwise not do for cash.

  I managed to grab a points break for our one night stop over in Louisville, Kentucky next month – now need to cancel my Hotels.com free night booking and use it somewhere else! Fun and games!

    The equivalent cash for my pts break booking was $235 (£181) – cancelled my other hotel.com free night booking and got my £96.45 free credit deducted from an existing 2 night booking for next year – already used another free night credit and one night cash for this booking – she deducted the £96.45 credit from that booking – so 2 nights in a lovely 4 star Inn in Santa Fe for £57.28 all in including breakfast! Love this game! It doesn’t normally work for me but his time it did!

  Booked the Holiday Inn in Abu Dhabi before I went to bed last night in case availability had gone by this morning. Have now looked at cash prices (<£60 p/n) and Tripadvisor (5th in AD but overwhelmingly from first time posters) and am wondering if I did the right thing. Has anyone stayed there?

    Hotel is almost certainly fine. If you are happy with not being on the beach I doubt you can go far wrong.

    £20 a night for a fairly new hotel in fairly central Paris? Can’t knock that. The St Petersburg place looks good as well if you visit the site and it is an outstanding city.

        Metro station outside the door – its all you need.

        If you are waiting for Indigo Opera or something to come up you’ll be waiting a long time. 15 years ago my ‘go to’ Paris hotel was Holiday Inn La Villette which was brand new at the time and, literally, had a metro station outside the door. Within 10 minutes of walking out of the door you were in the centre of the city.

          It’s outside the Peripherique! And the metro is a walk away, not outside the door. If all you need from your Paris hotel is a place to sleep, you can probably get a budget place in a similar area for not much more than the value of your points. I suspect most HFP readers have higher expectations and would be willing to pay a bit more to be somewhere that is really ‘fairly central’ and where you can actually go for a walk near the hotel. Wandering around is, after all, part of Paris’s charm.

          Think back to when you were 19, poor and travelling around Brian – you would have jumped on this. I once slept on a mattress on the floor of a room above a strip club in Paris – pretty sure it cost more than the £20 value of 5k points even 25 years ago.

          Book it and send any teenage kids you have!

          Flyertalk review says 100m to the Metro. To quote from someone at the full points price: ‘Not a bad choice if you need to be in that area, or want to save on points and only need a decent place to sleep in Paris.’

  Also I stayed at the InterCon Mendoza back in February – cash rates at the time were around the £50/night mark. Really not worthy of the InterCon badge – the rooms were decent sized but the hotel was generally lacking and a bit worn with one of the poorest breakfasts I’ve ever had in a hotel. I’m not saying this is a terrible hotel – it is just nowhere near the usual InterCon standards. I think if IHG had done an audit of this property they’d have had a field day. Also you have to drive/get a cab into Mendoza.

    Oi what do you mean?! My family is from Grimsby, and I will be using this to make a trip to visit them.
    And the HIX is is the centre, unlike the Travelodge stuck in an industrial park miles from anywhere!
    BTW, for any visitors, the Fishing Heritage centre is very interesting.

    As a teenager worked on site at the Ciba-Geigy plant for 7 weeks back in 1976 and saved the £370 required as a deposit for our first house . Stayed in digs for £3.25 a night B&B in the next street to Cleethorpes Railway Station, HIX would have been luxury compared to this place.
