IHG Rewards Club, the Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc loyalty scheme, has launched a website for its Spring 2017 promotion – IHG Accelerate Yes, it is repeating the Autumn 2015, Spring and Summer and Autumn 2016 offer!

But that is not a bad thing.

To be honest, during 2016 IHG has been the only major hotel chain offering global promotions which offer genuine value.  Everyone has their own personal target but, for most of us, the challenge is pretty straightforward.

Here are the headline details:

IHG Accelerate (Version 5) covers stays from 1st January to 15th April

All hotels are participating

Your bonus is personalised – you need to log in here to discover yours

The 1st January start date means that IHG has excluded the Christmas period from both the current and next Accelerate ofers.  This is a shame as hotels are traditionally very cheap between Christmas and New Year and it was possible to pick up some ‘mattress run’ nights to hit your target very cheaply.

This was my target for 56,600 points maximum, comprising:

  • 1,000 points for a stay in January
  • 5,000 points on my next stay
  • 10,000 points for staying five nights
  • 5,300 points for booking four stays via the IHG app
  • 16,800 points for staying in IHG hotels in two different countries outside the UK
  • 2,500 points for booking on my corporate rate (of the company I haven’t worked for since 2011)
  • 1,000 points for making any redemption
  • 15,000 points for completing five of the six targets above, excluding the January bonus

This is not a terrible selection of offers.  The corporate rate is tricky because not that many IHG properties offer a special rate to my ex-employer.  However, I already have a four night stay at InterContinental Hong Kong booked in which will help me on my way.  Let’s see.

My wife got an easier one for 41,000 points:

  • 3,000 points on her next stay
  • 1,000 points for a stay in January
  • 10,000 points for staying five nights
  • 2,000 points for applying for an IHG Rewards Club credit card
  • 3,600 points for booking a Bonus Points Package
  • 21,400 points for completing three of the four targets above excluding the January bonus

This is exceptionally easy.  All she has to do is make ONE stay, for one night, on a Bonus Points Package rate!  As long as she also applies for the free IHG credit card, that will be 30,000 points banked.

Note that if you have a target which involves meeting a certain ‘food and beverage’ spending target, this is EXCLUDING VAT for UK stays.  IHG also uses a weak exchange rate when converting your spend to US$.  If you were asked to acheive $39 of cumulative spend (£31), you actually need to spend £37 due to the 20% VAT and in reality probably need to do £40 due to the FX rate IHG uses.

Conclusion

As long as your target is sensible, this is highly likely to be the most generous hotel promotion you are likely to see this Spring.

Log in to the Accelerate website here and see what your target is!

  • Genghis says:

Mine’s actually decent this time. It might encourage me to actually stay there on some Q1 work stays.

  • Relaxo says:

Got a weird one- Spend $39 on food or beverages at IHG hotels and earn 900 bonus points.
Cant tell from their terms whether this can be cumulative or charged to room over 1 stay.
Im on the fence with this seasons offer ….Far fewer points for the 1stay+Jan Bonus than previous yrs which is what Ive gone for…but could get the achievemt bonus and a total of 33500 with 2 stays. If the food & bevy spend bonus is cumulative then I might be up for this one

    • flibbly says:

I haven’t got an F&B one this time, but I’ve triggered them with cumulative spend previously.

      • Ed says:

Rob I know you’ve covered this previously but it’s probably worth including a note on the main article for f&b spend targets. Tax being excluded, possible unhelpful exchange rates etc

    • HayMow says:

The food & drink ones have always been cumulative for us – ie. across all stays in offer period.

    • Lady London says:

The food and beverage cost far exceeds the value of the points for it. I only did it once when I really needed it to make my 5 out of 6 to get the whole bonus points.

My last offer was impossible for me to achieve plus the 6000 miles offer from Lufthansa Miles & More made me book my first Hilton stay in a while instead.

