Novotel opens a funky new hotel at Heathrow

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

After a stay at the Pullman London St Pancras last week which was so depressing that we can’t even bring ourselves to review it, it is good to see that Accor has not completely lost its way.

The Novotel London Heathrow Airport T1 T2 and T3 Hotel (catchy name …..) opened at the end of February.  It is a £30m conversion of the former HQ of the British Airports Authority on Bath Road and has 166 rooms.

There are plans to extend this to 274 rooms, although as the hotel presumably faces demolition for the third runway I wouldn’t put money on that seeing the light of day.

As you can see from the pictures, this is not the dull Novotel style you may have been used to.   Novotel is part of Accor and stays will earn points, convertible to Avios if you wish, in Le Club AccorHotels.

The hotel website is here if you want to find out more.

OT applied for the Amex Gold to Platinum upgrade yesterday and selected ‘No’ to adding a Supplementary cardholder during the application but today my partner checked her online account and can see an Amex Platinum Supplementary card. So Amex must have set it up for some reasons. She was previously a supp cardholder on the Gold card but I cancelled it to add her after the upgrade to get the 5000 points bonus. I guess I won’t get the bonus points as it set her up during the application?

    • Solo says:

Amex messed up on our Gold to Platinum upgraded. We wanted to add additional card holder but in fact they sent two for the same person and charged £140 for a supplementary card. Turns out that if anyone is/has been a supp card holder they automatically get a supp card. Quite frustrating

    • Phil says:

+1 on that. Exactly the same.

    • Funtime says:

I had exactly the same. Online chat denied that I’d cancelled the gold supplementary card beforehand.

Told them I’d got a letter from them confirming the cancellation. Still denied it, so they asked that I scan and upload the letter back to them and then they would respond.

They then sent a letter asking why I sent them the cancellation letter to them!

I’ve given up. The 20000 mr upgrade points haven’t triggered although I did get 18000 for a referral.

    • John says:

I had exactly same experience but by the time I questioned it they had already cancelled the additional plat card holders account.

Now im thinking of reinstating it or might just add someone else to avoid any issues with the 5k potential bonus.

Also is the 5k bonus for all supps or just the first?

      • AndyR says:

I thought first only but might be wrong. You can only have 1 Platinum supp for free, each additional costs £170. Or were you thinking about Gold / Green supps?

  • xcalx says:

One for Anika here am I been affered 36 euros for my points

I think I have just accepted 36 euros for the points. Now for the 2 year wait.

      • Rob says:

My best guess (and this really needs Anika who is in Jo’burg as this is beyond my rudimentary German, a level so basic my 6-year old has now surpassed me) is that you have made a claim for €36 via the insolvency proceedings. If they pay out 5c on the Euro when the assets are sold then you will get €2!

        • Mark says:

Not much point claiming for 300 miles then, despite the repeated emails from them encouraging me to do so!

        • HAM76 says:

correct, albeit I would be surprised if we get anthing at all. If there are any assets left, most money will go to the lawyer who is in charge of this case. Among the factors that determines his salary is the number of claims, which explains the persistence in communication and the rather efficient way to file a claim.

        • xcalx says:

Thanks Rob not much point in claiming for my other accounts then ( the refer a friend promo to family accounts = 10000. Oh well easy come easy go.

  • Alex says:

On Le Club AccorHotels, in the past we were made Platinum with the Amex Plat (it was pulled 2-3 years ago), and whilst I’m very far off the mark of reaching any kind of status with them (2 stays, 4 nights), I received a gold card this year, which puzzled me. Are they “soft landing” me, or will I keep gold just because I stay once in a while?

    • Bob says:

No it is just their soft landing procedure.

it happened to me also in the past althoug I did not even completed one single night/stay.

