Why are some Lloyds Avios cardholders not receiving any points?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Regular readers will know that I hold the Lloyds Bank credit card operation in contempt.  It regularly manages to achieve levels of incompetence which other banks simply couldn’t match if they tried.

Who else, for example, would take five days to send out ‘refer a friend’ emails after you request them?  Fewer than 1 in 3 people who I refer for the Lloyds Avios cards actually manage to receive the email and receive the bonus points (my Amex strike rate is 80%).

Who else would freeze your credit card on suspicion of money laundering because your spouse paid your bill from their bank account (as happened to me)?

Unfortunately, the Lloyds Avios Rewards credit card remains an excellent product.  It is the only credit card in Britain to offer reward points (of any kind) alongside 0% foreign exchange fees.  The Avios upgrade voucher you receive for spending £7,000 – which can be across the Amex and the MasterCard – is also a great deal for a solo traveller who might find the British Airways American Express 2-4-1 voucher useless.

So, as I say, I keep recommending the card regardless.

And yet …..

There is a group of cardholders – it isn’t clear how large, but many are HfP readers – who have never received a single Avios point from their Lloyds Avios credit card.

I have been receiving these complaints from readers for well over a year.  To be honest I didn’t take them too seriously at first because IT cock-ups with data transfer of points are a fairly regular event.  And, in any event, how hard would it be for Lloyds to manually send Avios a list of accounts and the points due?

And yet, when pressurised, Lloyds can do it.  What a surprise.

This is what happened to a reader recently:

Opened a Lloyds Avios Rewards credit card account

Received no Avios at all after 10 weeks

Lodged a complaint, told it would take 12 weeks to resolve!

Waited 4 weeks, lodged another complaint threatening a referral to the Ombudsman

Missing Avios arrived 4 days later

So, pressure works.  This reader also referred his wife for her own card.  After two months, she had received no Avios.  She complained and was told by Lloyds that it would take 26 WEEKS for them to credit her the missing points.

The good news is that Lloyds is now offering a defined piece of compensation.

If you are missing Avios points, you should contact Lloyds and say that you need them for an imminent booking.  Magically, the Avios will appear.  Lloyds will also pay you £150 in compensation.

Don’t expect any missing Avios to appear without intervention.  What is interesting, from all of the different cases I have seen, is that no-one has ever been told what the problem actually is, and customers who question the bank are told that even they don’t know.

As I said, that’s Lloyds for you.

  • Eoghan Galgey says:

Hey Rob, how do I get a referral for amex gold. I have a bapp can I refer myself?

    • Genghis says:

Can only refer within the same card “family” and as you don’t get a bonus if have had a card in that family within last six months, essentially means you can’t refer yourself.

      • w says:

Hm. I waiting to hear back from Raffles for an SPG referral (enjoying the bank holiday weekend?) – is the link to the SPG application page sufficient, or do I need to get a personalized email?
The ‘apply’ link in the credit card overview appears hfp specific (headforpoints.com/hfp/starwood-amex/)

      • Eoghan Galgey says:

Thanks. If someone, (Rob?) Could send me a referral that would be awesome. Sorry about the oT comment

    • Julian says:

Thread hijack, hijack, hijack. Do you high rolling constant flying Club World for business people think that the entire world revolves only around BA or American Express Amex and that those of us who only spend enough and/or frequently travel alone, so have the Lloyds Avios Duo card instead, just don’t matter at all??????

If you are going to post off topic then at least post in a thread that was mainly about the BA Amex or Amex’s own Amex (the cards with the Centurion on them) that you had some vaguely related question on.

Or alternatively Rob could create a proper discussion forum in which people could start threads or join them on the topics that they personally are actually interested in.

Thank you I feel much better now.

      • Genghis says:

It seems Eoghan is a newcomer to commenting on HfP – at least I’ve never seen him comment before – and asked a genuine question, albeit a little OT, but posted in the most fitting (about credit cards / avios) article of the day.

        • dtfan says:

totally agree – yet another rant from Julian

          • TripRep says:

Hey now folks, please go easy on our one of our Hispanophiles, good to see Jules posts this eve, I for one have missed the entertainment he accidentally brings to the arena 😀

Eoghan – Welcome to the mad house, honestly we generally tend to get on better than this, maybe its pre-Monday stress creeping in. If you have a like minded pal you could alternate in refering each other, food for thought…

Back on Topic, seems Lloyd’s will not be on my hit list of cards to consider…

      • Mr Dee says:

this comment is so hard to read

  • Gill says:

No points or voucher for me. Quoted 12 weeks resolution by customer service about 3 weeks back. Sounds like it’s worth me pushing for comp.

