IHG Rewards Club, the Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc loyalty scheme, has launched a website for its Summer 2017 promotion – IHG Accelerate Yes, it is repeating the Autumn 2015, Spring and Summer and Autumn 2016 and Spring 2017 offer.

That is not a bad thing.

To be honest, during the last 18 months IHG has been the only major hotel chain offering global promotions which offer genuine outsize value.  Everyone has their own personal target but, for most of us, the challenge is pretty straightforward.

I don’t want to knock the regular Hilton Honors ‘double points’ or ‘2000 bonus points’ offers, which are good, but nothing beats Accelerate if you get a suitably soft target.

Here are the headline details:

IHG Accelerate (Version 6) covers stays from 15th May to 31st August

All hotels are participating

Your bonus is personalised – you need to log in here to discover yours

This was my target for 48,900 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points for a stay before 30th June
  • 2,500 points on my next stay
  • 10,000 points for staying five nights
  • 5,600 points for staying two weekends (Fri / Sat or Sat / Sun)
  • 11,200 points for staying in IHG hotels in two different countries outside the UK
  • 3,600 points for booking a Bonus Points Package
  • 11,000 points for completing four of the five targets above, excluding the June bonus

I have three nights at InterContinental Le Grand in Paris booked for July, so that will tick off quite a bit of the above.  I then need to think strategically about whether it is worth pushing through some extra nights.

I don’t have an obvious way of getting the 2nd ‘non-UK’ booking yet but, with 11200 bonus points at stake, I will try to think of something.  I could switch my Kimpton Amsterdam booking in June from points to cash.

My wife got this one for 43,000 points:

  • 3,000 points for a stay before 30th June
  • 2,500 points on her next stay
  • 10,000 points for staying five nights
  • 5,600 points for staying two weekends (Fri / Sat or Sat / Sun)
  • 3,600 points for booking a Bonus Points Package
  • 600 points for spending $60 on food and beverage
  • 17,700 points for completing four of the five targets above excluding the June bonus

I’m not sure if this is possible – it depends on our weekend plans.  A couple of weekends away over the Summer would give us four nights.  I doubt she would do five midweek nights for work.

Getting 5,500 points for staying a single night – as long as it is before 30th June – is certainly worth doing.  In fact, if my wife booked just a single night before 30th June on a Bonus Points Package rate then she would get 9,100 bonus points.  If she spent $60 on food and drink that would increase to 9,700 bonus points.

Note that if you have a target which involves meeting a certain ‘food and beverage’ spending target, this is EXCLUDING VAT for UK stays.  IHG also uses a weak exchange rate when converting your spend to US$.  If you were asked to acheive $39 of cumulative spend (£31), you actually need to spend £37 due to the 20% VAT and in reality probably need to do £40 due to the FX rate IHG uses.

A note on rebooking

Most of the time, existing bookings – ie bookings made before 1st May – do count for this promotion.   For my targets, the terms all say stays must be “consumed between 15 May 2017 and 31 August 2017” and not “booked”.

Last time, however, some people got an app booking target which DID specifically state that stays must be booked after the starting date.  If you have a ‘book stays via the app’ target then check the small print.

Conclusion

As long as your target is sensible, this is highly likely to be the most generous hotel promotion you are likely to see this Summer.  And, with well over 3 months to hit your target, you have plenty of time to make the necessary stays.

Log in to the Accelerate website here and see what your target is!

One of my targets ( I suspect it will be the one that I don’t complete) Is to have two stays with my corporate rate. I’ve been offered this before on an accelerate challenge and I don’t have a corporate rate. Any ideas folks?

    • Rob says:

Check your profile, you may have a rate code stored there. I got this challenge last time presumably as my old HSBC rate code was in my profile. I only keep it there because I still have my old ID card ……

      • mark E says:

Thanks Rob. Nothing stored there . I have previously used the MasterCard 35% off rate and the similar RICs rate, I wonder if those are what its pushing me to use?

