Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Open forum …. any suggestions for tweaking the site?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

It is exactly two years since I last ran an ‘open forum’ where I opened up the comments to ideas on tweaking the site.  It worked well so I thought I would try it again.

Without a huge team behind me, any changes to Head for Points will always be ‘evolution not revolution’.  That said, because there are now two of us there is more flexibility.  Some of the benefits of that in recent months have been:

Logo without text PNG

the Christmas party, which could never have been done without a second pair of hands (the fact that I’d never done it before is proof of that)

the introduction of video to our reviews and the launch of a YouTube channel

increased review coverage, both of hotels and via press events such as the recent Cathay lounge launch

letting Anika write 95% of Shopper Points, freeing up more of my time for HfP

On the short list for improvements is:

an improved mobile site

the introduction of a Q&A page where readers can post questions which other readers can answer (this will NOT be a forum, it will be a specific Q&A page)

the reintroduction of a luxury hotel booking service (coming in January)

However, I am fully aware that there is an element of ‘snow blindness’ in what we do. After all, we look at the site every day for a considerable period of time, and we can only second-guess how you, the readers, respond to the different elements.

As we start a new year, I’d like to open up the floor to any suggestions you have about the site. Remember that I need to cater for two audiences at the same time – the regular readers and the thousands of people who come here via Google each day and who I want to convert into regular readers.

Is it clear to a newcomer what the site is about and why they should keep on reading it?

Are there too many menus at the top of the page? Too few?

Are there too many ads? (Probably not, most sites would run ads inside posts as well, which I don’t)

Are the sidebars too confusing? Should I push the social media links more?

Should there be more ‘sticky’ information for newcomers?

Does the mix of content – which veers from Tesco deals to airline deals to credit card sign-up offers – work for you?

Is the mix of news versus ‘reference / background’ articles (eg ‘How to use Combine My Avios with Iberia’) right?

Does the current format of running a fixed number of stories at fixed times every day – with a ‘lead’ story and two less important ones below – work for you? (Most sites just post at random times throughout the day, but I am middle-aged and grew up with the newspaper tradition!)

If there is anything about the way the site currently looks that annoys or confuses you, or if you have any ideas for improvements, please post below. You can also email me at rob [at] headforpoints.com if you’d prefer.

Anything from your dislike of how I punctuate the headlines through to ideas for new ‘sticky’ pages are welcome – no idea is too small.  And, to be honest, small changes are easier to implement than large changes ….

Thank you, and a Happy New Year for 2017.

    1. Top links should be more hierarchical … basically should be just (1) Hotels Promos and sub menu to major hotel chains and (2) similar to airline (3) similar to credit card + maybe link to kinds of hot offers/promos , who needs all that quick avios and favourites ( to whom ? )

    2. Forum should be able to be viewed as flat page ( either always or optional ) ( see dpreview forum as example ) and in general as good way to mix blog with forum

    3. Articles would be good to have different colour scheme in header or have some label to clearly categorise, say everything about hotels blue , airline red , credit cards green and general articles can be as they are

    4. Too narrow site – especially with side bar – should scale better for higher resolution screens

    5. Head for Points by Category – should be multilevel and split by card/hotel/air – basically too long link to find anything the way as it is now

    6. Please don’t mix hotel reviews , other non relevant staff etc with main site content , you can’t compete with tripadvisor so unless there is some promo for a specific hotel ideally that should be somewhere on separate page or can have option to filter that out for registered users

    • the real harry says:

isn’t the main difference with tripadvisor the point that we can trust the reviews?

      • Brian says:

We can trust the reviews to be a fair reflection of the experience Rob and Anika get – but it won’t necessarily mirror what an ordinary mortal receives. Remember that most of the reviews on here are comped, and generally for the best rooms.

        • the real harry says:

comp or no, reasonable to assume that most of the places they go to will be pretty good, so the reviews are naturally going to vary narrowly between reporting back excellent, very good & good

probably suits the readership quite nicely as they won’t be that interested in reading about some Tooting dosshouse

        • Clive says:

There seems a strange fixation on the ‘use’ or ‘relevance’ of reviews on what is a free hobby site – it’s good enough for me that the reviews are entertaining trip reports. More reviews please!

Don’t forget that a purely functional points deals site could be run by a teenager who has never set foot on a plane or in a hotel. Knowing that Rob and Anika are real people and seeing what they dislike or like is a useful benchmark to give a frame of reference when they are kindly giving us help and advice both in articles and in response to enquiries.