Thankfully it’s no inconvenience to me at the moment but some extra cash on top of the decent avios rate and 0% purchase would be nice.

  • Amo says:

I’ve had this card for a few years now, and have completely lost confidence in using it.

In my opinion, as a card to use abroad it’s worthless. Despite informing Lloyds that I’m travelling, I have the majority of transactions declined and end up having to use another card which incurs the fee.

The card will be cancelled once I’ve triggered my next upgrade voucher (via domestic spend!)

    • Julian says:

I used my new exchange rate fee free but £24 per annum subscription Avios Duo (as opposed to the completely free legacy Lloyds Avios Duo that I held as a follow on from NatWest Gold Plus Air Miles earning card) for about five weeks in Spain last year without any prior notice and also within only a week of it being issued. I did not give Lloyds any notice that I was going to be abroad.

Despite this I had zero problems using the Mastercard for all of my transaction in Spain apart from the small number I could instead manage to get accepted on the Amex card (basically all Repsol, BP or CEPSA petrol stations plus Mcdonalds and also all supermarket shopping at the Eroski supermarket chain, although I am also hoping Amex acceptance will have broadened this year following the EU enforced reduction in Amex commission rates in the way that has just happened in the UK with the likes of Poundland & More and B&M Discount stores, who are rather incredibly both now accepting it).

The only problem I had with my Lloyds Duo card was with a discount independent petrol station known as Tangerine (close to Palma airport at Es Molinar) that on one day I visited could manage to find a way to manually magnetically swipe the Amex card on one of its three chip and PIN machines but where on another visit at a very busy time of day a much less bright female cashier (the person who could take the Amex card late at night when the station was quiet was older and male) insisted that they did not take Amex at all and that I must pay on Visa or Mastercard,

So I would be interested to know where Lloyds were not accepting your transactions without prior notice. My money would probably be on you trying to push through very large value hotel bills at five star establishments in countries without chip and PIN (hence where fraud levels with stolen UK cards are much higher) well outside Europe or North America. For instance Thailand or Vietnam where fraudulent use of European cards is rife.

Obviously Lloyds don’t want to lose business but they do also have to protect customers against such fraudsters. My mother’s own credit card was cloned and then used in Thailand with a signature three or four years ago, even though she has never, ever been to the said country. She does however use her credit card at restaurants a lot (unlike me who generally tries to avoid this over priced method of eating food) and I believe it is there (when the card is out of the customer’s hands and the signature and CVV number can all be easily scanned and recorded out of the customer’s sight) that these major international frauds generally originate, especially in those smaller non chain restaurants where most of the waiting staff may not even have the legal right to work in the UK.

      • dtfan says:

Yawn – you tell others to stick on-topic but at least they manage to not have verbal diarrhoea!!

        • Julian says:

You just managed to edit your own post within a few minutes of making it (a power the rest of us here don’t have) so I can only assume that you are Rob, Raffles or Anika in disguise?

          • Julian says:

Oops apologies to Rob and Anika as have just realised that the response I thought was edited was actually responding to my other earlier post in this thread.

  • TGLoyalty says:

Can see some have stopped receiving after having some early on but have those that have never received checked that a new account t hasn’t been opened?

    • mark2 says:

the purchases still appear on the original account but not the Avios.
      It is a known problem.

  • Nicky says:

O/T wonder if anyone can advise: I am looking to book Avios tickets next month using Lloyds upgrade vouchers. Would I be correct in assuming that the avios points required are based on a London departure?
Secondly I live up North which would mean booking domestic flights using cash, so tickets will be on different codes. Not a problem going out as I can go a day early and stay o/n, but on the way back will I have to collect my luggage and then check back in again even though it would be BA all the way? Is there any way around this? All advice/suggestions would be appreciated

    • Alex H says:

Hi. You can get a regional connection included in your ticket for free. You have to phone the call centre but it doesn’t cost you anything extra. From experience I’d check the website first for available flights including connection and ask for the ones that suit you best as they tried to give me ones that they wanted to get rid of.

