IHG Rewards Club, the Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc loyalty scheme, has launched a website for its Summer 2017 promotion – IHG Accelerate Yes, it is repeating the Autumn 2015, Spring and Summer and Autumn 2016 and Spring 2017 offer.

That is not a bad thing.

To be honest, during the last 18 months IHG has been the only major hotel chain offering global promotions which offer genuine outsize value.  Everyone has their own personal target but, for most of us, the challenge is pretty straightforward.

I don’t want to knock the regular Hilton Honors ‘double points’ or ‘2000 bonus points’ offers, which are good, but nothing beats Accelerate if you get a suitably soft target.

Here are the headline details:

IHG Accelerate (Version 6) covers stays from 15th May to 31st August

All hotels are participating

Your bonus is personalised – you need to log in here to discover yours

This was my target for 48,900 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points for a stay before 30th June
  • 2,500 points on my next stay
  • 10,000 points for staying five nights
  • 5,600 points for staying two weekends (Fri / Sat or Sat / Sun)
  • 11,200 points for staying in IHG hotels in two different countries outside the UK
  • 3,600 points for booking a Bonus Points Package
  • 11,000 points for completing four of the five targets above, excluding the June bonus

I have three nights at InterContinental Le Grand in Paris booked for July, so that will tick off quite a bit of the above.  I then need to think strategically about whether it is worth pushing through some extra nights.

I don’t have an obvious way of getting the 2nd ‘non-UK’ booking yet but, with 11200 bonus points at stake, I will try to think of something.  I could switch my Kimpton Amsterdam booking in June from points to cash.

My wife got this one for 43,000 points:

  • 3,000 points for a stay before 30th June
  • 2,500 points on her next stay
  • 10,000 points for staying five nights
  • 5,600 points for staying two weekends (Fri / Sat or Sat / Sun)
  • 3,600 points for booking a Bonus Points Package
  • 600 points for spending $60 on food and beverage
  • 17,700 points for completing four of the five targets above excluding the June bonus

I’m not sure if this is possible – it depends on our weekend plans.  A couple of weekends away over the Summer would give us four nights.  I doubt she would do five midweek nights for work.

Getting 5,500 points for staying a single night – as long as it is before 30th June – is certainly worth doing.  In fact, if my wife booked just a single night before 30th June on a Bonus Points Package rate then she would get 9,100 bonus points.  If she spent $60 on food and drink that would increase to 9,700 bonus points.

Note that if you have a target which involves meeting a certain ‘food and beverage’ spending target, this is EXCLUDING VAT for UK stays.  IHG also uses a weak exchange rate when converting your spend to US$.  If you were asked to acheive $39 of cumulative spend (£31), you actually need to spend £37 due to the 20% VAT and in reality probably need to do £40 due to the FX rate IHG uses.

A note on rebooking

Most of the time, existing bookings – ie bookings made before 1st May – do count for this promotion.   For my targets, the terms all say stays must be “consumed between 15 May 2017 and 31 August 2017” and not “booked”.

Last time, however, some people got an app booking target which DID specifically state that stays must be booked after the starting date.  If you have a ‘book stays via the app’ target then check the small print.

Conclusion

As long as your target is sensible, this is highly likely to be the most generous hotel promotion you are likely to see this Summer.  And, with well over 3 months to hit your target, you have plenty of time to make the necessary stays.

Log in to the Accelerate website here and see what your target is!

I have three nights at InterContinental Le Grand in Paris booked for July, so that will tick off quite a bit of the above.

So existing bookings made prior to registering & prior to the announcement of the Q2 2017 promo count ??

    • JamesW says:

Sorry, you actually answer my question later on in the article. I jumped the gun as was something I’d been wondering since getting the promo in the first place.
Booked some stays the day before the promo was announced and have been kicking myself.
Am impressed they include (most) existing bookings.

    • Rob says:

Yes, historically (except for app booking bonuses).

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

I can do mine in two nights – so ow to cancel a points+cash already booked!

Wife got a seven out of eight option – but one task is to apply for the Credit card, which she did for the last accelerate! So it is a seven out of seven requiring five nights, including three different brands.

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

      Just noticed:

One of her tasks is to book a Points+Cash night.

Do points+cash usually count for a night’s stay – I can see that reward nights don’t count, but with points+cash you are basically just buying the points to make it a reward booking.

      Confused!

      • HayMow says:

If you complain about the CCard one, they should credit you with the points for that target (worked for my husband), though doesn’t help you with the 7 out 8 as that then becomes a 7 out of 7 (or again did for my husband).
re Points + Cash, no, normally they don’t count as a stay, as a stay would be a points-earning reservation from what I understand – happy to be corrected by anyone else. Alternatively I find their email customer service quite responsive.

      • Rob says:

Yes, it’s weird. It will count for that target. I don’t think it will count for any other target including x nights ones.

  • Nicklas says:

    2,500 Stay Once Get 2,500
    32,000 Stay More, Earn More
3,200 Travel with the IHG® App
    4,000 A Bonus Weekend Stay
    12,800 Globetrotter Bonus
    3,600 Earn More, Faster
    13,000 Your Achievement Bonus
    3,000 Early Stay Bonus

    Total: 74,100 points.

