Has the Starwood to Marriott conversion ratio been leaked?

I thought I’d drop this in during the afternoon as something to think about ….

This morning a Mandarin-speaking reader, who I know fairly well via previous emails, sent me a document which has been doing the rounds on Chinese frequent flyer sites today.

It appears to be an internal briefing document of some sort relating to the Starwood Preferred Guest transition details.  It is in Mandarin so I haven’t posted it.

The key takeaway of this document is that allegedly the conversion ratio from Starwood Preferred Guest points to Marriott Rewards points will be 1:3.

SPG Starwood

If correct, this is fair.  Not hugely generous, but fair.  After all my own valuations, which I mention on here occasionally, are 0.5p per Marriott Rewards points and 1.5p per Starwood Preferred Guest point.

If confirmed, it could have been a lot worse.  Marriott clearly isn’t out to stiff SPG members from Day 1.

The other takeaway is that status matching will be available, perhaps immediately, from Starwood to the equivalent Marriott level.  Starwood Gold would get you Marriott Gold which means lounge access and (in the lounge) breakfast.

This makes American Express Platinum (my reviewvery interesting for Marriott stayers.   That card comes with free Starwood Gold status which would match to Marriott Rewards Gold.  It also comes with a bonus of 30,000 American Express Membership Rewards points which would turn, via SPG, into 45,000 Marriott Rewards points.

The Starwood Preferred Guest American Express (my review) would be worth 30,000 Marriott Rewards points as a sign-up bonus (ie 10,000 SPG).

This is only speculation of course and I may be proved totally wrong tomorrow.  Let’s see.

Now I can live with that. Obviously need to see the finer details but as you say Rob “at least we ain’t being screwed”.

  • Two Clues that Marriott May Convert Starpoints at a 3-to-1 Ratio - Travel Codex says:

[…] there is a rumor shared by Head for Points that Starpoints will convert to Marriott Rewards points at a ratio of 3:1. His rumor is difficult […]

What does this mean to someone who don’t see not own Amex SPG.?

    Is that gonna be canned.?

    Should I get one?

    • Rob says:

May well be canned late next year. Marriott is a Visa partner.

      • Jordan D says:

Which is great – except it has been months since you could last get a UK Marriott card … which hasn’t been great for my heavy Marriott stays this year!

  • Fenny says:

Any idea when this would happen? I am currently SPG Gold via now cancelled Amex Plat. I also have a handful of points that I think will expire at the end of the year. I can live without the points, but Marriott Gold would be worthwhile.

  • Jimmyjimmy says:

Do we think the Starwood points conversion to Marriot will reset the Marriot points expiry date?

    Very interesting indeed!

3:1 seems about right as you say, but to be honest I was definitely fearing something worse. For those of us with decent Starpoint balances, it might be a good time to start swatting up on Marriott’s flight+hotel packages.

I wonder if it will be possible to move Points in both directions?

Status match seems obvious – though Marriott Gold is worth considerably more than SPG Gold , so that would be great.

I was sort of expecting Marriott to make a mess of this, but if the rumours turn out true then I’ll actually be quite impressed.

    OT:

Deeply unimpressed with Accor this evening. Received an offer in my inbox of 25% off a UK weekend break until end of January.

Perfect I thought, I’m heading to London on the weekend of the 9th-11th Decembet. I’ll book the Pullman, double it up with the current AMEX offer of £50 off a £300 spend qnd everyones a winner.

And when it comes to paying, Accor won’t accept AMEX for that reservation.

I’m 200 poibts short of Accor Plat and am deeply tempted to take my business elsewhere in future.

Clearly they are wise to the offer on AMEX and have decided to prevent a bit of doibling up.

I will take my £300+ hotel spend elsewhere that weekend.

    • harry says:

I don’t suppose they take PayPal by any chance?

      • 3CT says:

        Nope.

To get the £50 discount the transaction would need to register as with Accor on AMEX too.

        Very frustrating for my part.

Can’t quite understand Accor’s attitude as it is p**sing a loyal customer off by not alllowing me to use a payment method they usually accept.

    • Roger says:

Yes, I had to use my Visa card too.
There is no way to use Amex AFAIK.

    • Alex says:

Trying calling their reservation line, for a typically Accor unknown reasons sometimes the website doesn’t accept Amex but I’ve paid using it over the phone more than once

    • Brian says:

But you might just as well wait for Happy Mondays anyway and still be quids in.
