InterContinental mulling positive changes to the Ambassador loyalty scheme

By coincidence I had an article lined up for this week on how Ambassador works, but I will push it back a few days so as not to confuse it with this one.

If you want to read a general overview of the InterContinental Ambassador PAID loyalty programme, it will appear over the weekend and you can find out more on the IHG website here.

A reader who is a member of the invite-only IHG Rewards Club Advisors panel sent me a questionnaire he received on potential changes to the Ambassador membership package.

It looks pretty good to me and would address the main weakness of the current package which is the lack of breakfast and lounge benefits.

Some hotels, frankly, have been having a laugh at the expense of Ambassador members over upgrades.

When I was at InterContinental Abu Dhabi, for example, my ‘guaranteed’ upgrade got me a Club Floor room but I was banned from using the lounge.  This meant that my upgrade benefit didn’t seem to get me anything more than a robe in the bathroom.

The first thing current members will spot is that membership would (and I stress this is only a proposal) go up to $250 – from $200 – for the first year, and presumably $200 – from $150 – to renew. However, the benefits are much improved:

free breakfast for one person per night (Le Grand in Paris is currently €45 I think, if you’re looking for a comparison, and the Amstel in Amsterdam is similar)

$20 food and beverage credit (presumably per stay although it isn’t clear)

annual free night certificate (the word ‘weekend’ has been removed, which implies it could be valid seven days although that feels unlikely from a commercial perspective)

Platinum Elite status in IHG Rewards Club (a welcome change from the current paltry free Gold Elite status)

There are two strong new benefits when you hit a “membership milestone” – although it isn’t at all clear what the “milestone” would be (number of nights?, a certain level of spend?, number of years of membership?):

annual pass to a Club InterContinental lounge (not clear if it would be for your full stay or just one night)

annual suite upgrade voucher for use during a paid stay

The two key existing benefits:

a guaranteed one category upgrade

4pm check-out

…. would remain.  The ‘free pay TV movie’ benefit would disappear but that is rarely used these days I imagine.

If InterContinental went ahead with this – and it is only a proposal – then I think it would represent a real improvement, although I am already a big fan of the Ambassador package as it stands.

Free breakfast for one instead of two is not ideal but I get a feeling that IHG will sell this to the hotels on the basis that it will encourage couples on leisure trips to pay for one breakfast whilst at the moment they are eating outside.

In a couple of days I’ll run a general overview of the current Ambassador package and why I like it.  You can learn more on the Ambassador section of the IHG website.

It would be a change for the worse as far as I am concerned. I always stay at ICs with my wife and pay for lounge access, so the free breakfast for one would be meaningless, as would the $20 food and beverage credit. We also usually make use of the free movie.

  • David Coldridge says:

Paying for lounge club benefits with IHG works out better than the suggested changes outlined in the survey. Afternoon tea, access to the lounge for drinks etc and free breakfast. They should revert back to the way Ambassador members were treated up to the last change, in that where you paid and were upgraded to a room one category(or more)above the paid rate, you got free lounge access if that room category included lounge access. That benefit quietly disappeared!

    • John says:

Quietly? It was never an official benefit and then it became explicitly not a benefit.

    • Leo says:

Hmmm not sure I would say quietly – there was a pretty big overhaul of Ambassador in October 2016 if I remember correctly.

  • Genghis says:

I also struggled to use the weekend voucher this year but that was all down to travel schedule and most places being better value paying points. Used it though getting decent “value”. The thing for me though was the 10% rebate on all IHG stays option. Did v well out of it. I need to renew at month end but waiting to see if it’s an Accelerate target.

    • CV3V says:

Once some of the new ICs ‘open’ in the UK (e.g. Edinburgh) i am expecting it will be a lot easier to find opportunities to use the free night voucher. Since joining Ambassador i have used one, let one expire, and planning a trip which in part could be determined by whether or not i can get value out of my current voucher – which is tricky when i i have Hilton Gold status.

      • Leo says:

I was hoping for more than just one IC out of the raft of Principals etc. partly for this reason. At least the free IHG night can be used at a Kimpton.

    • The Original Nick says:

The new Accelerate promotion is surely due. I’m waiting for it too.

OT – sorry, no “bits” article today – has anyone done a self-referral for an Amex card in the last few days and can confirm it’s still working? Thanks

    • tds says:

Worked for me late last week, Plat to Nectar. The card hasn’t arrived yet, but have the usual acceptance emails.

      • BJ says:

+1, Plat to BAPP worked for me last week, 18k MR arrived day after card. This morning I took a supp on the BAPP following report from Genghis that he got 3000 avios for that two weeks ago, happy to report it’s still working today 🙂

  • KevMc says:

The first weekend voucher they sent was lost in the post, so a second replacement one was sent to me. I have used the replacement one, but the first one has since arrived.

Does anybody have any idea if this first one is likely to be honoured/valid, or will it have been cancelled? Why they can’t have a digital voucher in this day and age is beyond me…

    • Rob says:

Won’t be cancelled but with the name on it they are presumably now tracked.

  • Alan says:

Agree this would be a good change, the pay film selection can be pretty woeful and breakfast would be a far better benefit! The $20 F&B would also offset the cost if a 2nd breakkie was being bought…

    • John says:

Good point, I should have thought of that, brings down the €45 figure mentioned to €30-35 ish for 2 people which is more palatable!

Would be doing lots of one night stays then (unless they decide to make it per night)

  • Rob says:

I did see that but 2 readers sent it to me yesterday – when you’re on 25k daily visitors very little gets past us!

  • Stephen says:

    OT:
I’ve been keeping an eye on some CE flights for the last couple of weeks, trying to book a last minute holiday for the last week in August. As you can imagine, very slim pickings, especially for the return leg.

Then last night, looking at Venice, it seems like a lot of extra seats have been loaded – instead of virtually no (return) availability for the next few months, it was almost a see of blue for the entire year on BARedemptionFinder, including August.

I don’t know if this applies to other destinations, but might be worth checking again if you’ve been struggling to find seats.