  • Waribai says:

Yes, I appreciated the 2015 accelerate. We’ve got 4 free nights coming up at IC Koh Samui!
My question now is as long as I register for IHG accelerate 2017 will that cover me for any pre-exisiting bookings? I’ve got a good offer and I’ve already booked fo IC Davos next February. I can’t cancel and rebook because there is no availability on the dates I need anymore.

  • Luke says:

My accelerate offer made me laughing – I would need to stay 19!!!! nights to get max. 36 200 bonus points….absolutely useless – I can’t be bothered at all…

  • flibbly says:

I’ve a weekend already booked in February where I’m planning to use my Ambassador free weekend night cert. What are the chances of this counting as a weekend stay for the purposes of this promotion do you reckon?

I’m assuming bookings (both cash and reward) that I’ve already made for stays during the period will count OK.

    I have :
5,000 – Book and stay once
    16,000 – Stay 8 nights
1,300 – Book 2 nights via the app
    4,000 – Stay a weekend
11,200 – 2 nights in different foreign countries
    1,000 – Make a redemption
2,000 – Get IHG credit card
    12,000 – Complete 6 of 7
    1,000 – Stay in Jan

    • Philip says:

Don’t believe Reward Nights count. See the General Terms at the foot of your Accelerate offer,
“Bonus points are not issued for Non-Qualifying Room Rates or Non-Qualifying Stays. “Non-Qualifying Room Rates” or “Non-Qualifying Stay” include the following: any stay at a Kimpton Hotel, net wholesale individual and group rate, certain package rates, employee discount rate, friends and family rate, crew rate, special discounted contract rates, seasonal worker/crew rate, 50% travel club discount rate, travel industry discount rate, distressed passenger rate, IHG® Rewards Club Reward Nights/Airline Hotel Reward rate…”

      • Genghis says:

Are you sure the AMB night is a ‘reward night’? I’m at IC SIN at Easter and said they’d offer AMB benefits for the AMB certificate nights but not for reward nights

      • Alex W says:

Someone must know the answer to this. I would hope that AMB weekend counts for at least 1 night as you are paying for 1 of the 2 nights (at over the odds as well).

If it doesnt count, not sure I will bother renewing ambassador. I am struggling to use the weekend certificate without organising a trip just for the sake of it.

        • Rob says:

Weekend certificate stay counts for 1 night. If it posts as zero, complain and they fix. If it posts as 2 nights, you got lucky.

        • Lady London says:

Adding something to your room bill for the night in question might just possibly make a difference.

  • bobby says:

I get 54k for 27 stays, which with current plans is doable so its going to be a decent bonus for me!
thanks for the heads up Rob!

  • Chris says:

Mine is doable but if it is to be done it will be from February onwards and totally dependant on what Hilton do as tbh I’m finding I can get around 10k HH one a one night stay of around £50 with their current promos and that’s before the Hilton consistency is factored into it with breakfast/lounge etc.

    • bobby says:

Hi Chris, how are you managing the 10k per stay? just interested to see if its better for me over the next 3 weeks….

      • TGLoyalty says:

Book via the App and get 3x base points
Pay for any part of your stay with Visa credit card and get 5000 bonus points

Plus depending on status even more. £60 Inc F&B stay recently netted me c9k points

You need to register. Don’t think it’s been covered on HFP so see the hilton thread on flyertalk

        • Chris says:

Yep pretty much spot on. I’m also getting an additional 50% base at the moment as well from a promo email that was sent to me back in October.

        • bobby says:

brilliant thanks, yeah im hilton diamond so should be decent. thanks

  • Timothy Firmager says:

I’ve definitely got the worst accelerate bonus of them all (maybe because the points from the previous 4 promotions were so easy to collect):
1,000 points – Book in january
    1,000 points – book & stay once
    8,400 points – stay 5 nights
    3,000 points – stay a further 3 nights (8 in total)
    3,000 points – stay a further 3 nights (11 in total)
    3,000 points – stay a further 3 nights (14 in total)
    3,000 points – stay a further 3 nights (17 in total)
    15,000 points – stay a further 3 nights (20 in total)

    • Peter K says:

Almost the worst. Mine is the same but without the extra 8400 for 5 nights of stays