I will for sure tick off the stay once, the early stay and the a bonus weekend ones for 9,500 points. The Globetrotter bonus is difficult though with four different counties and the stay more is 16 nights. Granted I have three upcoming nights in Bucharest, two in Porto (AMB certificate), four in Lisbon (points booking) and two in Estoril.

Thinking of re-booking the Bucharest one via the app and add a bonus package. Unfortunately the Estoril one I booked the non-refundable rate.

  • JamesW says:

Pretty good for me I think.
I do like the Accelerate Promos and bevause of them I make bookings & spend with IHG that I wouldn’t usually do. IHG wins by driving my spend up and I get to go to places I wouldn’t have for some time (places on your list you’d like to visit but just don’t get around to !!).
I have completed all my ‘challenges’ in each of the past accelerate promos with the exception of the Q1 2017 promo as it wasn’t worth my while and I was overly busy during that period.
This Q2 2017 promo is for more points and more achievable for me.
Still not in the league of my first Accelerate promo though; 2 free nights anywhere for essentially two 2 night stays anywhere – got $900 value from that at Intercontinental Danang (plus an upgrade so actually higher value).
Anyway, this time I am going to strive to achieve it. Not going to mattress run to crappy hotels by the side of motorways but going to pick some destinations I fancy visiting but never get around to.!!
Looks like 3 paid weekends (2 of them ex-UK) plus one cash & points night booked in certain ways should get me most of it. Then just the $140 spend (cumulative I hope) on food & beverages I may or may not bother with as its a small amount of points and I nearly always eat away from the hotel – except at Danang’s La Maison 1888 where I ate twice in my 2 night stay. Highly reccomended 🙂

Do nights booked using points count as qualifying stay? I have 5 nights booked using PointBreaks in the coming months, which would be excellent. Sadly I have two nights in a Holiday Inn booked for before 15 May, so they won’t count.

They have offered me a total of 35,500 if all targets are met. If anyone is interested, here are my targets:

2,500: Early Stay Bonus. Stay once before 30 June and get 2,500 bonus points.
1,000: Stay Once Get 1,000. Thank you for being a loyal IHG® Rewards Club member. Stay once and earn 1,000 bonus points.

15,000: Stay 3 more nights. Get an additional 15,000 bonus points after night 18.

  • JamesW says:

Ooh, I will be visiting Marseilles soon but am not staying at the Intercontinental there, however have heard their restaurant ( Alcyone Restaurant ) is very good. If I’m not staying there but eat in their restaurant is there any way that would / could count towards my food & beverage spend challenge ?!

I’m guessing it wouldn’t but if I paid on an IHG Credit card and kept the receipt I would at least have proof.

    • JamesW says:

Nuts. Found the answer in the TS & Cs….

“The Spend on Food or Beverage must be charged to the room bill at check-out.”

That is what I expected, to be fair.
Hmmm…. Maybe I should stay one night at the Intercontinental Marseille – 40k points seems good value and then my spend in their restaurant would count.
Was going to stay at MGallery on Vieux Port and then probably an Ibis near Cassis / La Ciotat (using a free weekend Avis Rental).

      • Markymarc says:

Beware – the F+B spend is subject to sterling/dollar fluctuations and most importantly it’s ex VAT. I made that mistake last year, bought a bottle of wine for no real reason, thought I’d cracked it but with VAT missed my target by 31p! It would have tipped me over to claim the bonus so it was important so sadly missed it, very disappointed indeed….

        • JamesW says:

That’s harsh. Did you throw yourself on their mercy & ask if they could count it as a goodwill gesture ?
I would have at least asked.

      • Marco says:

Mgallery at the port is tired and quite noisy, trams outside the window. Cannot recommend. Intercontinental is beautiful if slight off the centre. Maybe 10 mins walk. Far better than MGallery.

      • Leo says:

Let me know if you find reward availability. Couldn’t find any in June!

    • BP says:

IC Marseilles is awesome. We were staying on points and got upgraded to one of the terrace rooms overlooking the port as we got engaged earlier in the trip.

  • Markymarc says:

    Just got mine, reasonable enough.
Just one question, you mentioned a pre-existing stay in Paris, I have one at IC in Porto in June, should/will that count?
It worked last time with a booking in Rome so fingers crossed, presume I will know soon enough.
Strange that the promos vary so wildly for different members, staying 20 nights seems crazy!

    • Rob says:

I am expecting it to count and historically they have – apart from an app booking criteria last time.

That said, when I was at Le Grand last Summer they reduced the price almost weekly in the run up to my stay so I ended up rebooking 3-4 times anyway!

  • Susan says:

Does a stay in Rep of Ireland count towards Gloetretter target?

    • Susan says:

      Sp. -Globetrotter

    • HayMow says:

If your country of residence registered in your IHG account is UK (or indeed anything other than Republic of Ireland) then yes it should. (For your own peace of mind you can always email IHG customer service to ask them to confirm this.)
