Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Why are some Lloyds Avios cardholders not receiving any points?

Regular readers will know that I hold the Lloyds Bank credit card operation in contempt.  It regularly manages to achieve levels of incompetence which other banks simply couldn’t match if they tried.

Who else, for example, would take five days to send out ‘refer a friend’ emails after you request them?  Fewer than 1 in 3 people who I refer for the Lloyds Avios cards actually manage to receive the email and receive the bonus points (my Amex strike rate is 80%).

Who else would freeze your credit card on suspicion of money laundering because your spouse paid your bill from their bank account (as happened to me)?

Unfortunately, the Lloyds Avios Rewards credit card remains an excellent product.  It is the only credit card in Britain to offer reward points (of any kind) alongside 0% foreign exchange fees.  The Avios upgrade voucher you receive for spending £7,000 – which can be across the Amex and the MasterCard – is also a great deal for a solo traveller who might find the British Airways American Express 2-4-1 voucher useless.

So, as I say, I keep recommending the card regardless.

And yet …..

There is a group of cardholders – it isn’t clear how large, but many are HfP readers – who have never received a single Avios point from their Lloyds Avios credit card.

I have been receiving these complaints from readers for well over a year.  To be honest I didn’t take them too seriously at first because IT cock-ups with data transfer of points are a fairly regular event.  And, in any event, how hard would it be for Lloyds to manually send Avios a list of accounts and the points due?

And yet, when pressurised, Lloyds can do it.  What a surprise.

This is what happened to a reader recently:

Opened a Lloyds Avios Rewards credit card account

Received no Avios at all after 10 weeks

Lodged a complaint, told it would take 12 weeks to resolve!

Waited 4 weeks, lodged another complaint threatening a referral to the Ombudsman

Missing Avios arrived 4 days later

So, pressure works.  This reader also referred his wife for her own card.  After two months, she had received no Avios.  She complained and was told by Lloyds that it would take 26 WEEKS for them to credit her the missing points.

The good news is that Lloyds is now offering a defined piece of compensation.

If you are missing Avios points, you should contact Lloyds and say that you need them for an imminent booking.  Magically, the Avios will appear.  Lloyds will also pay you £150 in compensation.

Don’t expect any missing Avios to appear without intervention.  What is interesting, from all of the different cases I have seen, is that no-one has ever been told what the problem actually is, and customers who question the bank are told that even they don’t know.

As I said, that’s Lloyds for you.

Have to say that i have never had any problems at all with the Lloyds Avios cards. I received the initial bonus and always get my Avios transferred to my Avios account every statement date. I use the cards abroad all the time for transactions, again never a problem. Obviously I use the Halifax Clarity card for overseas cash withdrawals as Lloyds charge a fee for that.

Referred my better half and again, no problems. Perhaps this post will tempt fate for next weeks trip?!!

  • Rob says:

Limits are on the BAEC page on part pay (can’t link as on phone). Varies by class and flight length.

    • Graham Walsh says:

Thanks Rob, messing around with other flights, it seems, that it shows what is available, regardless of how many avios are in your account.

  • Alex says:

I must admit I have not had any issues with the Lloyds cards. I first got the free card in 2013 during the 15,000 Avios promo for spending £500 a month. I upgraded the card to the Avios Rewards version in 2015. They still gave me the double points for 6 months promo. All Avios have gone across fine, and the upgrade vouchers have been triggered without problems. I rarely have a declined transaction, and overseas transactions have been fine, whether I put a travel mark on my account or not, though I do try to remember! I also hold a Lloyds current account. I don’t know if that changes things, but I must say I have had a positive experience with the card and Lloyds…

    • dtfan says:

wow – are you actually expecting folk to read your essays? please try and edit your comments a bit for brevity!!!

      • Julian says:

No I’m not expecting short attention span two line email writing marketing buzzword led types like you to read them. Instead only the geeks amongst us who must still have time to read all those hugely long journalistic discourses in the old fashioned printed newspapers, as opposed to those of you who stupidly get all your news in 64 characters on Twitter and are then surprised to find it was fabricated by someone mentally deranged in their bedroom on the other side of the world……….

        • dtfan says:

haha I love your posts for the sheer lack of insight – you’re so quick to accuse people and then can’t take a little criticism yourself!

        • Julian says:

I see dtfan did not offer a Reply option to his last post attacking mine. The only people I know of with a power like that are Rob and Anika.