    • HayMow says:

For my husband this started appearing after he had a business IHG stay in India booked by his company travel agency. Fortunately, this Accelerate, the corporate rate target has fallen away for the first time – maybe as he hasn’t been there for 18 months.

  • Matt says:

Get closer to the rewards you want when you stay 3 night(s) and earn 2,000 bonus points

Does this mean 1 stay of 3 nights, or 3 nights in total during the promotion?

  • Genghis says:

    Thanks Rob. I’ve a perfectly achievable 57k

    • Barry cutters says:

me too , i have 59,700 total- only one i wont get is stay 4 consecutive nights. (4000)
I love this promo. I seem to get a very decent lump of points each time.

  • Ryan says:

Mine is equally achievable. Basically two countries outside the UK, two app bookings and 7 nights total for 42.5k.

The Mrs. got an even easier one: 4 nights, 1 bonus package before the 30th June for 40k.

  • Cav says:

Rob, I got stung by the T&Cs of last quarter’s Accelerate and missed out by one night due to the date I booked the hotel stays.

When I phoned to query, I was told you must book and stay within the Accelerate period for the nights to count. If you already have nights booked before this Accelerate period starts, they will not count. You will have to cancel and rebook those once the new Accelerate period starts, for them to count.

    • Dave says:

I had this for Spring 2017 too – had a stay in January already booked, but that didn’t give me the “Stay Once…” or “Stay in January” bonuses.

      • Rob says:

Wording seems different now though, they specifically say ‘consumed’.

They never gave a monkeys about booking date for the first three iterations of Accelerate and hopefully they have gone back to that.

  • Nick says:

Not too bad this time around:

    2,500 Stay Once
    10,000 Stay 5 night(s)
    3,500 Book 4 stay(s) with the IHG® App
5,600 Stay 2 weekend(s), including a Saturday night and another night
3,600 Book 1 Bonus Points Package
1,000 Redeem your points for anything

    13,800 Complete 5 of the 6 offers
5,000 Early Stay Bonus. Stay once before 30 June

    • Genghis says:

I’ve got “Stay 2 weekend(s), including a Saturday night and another night”. T&Cs not v clear. Does this mean 2 nights where one is a Saturday or 2 x 2 nights where one is a Saturday?0

      • Nick says:

I’m assuming the latter (both stays need to include a Saturday night).

Mind you, it’s probably never a good idea to assume anything with IHG 😉 but it’s how I’ll play it.

      • Lady London says:

        Latter. For sure.

  • the real harry1 says:

    sorry O/T question
safe to cancel Plat immediately after asking for points transfer to BAEC? or best to wait until they hit the a/c? (no £450 charge so far)

    • Genghis says:

I’ve always waited till the points actually hit BAEC. Should be c.3 days

      • Simon says:

Took 2 days for my points to transfer…. then cancelled it….worked a dream….. Pro-rata refund hit account overnight… I was charged a total of £9.87 for 8 days holding the card….. They didn’t even just round it to one months use……

        • boden says:

Any MS ideas to maximize use of this card before cancellation?

Is there anyway to book fully flexible ticket or hotel stay and then cancel for refund to other card?

  • Netxu says:

    Bad, so bad!

    • Genghis says:

Mrs G has something v similar. Doesn’t provide much incentive to stay…

      • Barry cutters says:

I’m guessing you are spire Genghis? Does Mrs G have status.
        Im seeing a link here

        • Genghis says:

Yes SE AMB. I use my account regularly but not all the time and my offer is decent this time around I think. Mrs G only has Plat through the IHG card and rarely uses her account and has a rubbish offer. Is there a pattern to this?

    • Von Schmallhausen says:

I got something similar. If anything it pushes me away from IHG when my Accellerate target is waaaay over the top compared with others. Really quite annoying.

    • Talay says:

      Same rubbish here

    • Paul says:

He and my gf both got this this time and last quarter. Haven’t stayed with IHG for ages as a result

    • Sprout7 says:

Same here for me and mrs. Ridiculous given how infrequently we stay – will actively avoid IHG as a result.
