News in brief:

British Airways lounge guesting rules relaxed over Christmas

Whilst there has been no official announcement, British Airways seems to have relaxed its Gatwick and Heathrow lounge access policy for Gold members.

Until 13th January it appears that:

a Gold card holder can take up to FIVE guests into Galleries Club (not Galleries First) as long as all passengers are on the same ticket

a Gold Guest List member can take up to FIVE guests into Galleries First as long as all passengers are on the same ticket

You can find out more in this Flyertalk thread with post 24 being the key.

AirPortr bag check-in now available for AA flights

AirPortr, the luggage collection and delivery service, has expanded its unique ‘door to destination’ baggage check-in service.

Until now you were only able to use the full ‘door to destination’ service – which includes checking in your bags for you – when flying with British Airways.  You can now also use the service when flying American Airlines from Heathrow.

You can travel without seeing your luggage all the way to your final destination.   Your luggage will be picked up, tagged and checked in for you.  When you arrive at the airport you can head straight to security.  This service can be used for pick ups from your front door, hotel lobby or office. I tried AirPortr early this year and my review of AirPortr’s pick up service is here.

AirPortr check-in can be booked on this page of the AirPortr website. Prices start from £30 for the first bag and £10 for each additional bag within Central London.

To promote the new new American Airlines partnership, AirPortr is currently offering £10 off by using the code AAUPANDAWAY.

PartnerPlusBenefit

Save 40% on PartnerPlusBenefit redemptions

PartnerPlusBenefit is the small business scheme for the UK and Ireland run by 11 of the Star Alliance airlines.  This includes Lufthansa and Swiss.

We wrote about PPB in detail in this article.  It is a LOT more flexible than the British Airways On Business scheme which we reviewed here – although you’d be daft not to join On Business too if you have a VAT registered UK business.  Click here to sign up – you’ll receive 1,500 BenefitPoints just for joining.

Until 31st December, PPB is offering 40% off all flight redemptions and upgrades.  A return flight from the UK to Germany is just 2,100 points, reduced from 3,500 points, for example.  The discount applies to flights on all PartnerPlusBenefit partner airlines.  Full details of this offer are in your PPB account online.

Probably the first good thing BA has done in a while!

  • Matt says:

Sorry for OT: I have the Amex Gold and accompanying Amex Gold Credit, which now has a MR balance of 6,000 or so. Does this remain separate from my main MR balance or can it be merged?

  • Richard says:

OT: Lufthansa miles&more will become revenue based – four miles per euro spent .. how long before BA follow I wonder since AF/KLM are also changing.

    • Ben Chod says:

BA said they would consider revenue based earning for points in 2018 iirc.

      • Rob says:

And I discussed it with Cruz on our tube trip. I told me that the current structure (0.25 miles per mile flown on cheap Y etc) got you 80% of the way there anyway. He disagreed.

  • Oli says:

A good alternative to AirPortr is https://www.sendmybag.com which for the same price as AirPortr within Europe (£30 to most European countries) is fully door to door. They will pick up your luggage at home and deliver it 3 days later to your destination. Having used both AirPortr and SendMyBag, I prefer the later as you don’t have to pick up your luggage at the destination airport, and don’t have to pay for checked luggage

    • John says:

+1 brilliant for anyone with student offspring coming/going as well (and there’s a student discount).

      Excellent small business.

    • Tom says:

I can see the comparison in certain circumstances- but seems unlikely for holiday?

Don’t get your clothes until 3 days in to holiday? Same for toiletries?

Then still need to pay checked in luggage for return flight.

      • Peter K says:

Surely you’d send your clothes 3 days before you leave?

        • Tom says:

Would you mind telling my wife that she has to go without her hair straighteners for three days ?!

    • Fastbowler says:

+2 for Sendmybag-. It always works really well

  • Paul says:

Any shift by BA on their anti family policies is to be welcomed however consider this.
GGL with 2500 tier points can take 5 into first lounge non of who have status.
I, with GC and 1500 tier points can only take my family of 3 into Club lounge. However my 3 have 3400 tier points and despite a family tier total of almost 5000 I get nothing more than I get now.
Meanwhile GC with 1500 tier points get 5 into club lounge none of who have status.
For this passenger there is nothing but downside here and BA have again managed to snatch defeat from jaws of victory.

