New: earn Avios and save 5% at World Duty Free / Dufry stores across Europe

I’ll get to the Avios part of this deal in a minute, but first some background information ……

You might not know the name Dufry, but it is the dominant global duty free retailer.  As well as owning World Duty Free in the UK, it also owns:

  • Dufry (various locations)
  • World Duty Free (outside the UK, it is in Western Europe, Americas, Middle East, Asia)
  • Nuance (Europe, Asia, North America)
  • Hellenic Duty Free (Greece)
  • Colombian Emerald (Carribean, Central America, Norwegian Cruise Line vessels)
  • Duty Free Uruguay (Uruguay)
  • Hudson (US & Canada)
  • Duty Free Shop Argentina (Argentina)
  • RegStaer (Russia)

Basically, you can’t avoid them!

Dufry recently launched its own app-based loyalty programme called Red By Dufry.  The key benefit of downloading this app is that you get a 5% discount on purchases at selected Dufry stores.

Red by DUFRY

The app – and therefore the 5% discount – currently works in:

  • Spain
  • Russia
  • Argentina
  • Brazil
  • Greece
  • Switzerland

The company intends to add another 20 countries in the next year, so hopefully it will come to the UK too.

If you visit airports in the above countries on a regular basis, you could make decent savings by downloading Red By Dufry for iOS or Android.

With $400 of spend you reach Gold level, where your discount rises to 7%.  At $1000 of spend, over a two year period, you reach Platinum.  As well as increasing your discount to 10%, you receive various other benefits.

Certain airports have their own additional deals.  Spend €150 at Barcelona-El Prat, Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas, Bilbao, Valencia or Seville airports and you will receive free lounge access, for example.

How it works

Registration is tricky via the iOS app because the ‘date of birth’ function is messed up.  Once you have selected your date of birth you need to touch somewhere outside the box to go back to the main page – except that the box takes up 99% of your screen space!   If you find it too fiddly you can register online via this page.

You can add your Iberia Plus Avios number during the sign up process.

And there is an Avios angle too ….

Iberia Plus is a partner with Red By Dufry.

If you link your Iberia Plus account with the Red By Dufry app, you will earn (Spanish airports only, in World Duty Free or Canariensis stores):

  • 3 Avios per €1 as a Silver Red by DUFRY member
  • 6 Avios per €1 as a Gold Red by DUFRY member
  • 9 Avios per €1 as a Platinum Red by DUFRY member

You can either flash your Iberia Plus card or the Red By Dufry app.  As long as the two are linked, you will get your Avios.

So, for example …..

Spend €40 at Dufry in Madrid Airport and you will receive a 5% discount, saving €2, and receive 114 Avios points (3 per €1).

Until it launches at World Duty Free in the UK, Red By Dufry is only going to be of minor interest to UK Avios collectors.  However, if you are travelling through Spain, Russia, Argentina, Brazil, Greece or Switzerland you might as well download the app and pick up your 5% discount – plus Avios in Spain.

You can find out more about the Avios angle of Red By Dufry on this page of the Iberia website.

Thanks to Dmitry who runs and whose articles on Red By Dufry I have borrowed from heavily.

  1. Richard says:

Sounds like an easy way to ‘earn’ an Iberia Avios or two to activate an account enabling future transfers.

  2. Perfect timing, I’m off to Barcelona in a couple of weeks and will be buying a fair bit at duty free. Thanks for the tip off.

  3. Alex W says:

I received an email yesterday from Amex as below. Seems targeted and is not in the normal “offers” section of my account. Worth checking your inbox/spam if it’s of interest.

“Save this offer to your Card and receive a £10 statement credit when you spend £70 or more at World Duty Free on your American Express® Card.*
Offer ends 31 August 2017. Valid once per Card, to the first 15,000 Cardmembers.”

    • Hardly a deal, is it? (especially when you consider Amazon often sell the same products cheaper; e.g. booze, perfume etc)

      • Alex W says:

Erm, well it could be up to 14% off – which beats the 5% discount advertised in the article. There might be a way to make the offers double/triple stack (cue Harry, the stacking king…).

  4. Roger I* says:

I signed up to Red by Dufry using the Iberia link on my laptop and now have one of those scanner codes. With flights coming up to Fuerteventura and Zurich, flashing a print of the code just might work. I’ll also take my IB+ card to FUE but assume no Avios at ZRH.

  5. RussellH says:

Pity you ned a fancy phone and a #*#1?!*** ‘app’ as well as Iberia+ for it to work.

Heinemann Duty Free you just have your Miles+More card swiped

  6. Not sure of the rate, but haven’t you always been able to collect avios at Madrid airport by showing them your Iberia plus card? I’m sure there was signs everywhere stating that the last time I was there

    • Really? That’s interesting. I’m at the IC Madrid in Sept so worth a try. Going to FRA same day so perhaps works with Luft?

  7. Lady London says:

Hopefully they won’t exclude the discount off cigarettes and tobacco
