Bits: Virgin redemptions with infants, Qatar increasing Scandi frequencies, Amex and Ryanair

News in brief:

Virgin Atlantic has still not changed its infant policy, one year on

When the Virgin Atlantic website was relaunched last December, it changed its policy on the pricing of infants on Virgin Flying Club redemptions.

Redemption tickets for infants had historically been charged at 200 miles (Economy), 750 miles (Premium Economy) or 1500 miles (Upper Class) plus taxes and charges.

From last December, they were charged at 10% of the lowest cash fare, plus taxes and charges.

This appears to have been forced on Virgin by the limitations of the new booking software, which they inherited from 49% shareholder Delta.  The new policy is identical to the Delta policy.

The problem is that 10% of the lowest cash fare can be a LOT of money.  This is especially true on one way bookings where no discounted tickets are available.  A one-way Upper Class flight to New York on 1st February will cost you £5,897.  This means that Virgin will ask you for £589, plus taxes and charges, for your infant redemption ticket.

Virgin Flying Club told me a year ago that they were fully aware of this problem and that a fix would be in place in H1 2017.  It is now December, and a recent email from a reader confirms that nothing has changed.  Whether you book a cash ticket or a redemption ticket on Virgin Atlantic, a lap infant will still cost you 10% of the cheapest cash fare at the time of booking.

British Airways, for comparison, will charge 10% of the adult Avios and 10% of the adult taxes for a lap infant.  This is more like it.

Qatar Airways increasing frequencies to Scandinavia

Qatar Airways has been offering some truly exceptional deals out of Scandinavia this year, such as the recent £1300 business class fares to Australasia.

They have proved so popular that the airline is increasing its frequencies.  Oslo will increase from seven to 10 flights to Doha per week whilst Stockholm will increase from 14 to 17 per week.

17 long haul aircraft a week out of Stockholm is a lot of premium seats to fill, so hopefully the flow of good value business class deals will continue.

Do American Express customers fly Ryanair?

Whilst this is not ‘news’ in any sense of the word, I found it amusing.  A reader sent me an email he had received from American Express encouraging him to sign up for new cashback offers.

Whilst 12,000 people had chosen to register for the ‘£20 back on a £60 Eurostar spend’ deal, only a paltry 311 had signed up for the offer of ‘2000 bonus Membership Rewards points when spending £80 on Ryanair’.  There isn’t even any guarantee that those 311 people were eventually going to fly to Ryanair – many will have saved the offer ‘just in case’.

Of course I fly Ryanair when it makes sense to do so, I’m sure most of us do / would. Where their use of “off piste” airports givies abdirect flight to somewhere I need to be, why would I spend best part of a day taking a 2 sector long way round route using mainline carriers, when Ryan can do it direct in a couple of hours.

Doesn’t mean I enjoy the experience, but a saving of 6 hours or so each way, on one of my regular work trips more than offsets the cattle truck experience. I’d be daft not to.

  • Lee says:

Perhaps the Ryanair offer is due to the cards it is on, or not on. I’ve never seen it on our platinum or BAPP cards.

  • PalCsaky says:

£80 is a lot of money for a ryanair ticket.

    • Frenske says:

Not if uou pay the credit card fee. 🙂

    • Anna says:

      Not during a school holiday!

    • Alan says:

Almost one hold bag? 😉 (that’s always where the cost seems to soar and why for connections to DUB is another reason why I’ve always ended up using Aer Lingus instead)

  • Ian says:

I fly Ryanair sometimes. Would definitely sign up for that offer but no sign of it on my Platinum card

  • Scallder says:

The 10% rule is rather annoying. Booked to go to New Zealand with Singapore with our little one in July in business on miles and whilst the taxes for the return flight from Heathrow was around £240 each for my wife and I, the cost of adding an infant was £520.

  • Yuff says:

I’ve flown Ryanair, Norwegian and BA CE short haul over the last month and Ryanair is by far the worst out of the 3 on pretty much every point apart from they were more convenient.
However not sure the convenience factor outweighs the negative points of flying Ryanair.
The most irritating fact was our £4.99 HBO flights from Stansted, whilst not Ryanair’s fault, security decided that tennis rackets were dangerous items and weren’t allowed in the cabin. Heathrow, Palma and Birmingham don’t seem to find racquets quite as dangerous, as I’m sure many other airports don’t either. So I had to go back out of security, buy a bag, check it in and get through security again. Anyone who has flown from Stansted recently would know that’s a tall order in 70
mins. Made the flight with 5 mins to spare 🙂
On arrival we shared a car with someone, whose bag had been lost, due to a tight connection in Munich airport on a flight from Austria. His racquets were allowed on both flights!!!!!!

cheap one way to position for a long-haul trip = Ryanair

  • s879 says:

OT: My IHG Platinum was due to expire December 2017. Signed up to Ambassador with 32k points (thanks Rob) and was expecting status to expire December 2018 (on Ambassador expiry) but on the website it is showing Platinum Ambassador expiry as December 2019. Is that right or will it change to December 2018 if I don’t renew Ambassador next year? Just thought that if it will remain till 2019, that’s another value point in holding Ambassador as it has given me a two year extension. Very useful re Hilton Diamond match too.

    • Rob says:

There are reports that signing up to Ambassador erronerously resets your IHG status for another year – looks like this happened to you.

      • Love2Travel says:

I think it has reset mine to 2 years. It was expiring next month, now showing 2019.
