Emirates launches Stansted flights with its amazing new First Class suite

Emirates announced yesterday that it will begin services from London Stansted to Dubai on 8th July.  This will be the 10th daily Emirates flight from London to Dubai, with the airline already operating from Heathrow and Gatwick.

The real stunner is that Emirates is allocating one of its new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft to the route.  This is a little illogical since the ‘ER’ bit in 300ER stands for ‘Extended Range’ and London to Dubai is hardly a stretch!

However, this means that the service will feature the brand new Emirates First Class private cabins.  You can check this out on the Emirates website here (warning: website features Jeremy Clarkson) and in this Head for Points article here.

It will also have the updated Business Class product, although this is a bit of a stinker given that it is a 2-3-2 layout with the unwelcome middle seat – see the picture below.

The service is aimed at the tech and pharma companies around Cambridge and Peterborough, such as Glaxo and Astra Zeneca.  Stansted is also a major cargo hub.

The flight times are not ideal if you are flying to Dubai, unless you are happy with a very short sleep before bounding into a meeting. The outbound leaves Stansted at 21.10, arriving into Dubai at 07.05.  The return is more civilised, leaving Dubai at 09.30 and arriving at Stansted at 14.10.

I might give this a go next year on the return leg of a family trip.  I am guessing that reward availability will be decent, except in the First Class Suites which are currently blocked for redemptions.

Two pairs of Business Class seats, one behind the other, are not a bad option if you have two children.  This is also worth a look if you have one child, since the 3-across middle block would suit you nicely.

How to earn Emirates Skywards miles from UK credit cards (March 2024)

Emirates Skywards does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Emirates Skywards miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards.

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Emirates Skywards miles which is an attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Emirates Skywards mile. The Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it.

The new Stansted Express trains being introduced in 2019 will have no first class.

    • Lady London says:

Stansted Express trains don’t have anything that can reasonably be called First Class now!

And that’s even if you DO end up being given the actual proper Stansted trains. The last time I paid the outrageous ticket price to Stansted, the train they gave us was at least 35 years old with beaten up seats, damaged cushions, suspicious stains on many of the seats and was impossible to move in even with just hand luggage. I know that’s often the usual standard for London commuters. But at ticket price of £25 for a one way ticket on the second most expensive train line in Europe? They’re having a laugh…

On the flipside crossrail trains to Heathrow look good!

  • Talay says:

So just how much room (or the lack of it) do you have in the new 7 abreast business class compared to the cheaper Etihad 1-2-1 offering ?

  • Jake says:

does anyone know of new and cheap (promo) routes from Emirates in 2018?

OT: Here’s another thing you couldn’t make up. After 13mths Lloyds fixed my account and our pts finally transferred automatically on Tuesday? Today I receive a letter from Head of Portfolio Management (not my Complaints Manager) telling me that they have been unable to fix my account in the 26 wk period as promised and that it will now be by the end April 2018 – and here is a cheque for £150 with our apologies! Lloyds – the bank that keeps on giving….

    • mark2 says:

      It certainly does!
my wife received the same letter and cheque but, fortunately, the points still have not appeared.

    • Liz says:

Courtesy of Lloyds compensation and extra upgrade voucher we have just booked a wee extra trip next year to Tallin and Helsinki in Sept!

      • Anna says:

I’ve been told end of January, so 9 months after initially reporting the problem. Hoping for the same outcome you got!

      • Polly says:

Wow, you, licky lot, ours have posted on time every month.. What a shame…outr daughter ism,ice you two tho, so lucky her..

Liz, did you ever get to London for your hotel and dinner, the night of party..some of us were there earlier…meant to ask sooner..hope you celebrated in style somewhere!

  • Anthony Burns says:

I travel through Stansted Airport a lot. To me it is a dreadfully stressful place to travel through and just wonder how those first class passengers will find the main departure area rubbing shoulders with Ryanair’s budget travellers.
To me a real odd decision since everything about Stansted is budget travel with even Ryanair unhappy with the facilities.

If you live in Bishop’s Stortford, it’s probably still worth it.

  • Mr Flump says:

OT – I am 15000 points short of qualifying for Spire. Would a Virgin to IHG transfer make it through by 31st December with all the bank holidays in between?

    • Rob says:

Usually takes 7-10 days so risky but possible. Left it a bit late to be honest ….

    • Andrew says:

I did 2 transfers at the beginning of the month. They both arrived 5 days later and that was with a weekend inbetween

  • Anthony Burns says:

Had a good surprise when I qualified as got a bonus of 25,000 points.
All thanks to an earlier article by Rob highlighting the year end deadlines.

    OT Amex Platinum Travel offer

Spend £600 at AMEX Travel and get £200 back on my AMEX Platinum card. Sounds good, now to think what and where to book!

    • Jake says:

Will they offer it to new PLATINUM customers?

      • Rob says:

It takes a while for offers to appear on a new card but – in my recent experience – a few default ones appear on Day 1 and this may well be included.