This site has given many of us a tangible improvement in how we spend our leisure time. Thank you Rob.

stop taking digs @ Mr Luff 🙂

      • Alexey says:

True , but until there are reviews for a least 2-3 hotels in each major city/destination this information is just not relevant to 99% of the readers

how many people would be planning to go to that specific destination at around the dates when the review appears on this site ? and once it lost in history – nobody would search for specific hotels on the points and miles focused site

So regardless good or bad , trusted or not , there is just not enough reviews/destinations to use this as reference when searching for hotels , and very little chance to be looking at specific destination at around the day when review is published

So sometimes less is more … just to illustrate … I have my travel photo blog as in name link … it is only about photos , nothing else , there is always temptation to fill it with lots of unrelated information and be “useful” for anything , but I hope to avoid this temptation, and also hope this site will stay focused on the main topic – miles and points … and all non-relevant staff should really be handled in the same way as shopperpoints i.e. vie separate subsites … so if there are plans to have hotels reviews , why not create HeadForBeds or whatever and publish it there ?

        • Rob says:

That’s not how it worls, in theory. It is more ‘got some Hilton points? Here is a smart new Hilton in a pretty European tourist spot you might want to try’. Or ‘got Hilton status via Amex Plat? Here is a somewhere you might want to use it.’ This is the sort of stuff I want to read myself which is why we run it.

          • Fenny says:

Keep the reviews. There will always be articles some people like and some don’t. Readers can choose whether to read an article or not if it’s there. Nobody can read an article that isn’t there!

          • Yuff says:

The Hilton, in Majorca, a perfect example of such a scenario!

        • Peter K says:

I have actually searched for a specific hotel on this site that i remember being reviewed before and then went and booked it! It really is useful. I lodge potentially useful info in my memory then use the sure to bring back up the details.
          Keep the reviews please Rob!

Love the site, writing, format, timing, and almost all comments. Agree threading on mobile could be improved, don’t mind O/T in general though questions that keep cropping up such as whether BAPP can be cancelled/downgraded show that either this info isn’t prominent enough or people post without bothering to read or search. All the best for 2017

  • steve says:

I think this is a great site and does exactly what it is set up to do. The 3 articles a day, along with the timing is perfect for me. A static Q and A section with the most often asked questions would be great, but as others have said Flyertalk is probably the go to place for “forum based” answers. Keep up the great work Rob

  • Mark E says:

    Take this as an example..
IHG accelerate is announced in August for qualification stays between September and December and everyone chats about it on the announcment thread for a couple of weeks.
By late November when HFP readers are trying to complete their targets and might have a query or might want some advice from fellow readers, there is no easy way to ask for help as posting on the original thread will mostly go ignored.

Great site and has been very useful to me Raffles, thank you and Happy New Year

Good point, this is where being able to subscribe to comments on a particular post would be handy.

  • Leo says:

The OT business gets on my nerves as it seems to others – it’s annoying when a topic or debate is hijacked but then to be honest I’ve no real solution to the problem – OTs can be useful. I would like to see a system whereby OTs were at least limited to a Bits thread.
Otherwise I would be happy to have a login system for comments – it does prevent trolling and it also prevents duplication of name etc. As I mentioned before I like the hotel reviews and I imagine its a fun part of the job for Rob and Anika so lets keep those please. Otherwise sterling product as per usual.

  • drz says:

Any possibility of sweepstakes/contests (of the site or from other resources) not intended just for UK residents?

  • roberto says:

What about one endless OT monthly sticky thats at the top of the time line.. That keeps the neat freaks as happy as the OT contributers/readers. Previous months threads could be archived (and searchable) to provide reference. All OT would be kept in one place where it belongs.

I for one learn as much going off piste into the OT tangents as I do from the main articles.

All the best to one and all in 2017..

  • ee says:

I wouldn’t change much, and to be honest find the OT comments can be as insightful as the contents of the main posts. E.g. Over Christmas we had two very nice meals with a decent bottle of plonk each time at cote brasserie. We we ended up paying about £25 each time thanks to a tip on here about stacking the Amex £10 off £30 offer with the Cote Rewards free bottle of wine offer.

So my ask would be keep a venue of some kind for the OT chat, if possible with functionality just to see new comments or follow a certain subject.

    • Buster says:

+1. The articles are great but I’ve found a load of information in the comments.

      Fantastic site. Thanks loads.
