News in brief:

Latest British Airways cost-cutting move announced

I ran the latest list of British Airways service cuts for August recently.  This followed on from the long list of service cuts that were imposed in July.

The first service cut for September has now been revealed.

From 1st September, newspapers will no longer be offered at the gate on short-haul flights returning to London.

They will continue to be available for outbound flights.

New Etihad 10% discount code

Etihad has launched a new 10% discount, SPORTUK.

This is valid on bookings made before 21st August for travel between 1st September and 31st May.  There are black out periods around Christmas and Thanksgiving.

It is valid for London, Manchester and Edinburgh departures in Economy and Business.

It only discounts the base fare, not the taxes, which means that the actual discount will be under 10%.  Flex tickets are not included in the offer.

The Etihad website is here.   You can click here to read my reviews of Etihad A380 First Apartment, A380 Business Studio and Boeing 777 First Class.

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards (April 2024)

Etihad Guest does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Etihad Guest miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards.

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Etihad Guest miles which is an attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Etihad Guest mile. The Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it.

Allegedly BA are sponsoring a new Olympic Games event this year, “Race To The Bottom”.

From Dub the etihad discount is 20%

  • Cheshire Pete says:

Newspapers , Really. Desperate times. So, I presume short haul Manchester to London is included in this……….

    • Rob says:

Might not be, because they can source those locally and not need to fly them up (which costs due to weight).

  • Frankie says:

The CW starter has gone. I’m off to Newark in a couple of weeks on the annual 2 for 1 and can order my meal online now, but only the main. Previously I could also order my smoked salmon starter from the other starter choices.

    • Nick Haley says:

I travelled CW to LAX back in June and was only able to preselect a main back then but starter choices were offered on board.

    • Alex W says:

I travelled CW last week and I quite liked the starter. But then again I would never choose salmon if I had the choice.

    • Simmo says:

It’s started did LHR-BKK 3 days ago and was presented with the Avocado* Mozzarella and Tomato salad

*Mine was missing the Avocado !!!

Month after month more cuts, and the product is visibly and physically getting worse when you travel, both in lounges and in the air. It wouldn’t seem so bad if they made some attempt to make ‘improvements’, but absolute silence on that. Surely they need to give us a carrot, or explain the cuts, or reduce prices. BA needs a competitor as clearly they are seeing no drop in passenger numbers with each cut, and I can almost hear the gleeful eureka as they come up with the next idea. Ok maybe a small overreaction for a removal of a paper, but I always assumed that was a marketing tie-in anyway, and my comment is more in anticipation of the next cut which, let’s face it, is probably already lined up for release….

    • Callum says:

They have plenty of competition. What you are looking for is a different public who shares your quality concerns.

      • Genghis says:

Completely disagree. BA is the only “go to” carrier for direct flights from London to many destinations.

Also in my co’s individual case, we have to boycott Virgin as Branson “really annoyed” our Chairman a few years ago

  • Gin and Tonic Please says:

OT: I see last year’s rubbish Apple offer (1000 bonus MR points on £500 spend) is back on my Amex Plat.

    • Johnnycl says:

Esso spend £50 get £5 back is also showing on my PRG. Sure this was £10 back last year!

      • Brian says:

I think it was £5 last year, too. The good thing is that it’s valid every time until the offer expires, not just once.

      • Peter K says:

It was £5 off of £50 last year if it was the reoccurring offer. Some had a one-off £10 of a £45 purchase.

      • mark2 says:

Isn’t this the one where you can go to an Esso/Tesco petrol station and buy a Tesco gift card and get the cash back?

    • Arun T says:

Less rubbish when you combine with Avios.com 7 Avios per £1 offer on Apple.com spend.

  • Concerto says:

Yes, and you’re all stuck, aren’t you? Now BA has been allowed to become the monopoly it always wanted to be, you don’t have a huge amount of choice if flying from the UK. So even if they cut it down to easyJet levels a large majority will still have to fly BA to get where they need to be. I watched this happen from the takeover of Dan Air right up to bmi. That final cherry on the cake is Virgin Atlantic, so let’s be glad that Delta has a finger in that pie. And I’ve long had a theory that BA has a major finger in the easyJet pie.

I can live without the Daily Mail.
