Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Open forum …. any suggestions for tweaking the site?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

It is exactly two years since I last ran an ‘open forum’ where I opened up the comments to ideas on tweaking the site.  It worked well so I thought I would try it again.

Without a huge team behind me, any changes to Head for Points will always be ‘evolution not revolution’.  That said, because there are now two of us there is more flexibility.  Some of the benefits of that in recent months have been:

Logo without text PNG

the Christmas party, which could never have been done without a second pair of hands (the fact that I’d never done it before is proof of that)

the introduction of video to our reviews and the launch of a YouTube channel

increased review coverage, both of hotels and via press events such as the recent Cathay lounge launch

letting Anika write 95% of Shopper Points, freeing up more of my time for HfP

On the short list for improvements is:

an improved mobile site

the introduction of a Q&A page where readers can post questions which other readers can answer (this will NOT be a forum, it will be a specific Q&A page)

the reintroduction of a luxury hotel booking service (coming in January)

However, I am fully aware that there is an element of ‘snow blindness’ in what we do. After all, we look at the site every day for a considerable period of time, and we can only second-guess how you, the readers, respond to the different elements.

As we start a new year, I’d like to open up the floor to any suggestions you have about the site. Remember that I need to cater for two audiences at the same time – the regular readers and the thousands of people who come here via Google each day and who I want to convert into regular readers.

Is it clear to a newcomer what the site is about and why they should keep on reading it?

Are there too many menus at the top of the page? Too few?

Are there too many ads? (Probably not, most sites would run ads inside posts as well, which I don’t)

Are the sidebars too confusing? Should I push the social media links more?

Should there be more ‘sticky’ information for newcomers?

Does the mix of content – which veers from Tesco deals to airline deals to credit card sign-up offers – work for you?

Is the mix of news versus ‘reference / background’ articles (eg ‘How to use Combine My Avios with Iberia’) right?

Does the current format of running a fixed number of stories at fixed times every day – with a ‘lead’ story and two less important ones below – work for you? (Most sites just post at random times throughout the day, but I am middle-aged and grew up with the newspaper tradition!)

If there is anything about the way the site currently looks that annoys or confuses you, or if you have any ideas for improvements, please post below. You can also email me at rob [at] headforpoints.com if you’d prefer.

Anything from your dislike of how I punctuate the headlines through to ideas for new ‘sticky’ pages are welcome – no idea is too small.  And, to be honest, small changes are easier to implement than large changes ….

Thank you, and a Happy New Year for 2017.

    Happy New Year everyone.

You mention an improved mobile site. It would be good for this to mention recent comments and for some lines on a many replies comment to not be a few characters wide. I use desktop view on mobile for these reasons.

  • Mikeact says:

I would welcome the ability to be able to edit my posts on occasion.

And a big Happy New Year to one and all.

  • Clive says:

I think some destination-based pages would be useful – gathering links to all articles/advice/tips (airlines/hotels/airport/other tips) about going to a specific area or city (e.g. Dubai, New York, Australia) in one place. This would work for places where HFP + readers have experience, but would be useful esp for new visitors planning a specific trip and the who don’t remember all of the past advice we all half-remember.

Happy New Year to you all!

Great to see the site going from strength to strength.

I agree with other comments that it would be nice to have broader coverage of other frequent flyer schemes and more on options for those outside of London (although appreciate from what Rob has said before that the email subscriber base is probably 80-90% London vs the comments!)

The 3 articles a day format has worked well, worth aiming for one Bits per day to help give a natural home for OT stuff. I think a simple FAQ page managed by Rob/Anika would be very helpful – lots of comments (eg BAPP downgrade and what happens to voucher, which airlines can 241 be used on, etc!) come up multiple times a week and folk could be directed there.

With regards comments in general I find it invaluable receiving emails for every comment – it’s a shame this option has gone for new folk using the site and some way of tracking a thread you’ve contributed to would make sense – please just ensure there’s an ‘all comments’ option too! Does the Disqus system perhaps offer this??

    • Rob says:

Disqus is appalling – you can see how slow it loads on other sites. It also forces people to be logged in to comment.

I am thinking of hiring someone for a part-time temporary gig to write a big BA ‘how to’ – probably 100 separate articles each answering one question, eg “How do I achieve BA Silver status?”.

      • Alan says:

Fair enough if slow loading. Being logged in wouldn’t be a major issue though, I’d imagine it might help cut spam a bit too. Not sure what other commenting options are around but a shame this one doesn’t do email alerts (for those that aren’t lucky enough to receive updates).

Not sure about 100 more BA articles though, given how they seem to be getting worse and worse as every month passes! Would it instead be worth paying someone to cover items that you couldn’t easily cover yourself? (such as other alliances or non-London options??)

        • Trevor says:

Alan, you imply that you do get email updates? How is this possible – this function ended ages ago and I’ve been here almost since the beginning. Of course without alerts you may never see this response and no doubt I won’t see any response you give 🙁

          • Alan says:

I’ve been here since day 1 and signed up to site wide updates. Sadly no longer an option but still available for those that originally enabled it – TBH I wouldn’t contribute nearly as much if I didn’t have them!

    • Liz says:

Just read your comments Alan and posted the same on the previous page!

      • Alan says:

        Haha 🙂

Hope you had a good Hogmanay, Liz – I saw the STV show came from the Unicorn, great for Dundee!

        • Liz says:

Yes we had it on in the background – missed the usual Edinburgh show though. Happy New Year! Thanks for all your helpful advice! Sitting here researching flights to Oz and internal Oz flights for 2018 ! Always forward planning! 🙂

          • Alan says:

Excellent, enjoy! Remember to just call BA if any issues with QantasLink or JetConnect by Qantas bookings 🙂

  • AndyD says:

I totaly agree with flyforfun’s comment:
It’s totally pointless reading a thread that has been hijacked by completely off topic subjects. I find it very frustrating – having to scroll down the page to find comments relevant to thread. OT are moslty unrelated queries that are mostly related to them. This appears to happen to every thread on this site. Is there some way of OT comments be removed? I would llike to suggest a Q&A thread/board for these type of OT queries.
Other than that – great site!

  • Steve says:

    I like:-
Having three items in my inbox by 6AM each morning – please keep this method.

    I dislike:-
Wading through lots of off-topic discussion to get to the real responses. I know you don’t want a forum, but a better discussion area without hijacking topics would be great.

I agree with many other comments that coverage of other airlines points earning opportunities will be good as it appears that we will need to diverisfy away from BA at some point.

  • David S says:

I think the format so far works well.
The idea of a Q&A area is good since it will take the OT questions out a topic thread which will be great, as suggested by others.
Maybe a HfP party outside of London for us non-Londoners

  • james says:

How about limiting the daily number of contributions from individuals.
There are some people that “hijack” the site, with an excessive number of posts every day.
Are these people Real – or trolls?

    • Rob says:

In a very low key way I do ‘manage’ comments. It is a balancing act though – for eg, if allows people to discuss stuff that pops up during the day which I won’t cover until the next morning. I also pick up a lot of ideas for future posts from these discussions.

    • Leo says:

      Ha! Plus 1 definitely!