          Harry

We are missing you here at the party.. all the gang send hello..Genghis myself and all the crew! Next year its a date!!

        • the real harry1 says:

sending you a chilled bucket of Taittinger Comtes Blanc de Blancs 2006 Vintage Champagne 🙂

        • Genghis says:

You missed a good night TRH1. Next year in Cornwall. If you supply the Taittinger Blanc de Blancs I’ll supply my heavily discounted Baron Rothschild Blanc de Blancs (or my cheap Majestic Calais special, depending how generous I’m feeling) 🙂

        • Polly says:

          Hey G
That sounds awesome….great bargains to be had in ould Calais. You are a generous soul! Really nice evening…just made my last train..

        • the real harry1 says:

OK it’s on – moi, Genghis & Polly commit 2018 to meeting up in a Cornwall pub & smuggling in some decent Champers, maybe for later, moving on to my place later much to my wife’s delight

    • Will says:

Slight correction as GGL is 3000, and only if reaualifying, otherwise 5000.

  • N says:

OT – Did my first mattress run yesterday. Felt very naughty. Had a shower, ruffled the bed and left. Success!

    • John says:

      No breakfast?

      • N says:

I woke up this morning in my own bed on the other side of London!

        • Genghis says:

How do the numbers work out for your mattress run?

        • N says:

£60 night at the Moxy Excel for a Marriott Plat challenge.

If everything works out, I’ll be finishing the challenge in late Feb which (I have in writing from Marriott) will give me Plat till Feb 2020.

        • Genghis says:

How many nights? Ie. Total cost is what?

        • N says:

The challenge is 9 stays in 3 months. Although in practise they round up, so if you started today you’d have until end of March 2018.

          I have 6 stays booked that I need anyway (inc 2 weeks bouncing around South Africa in Jan/Feb), with 3 runs needed;
          1x Moxy Excel (£60)
1x AC Hotel La Linea (44EUR)
1x AC Hotel La Linea (44EUR)

Assuming all works (there may be a hole in my plans – I haven’t spotted yet), a smidge under £140 for 2 years of SPG/Marriott Plat.

        • N says:

+ current MegaBonus offer means a free Cat 1-5 night + a load of extra points
+ Moxy Excel seems to have been on Shop Small

          !!

    • Scott says:

Got a couple coming up next week – 2 stays at HIX, total cost £63, along with getting the IHG credit card will get me almost 50k points via Q4’s Accelerate – should be enough for one night somewhere decent or two nights at a middle of the road place.

      • Michael Jennings says:

Which HiX are you doing this at?

        • Scott says:

Glasgow Airport and Hamilton. Booked around 6 weeks back, for the days just before Xmas, which were the lowest rates. M74 Strathclyde Park, and a bit further afield, Stirling, were in the same price range.

    • Waribai says:

Keep a careful eye on the AC points and nights posting to your profile correctly. Anything more than a 48 hour delay after checkout, assume that they have not tracked correctly and as soon as the system lets you (another 8 days) submit the missing stay form . From that point, it often takes a good month before they add them to your record which is a pain if you have a tight deadline for turning plat.

  • Geoff says:

OT re Gold Amex churning / referrals: Can I refer the same person twice and we both get all the bonuses? i.e. I refer my OH. I get the 9k MRs, she gets the 22k MRs. She cancels, waits 6 months and then we do it all again. Will the the 9k and 22k apply the second time round? Many thanks.

  • Polly says:

Once one of you always holds the card you can refer back and forth as many times as you like. But we do recommend not doing it so frequently, perhaps waiting for the 8th month after cancelling to be re referred back. So yes in one year, you can definitely achieve your goal. Just keep the cycle going forward.
If you really wanted to up the avios, you could have the BAPP on the go too, so you are getting 26k avios for a bonus spend plus 9k for referral. Depends if you are chasing MRs to avios or just MRs.