      • Jimmy says:

free? no extra taxes/surcharges? is this proven and unique to the lloyds voucher?

even on a 241 or regular LH BA.com reward booking, such taxes/surcharges are applicable on the ‘free’ domestic legs…and they are NOT cheap.

      • Alan says:

For long-haul flights it doesn’t cost any extra Avios but there are normally additional taxes/fees/charges (which didn’t used to be the case).

Thankfully the agents are pretty decent on the phone – just research availability beforehand (for your long-haul and connecting flights) then read them off to them.

        • Jimmy says:

Yeah I realise there are no extra Avios required, thus why I never mentioned them.

          • the_real_a says:

Just for clarity – there is no additional Avios required for long haul domestic connections, but extra tax/fees are payable which is about £50 each way. You need to phone up to ensure its all on the single ticket so you get protection from delays. I have done this for the last couple of years.

          • Nicky says:

            Thanks everyone for your advice

    • TGLoyalty says:

Have to weigh up the extra fees for adding it onto the redemption vs any saving on booking seperate flights but with the headache of collecting your bags and rechecking on return.

Personally unless the difference is huge I’d just add on to the PNR. Hotel won’t be free the night before and no stress on the return.

      • Alan says:

Agreed, plus the extra Avios have a cost too. If in Club at least having your domestic flight in CE will place you at the front of the plane in case of a tight outbound connection too.

        • TripRep says:

But according to recent reports you pay for the privilege of a single domestic sector connecting to a CW/F flight, it used to be £35ish.

I’ve seen reports of a “free leg” coming in at £75 because they now class it as CE…. Even if you have a tipple, £40 is a fair bit for a cuppa & a M&S sarnie.

I would wager the extra ££ goes towards BA insuring themselves against EU261 claims for delays…. 😀

          • Alan says:

Ah OK, I hadn’t seen it go that high, last time I was looking was on an ex-HKG redemption though so the lack of YQ probably was what kept the cost down.

Totally agree re what they’re doing with the cash as a result! If you make a phone booking (or potentially if you use the stopover functionality on the website) you should be able to get the domestic to book into economy, I certainly managed to get them to do that on an European OB redemption, where the extra points for connecting in Club were horrific!

  • Liz says:

I am still having problems with points posting. We took the card out in Dec – after several calls and misinformation we finally got allocated a complaints manager. After 4 months of no points they manually transferred our missing 12818 pts – we received the £24 fee back, £275 in compensation and £13 for phone calls. The 5th statement has now been produced and the pts did not transfer automatically – these have now been added manually and this has been added to my ongoing complaint. I have just triggered the £7k spend for the upgrade voucher – been told if it doesn’t appear after 4 wks they can manually add it. Also been told that I will receive all the points again that have not automatically transferred within 26 weeks. Currently using it ok in the USA and getting around 1.28 rate – just have to check it every month and phone them if they don’t post automatically. Assume more compensation will follow.

  • Becca says:

I was in Africa for a month last year, and keyed in my countries and travel dates with Lloyds. All was fine until it was suddenly blocked three weeks in. Called Lloyds, answered their identity verification and security questions, then was weirdly told “my security hasn’t gone through” and I needed to visit a branch with my ID. Reiterated that I was in Africa, and I’d email them a copy. Bluntly told “we don’t have email” and that I’d need to “fax” it. Pointed out the difficulty I’d have faxing it, but it fell on deaf ears.

Eventually faxed it, called them back, only to be told by a different agent and without a hint of irony that “it’s taking a while to verify because the image isn’t very clear.”

The card is fine when it works. But they’ll happily strand you overseas, so have backups.

  • aliks says:

I must be the rare exception – I am completely happy with my Lloyds Amex, I got my referral bonuses, I loved double-Avios-for-the-first-6-months – 2.5 Avios per pound.

My experience is that the card just works overseas as promised. I rarely tell Lloyds about travelling and I have never had the card refused.

I also love the vouchers, and had no trouble using two of them for myself and wife to book an open jaws business class flight to New Orleans / Mexico for New Year. A great way to get a refund from the VATman!

    • RTS says:

Same here. I have churned this card twice over 1.5 yrs and both times I have never had an issue. I kind of wish I did though, seems like plenty of people are earning quite substantial compensation from all this!