          • Rob says:

Comments can only go down a certain number of levels (4?). If D replies to C who replied to B who replied to A they no-one can reply to D.

          are ye drunk, man?

    • Julian says:

It also seems fairly obvious that Lloyds TSB card division senior management are sufficiently corporately complacent that they do not allocate anyone at all to look for negative experiences here or on the Moneysavingexpert forum so that they can learn lessons and avoid alienating customers like this again in the future. One has to fear for the long term future of any organisation which quite so clearly thinks that its Directors and not its customers are King.

      • Sussex Bantam says:

Yay Julian’s back ! I make that first sentence 52 words long without any punctuation. I think that must be a record…

      • mark2 says:

        Please keep up!
Lloyds and TSB were separated several years ago.

    • the real harry1 says:

      interesting anecdope, thanks

    • Alex says:

I really can’t remember much about the process of upgrading. However it was all done over the phone and I didn’t remember it being painful, although they said they were obliged to offer me other options including the Choice Rewards credit card which I declined. My member since date also reset but I think it’s a small matter. Perhaps I’ve just been very lucky…

  • Ant says:

Can the Lloyds voucher be used for 2 one way Hong Kong to London for my husband and myself ?

    • phatbear says:

As long as you have enough miles then of course you can

    • Will says:

You may have to call to book this though, I remember something about not being able to book one ways ending in the UK online with the lloyds voucher.

      • Alan says:

They certainly can’t handle domestic connections or open jaw itineraries online, they might manage simple one-ways to London, not certain. That’s a fantastic way to use them though given the lack of fuel surcharges ex-HKG 😀

        • Genghis says:

You can’t book a one way online using the voucher

          • Alan says:

Ah OK, I always have to call for domestic connection anyway. So basically sounds like apart from a straightforward return from London you need to call – clearly the Avios.com guys have been poaching those superb BA IT bods… 😉

          • Julian says:

The “superb BA IT bods” are now all mainly workers in India now that my friend with over 30 years experience in IT at BA and most of his fellow co-workers have either already gone or are now in their last few weeks of only part time employment with the company. The main transfer of IT function from BA Waterside has already happened. Also some of the BA mainframe booking system code is so ancient and cobbled together that probably the only solution is to bin it completely and rewrite everything from the ground up, which will obviously be far cheaper to do in India than in the UK.

  • bill says:

Does Lloyd provide supplementary reward cards ? 4 cards on one account might be a bit much though

  • The Paw says:

Don’t know if it’s luck, but I also have to report positively on this product. I applied for these cards a few months ago, but with some trepidation due to Rob’s previous articles re the Lloyds cards. However, no issues for me AT ALL. Received the referral bonus (thanks, Mrs Rob!) immediately. Avios are posting to the account supplied during application (don’t know if an additional account was created for me but the Avios are going into the correct account every month on the 5th), including the bonus Amex avios. This is my primary card and is used HEAVILY by myself and Mrs. Paw (due to Amex bonus) and the correct number of Avios on all 4 cards are received every month. For obvious reasons we use these cards overseas and have never had a transaction declined, either abroad or in the UK (we have NEVER informed Lloyds of travel plans). Also use these cards for Apple Pay on phone and watch and no issues there (except at places that don’t accept Amex for Apple Pay so not a Lloyds issue, but it only takes 3 seconds to choose the Mastercard on the phone/watch). On hitting £7k spend I received an email informing me of the upgrade voucher and it showed immediately on my Avios account (and Awardwallet). And the app works well, providing near real-time updates.

So sympathy for those who have been unlucky and have suffered through all the issues (happy that most have received some compensation, but I feel that doesn’t always make up for lost time and angst), but these cards work exactly as I would expect them to. I would recommend them to anyone based on MY experience, but would definitely refer people to the relevant articles / replies on this site…..

  • Gio says:

Had my card since December – 3 weeks wait for Raffles’ email… not a single point added. Calls avios/lloyds 5 weeks ago and my case will take 12 weeks apparently. have emailed via resolver.co.uk to see if they can speed it up. Absolute joke!

  • Simon says:

Had the card since jan no points posted. Told to wait 12 weeks about a month ago so will be chasing them soon.

    • Liz says:

You need to escalate it to official complaint before anything gets done

      • Simon says:

Been told now 26 weeks. And apparntly someone will call me back from their dedicated team.
