Which British Airways European routes do not offer lounge access?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

On Saturday we ran a review of the ANA lounge at Porto airport.  This is notable because – whilst it is the only lounge at Porto – British Airways refuses to pay for Club Europe or status passengers to use it.

(If you read HfP by email, you didn’t receive this review because I felt it was a bit of a niche topic to drop into 10,000 inboxes.  You can read the article here.)

Courtesy of Flyertalk, I have a list of all British Airways short-haul destinations which do not offer lounge access.  This is a great bit of crowd sourcing work from the FT community. Keep this list in mind next time you book a trip and are considering whether to upgrade to Club Europe or not.

    Hey Rob,

PFO lounge takes PP/LP, I’ve been there (and got slaughtered) many a time and it’s listed on the PP app.

  • Save East Coast Rewards says:

I remember years ago RTM used to have a lounge I’m not sure when it disappeared but it hasn’t been available for quite a while. I think it was 2007 when I last used it.

It’s probably also worth mentioning which airports BA gives you a voucher in lieu of lounge access. They did last time I flew to RTM (2015) it was based on a number of items rather than worth a fixed price.

On the topic of lounges time to highlight more penny pinching by Virgin Trains East Coast who currently make Alex Cruz look generous. In their King’s Cross lounge they have removed the complimentary Coke/Diet Coke so all that remains is water, orange juice or hot drinks. Proper china cups have been replaced with disposable ones for a while but now glasses have also been removed meaning orange juice/water also has to go in a disposable cup designed for hot drinks. In the other lounges on the route (which have never had the luxury of Coke) there’s been reports of the fridges running out of water and biscuits not being stocked!

Compare to BA I have access to the First Wing at LHR which reduces most of the airport hassles and I can eat in the lounge. I had always preferred train (1st class) to plane on the east coast route at least as far as Newcastle. However cuts to staffing levels on board has meant it’s now a lottery as to whether you get the advertised catering offering and the penny pinching elsewhere has meant that they’ve actually made BA look attractive on domestic flights.

    • Genghis says:

I noticed that myself on Mon. Pineapple juice is also available next to the orange juice. The 1st onboard offering was poor – a “gormet” sausage roll each way. James Martin should hang his head in shame putting his name to that.

      • Save East Coast Rewards says:

The second juice dispenser has been empty when I’ve been in the lounge.

The JM sausage roll actually has its fans but there’s always supposed to be more substantial hot options on the menu. One of the advantages of East Coast over West Coast was all trains from first to the last were supposed to offer hot food as well as lighter options. Now with staffing cutbacks many trains have no hot food at all, not even the sausage roll. Unfortunately it’s a lottery as to which trains will be having the limited catering sometimes even peak evening meal trains are affected.

I hope James Martin regrets his decision to be associated with them. The sausage roll was never meant to be a replacement for the meals, just a lighter alternative. On weekday trains sandwiches were supposed to be served on a plate, now they’re handed out in a box. I was on a train recently where the staff said that particular train has had the ovens out of service for over 3 weeks!

        • Genghis says:

I hadn’t been in First on the ECML for a while and was just shocked. Heading out of London my colleague got the hoisin duck wrap which he says was inedible. No poppy seed lemon muffins (per menu) available but only chocolate ones.

Is the breakfast offering still decent?

          • Save East Coast Rewards says:

The breakfast hasn’t changed, so is decent as long as it’s served (I’ve heard of fewer problems on the morning trains to be fair).

  • Genghis says:

When did BIO get a lounge?

    • MrHandBaggaeOnly says:

Not sure, but we used it last October when flying CE and despite it being small, found it very pleasant. It was also being used by some of the Game of Thrones cast, but we didn’t realise at the time as we don’t watch the show. Had to try and work out why everyone kept wanting selfies!

  • Dan says:

Ibiza accepts Priority Pass now. Was there a couple of weeks back and spent an hour or so there.

Amazing the number of people flying CE on the BA flight that came in wanting to use it only to be turned away.

  • Julie says:

I’ve been to Tallinn and they do have a lounge which I got into with my BA gold card, absolutely no problem at all. I can confirm Madeira doesn’t have one.

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

We’re you actually flying BA? You can get in the TLL lounge with BA status when flying NoRRA (Finnair) but they should not let you in when flying BA. You’d need a Priority Pass for that.

The reason is AY have signed up to use the lounge and BA hasn’t.

Unless BA has seen sense in the last few weeks and signed up.

      • Down the Back says:

Was just about to post had been in TLL lounge when read your post, and realised I had been flying with Norra, surely nobody on here would be flying BA to TLL for 40 when you can go through Hel for 80 + 20, Hee Hee Hee

    • Grahame says:

Tallin refused me (I am BA silver)

  • Jovanna says:

I am surprised by some of these. BA charge a premium on some of these routes – over and above the LCCs and way more for CE.

  • Leo says:

Mykonos is JMK. I didn’t know there was any kind of lounge there – is it new? It’s an expensive CE fare for what is a very basic airport.

    • Gin and Tonic Please says:

The lounge at JMK was new this year. It’s in the domestic terminal (5 min walk from international) and it takes Priority Pass. It’s VERY small, but very good – food from Nammos beach club, decent drinks and lots of power sockets. Much nicer than the rest of the airport – though allegedly that’s being refurbished over the winter. (I’m not holding my breath – they’ve promised that for 3 years now…)

  • Xmenlongshot says:

The BA check-in staff at Innsbruck mentioned back in Jan that a lounge for customers was being built. Not sure whether this has progressed at all

    • IanMacK says:

I hope its soon ! Family ski trip in Feb 18 is in and out of Innsbruck (due to shorter train journey than from Zur)