    • Mark says:

I had this as well about a month ago…although to be fair I got Accor Plat in Feb 2016 from holding an Amex Plat for about a month to get the sign up bonus before cancelling so can’t really complain! Gold not that great tbh and just upgraded Gold to Plat again so will be using Hilton and Marriott Gold for the free breakfast for the foreseeable future

  • Sam says:

We make more frequent, lower value international payments using Amex & another payment provider. I’d love to put them all through Amex for the membership points, but find them poor value, so they do not receive that much business. Typically things tighten after I request a rate review, then slowly downward spiral. Ensure that you’re constantly checking rates with them, otherwise you could be paying over the odds.

    • Ian says:

      Hi Sam,
I work in the International Payments team at American Express and it’s important for us take feedback like this on and we’re keen to speak with you to find out how we can win all the business and provide an outstanding service to you without the need to consistently check price. We want to be your provider of choice and one that is trusted with the intent to work together for many years to come.

Please do get in touch on Ian.P.Hargreaves1@aexp.com

      All the best
      Ian

      • Sam says:

Thanks Ian, will do, it’s being looked into.

And to be fair, there is never any issue with Customer Service at AMEX, consistently excellent in all parts of the business we use, so I know you’ll take it seriously.

Looking for some advice , i have a few more thousand to spend on my BAPP to bank a 2 for 1 before i cancel , my plan is to get a Platinum card for an upcoming holiday at the start of june to make use of the priority pass .
My question is , if i apply for and get the platinum card in say middle of May , can i not ‘activate’ the card , so i don’t start the clock on the ‘spend 2000 in 3 months’ on the platinum ? is that how it works . Could i keep it in a draw for a few weeks but make use of the priority passes ??

    • Peter K says:

The 3 months seem to start from when issued, so just before you receive the card, in my experience.

      • Scottydoggiom says:

Thanks , i did think that might be the case , might mean i have 2 card on the go at the same time trying to hit spend limits !

        • Scallder says:

Might be worth looking at Billhop for any invoices you have Scottygodiom. You can get £250 of fee free spending by being referred (my referral is here: https://secure.billhop.com/r/8f256 – believe Rob has said in the past ok to share these).

2.95% charge on payments otherwise but might be worth it to make sure you hit the bonuses. Always have the buying gift cards route to bring forward spend too…

        • xcalx says:

          @scallder
Just used you referral link to pay new amex card £250 quick and easy. Thanks

can anyone tell me please how to send a support query in the Curve app?

    • Genghis says:

Open Curve app. Click on “Support” at bottom RHS. Just above the bottom bar in faded text there’s “My support tickets”. Click that. Click “New” at top RHS. Type your message then send.

      • mark2 says:

Thanks Genghis. My phone was similar to that, but the whole thing is v. klunky. Glad I am only using it for one specific purpose .

  • Peter K says:

How do you apply for this? I have a look on the NUS website and through google but I’m drawing a blank… Thanks in advance.

    • Alex says:

You apply on the website – I get a pretty in-your-face button to join when I go on the main page. Then enter your email address and away you go.

Also good point on the co-op discount! My local convenience store has just become more appealing

      • Peter K says:

Ah, okay. I thought I had to enter my representative body first and couldn’t see how to do that. Thank you.

  • Lucinda says:

    O\T-Well nearly

    AMEX companion Credit cards.

Is it possible to have BOTH the Gold and PLAT ones?

Going through a churning cycle and have Gold credit card.
Will close the Gold Charge card.
OH will then recommend me for the PLAT Charge card
I will then apply for PLAT credit card.

    Thanks

    • mark2 says:

I recommend that you cancel the gold credit and upgrade to Platinum then apply for plat companion credit.
If you cancel the gold you will have to wait six months to get sign up bonus.

      • Lucinda says:

My OH will refer me for the PLAT so he gets 18,000 and I get 35,000

        He then closes his PLAT

If I upgrade I alone only get 20K

So can I have a Gold credit card AND a Platinum one?

        Cheers.

        • mark2 says:

If you have had a gold card less than six months ago (you say that you will have just cancelled) you will not get the 35,000.

        • mark2 says:

If you have had any card giving MR points.
