Slight O/T: Planning upgrade from Amex Gold to Plat for first time since starting this hobby after receive 1 year Gold bonus, however I can’t understand how to do the upgrade. Can’t see any link when log into amex account online or in app.
Reading other comments it seems to be very simple so I’m assuming this is me being dense.

      • GRIMZ says:

Do you still get that bonus now that you are going from CC to charge card?

        • Alex G says:

no, you have to have a Gold Charge card before they changed the credit card.

      • Sam says:

        Perfect, Cheers.

      • Bob says:

Newbie: Also planning similar upgrade to Plat from Gold, once you upgrade, Gold card is cancelled I assume, and is the £450 charged straight away?

Once you get the Plat bonus can cancel card for pro rata refund – Is bonus quick at posting if hit within a month or two?

Also do card benefits such as priority pass last the card year if the plat is cancelled early or get cancelled along with the card?

        Thanks

        • Rob says:

You can only upgrade Gold Charge. If you have the new Gold Credit you’re stuffed.

PPass is cancelled immediately, hotel cards live on for the year.

    • CV3V says:

Note that it needs to be the Gold charge card, you cannot upgrade the Gold credit card to Plat charge card.

  • Optimus Prime says:

OT – Last month there was a reader interested in a points reservation at Palazzo in Vegas for 2019.

So am I and I got in touch with IHG to enquire about availability in early 2019. ‘ve just got confirmation from IHG there’s none before May.

    • CV3V says:

I was discussing it recently, but it wasn’t using IHG points, but using the Iberia avios. My IHG points are then being used for an IC in SFO!

  • tical says:

O/T – there was a AmEx spend £400 get £100 off at Melia hotels but that only had a handful of hotels participating. Has anyone had any luck getting the offer to work at other Melia hotels?

    • John says:

No, I had other Melia stays booked in so figured it was worth a shot. spent 500 at a non-listed hotel but recieved nothing.

    • Kai says:

A friend booked ME London and called and was offered the £100 credit..

  • Matt says:

OT: has there been any more news/rumours about the possible Curve changes – raised limits, paid version and Amex link?

    • Genghis says:

Apart from the recent survey that has been going around with questions about additional benefits, Amex acceptance and willingness to pay. Nothing in there on raised limits for me though.

    • john says:

Would Amex T&C’s allow it? I remember reading something about some card T&C’s now not allowing Curve type things but can’t remember who that was.

      • Graham Walsh says:

One way they are looking at is that you Top up your Curve card from Amex and then spend on your Curve card as normal, eating away at your Amex “balance”.

  • David says:

At the moment for unlimited lounge access I choose between paying PP directly £259, or Amex £450. I don’t think I’d get £191 worth of value from the other Amex Platinum benefits so I go with PP directly.
If whatever has caused the guest visit price to rise by a third also in the near future causes the membership price to rise by a third to £345, then I think that’d tip the balance.

    • CV3V says:

The Amex PP isnt offered on the PP website. With the Amex PP you can get 2 cards, and each card allows free entry for an additional visitor. So the Amex PP allows for 2 people to get unlimited entry, as well as bringing in 2 guests for free. Add on Amex Plat travel insurance, and Gold status with Hilton (free breakfast) and it can become good value.

      • David says:

Yeah, I was counting the 2nd card, and 2nd free visitor per card as part of the “value from the other Amex Platinum benefits”. Over the last two and a bit years I’ve been a PP member, the value I’d have got from these would’ve been £0 – though I can see that as our almost 2 year old gets older and family holidays by plane become more feasible, the value could be significant.

As for the rest of the benefits, I could definitely see it being worth £105 whereas it’s harder for me to see it being worth £191.

      • Funtime says:

It’s good value if you can get in with it!

Last Sunday Gatwick south, no good so grain store.

Now at Seattle, turned away at Alaska and redirected to centurion Amex.

See what the rest of the trip brings.

        • Mark2 says:

From my experience being redirected to Seattle centurion Amex was a definite win.

        • Funtime says:

Now at Anchorage and the Alaska lounge is not accepting Priority Pass due to capacity issues.

Not much luck or is this normal?

    • Graham Walsh says:

Don’t forget Plaza Premium lounge access. T5 costs £40 per person. Show your Amex and it admits 2 people. I’ve definitely got most of my value from using the PP lounge.

      • Alan says:

Agree, it’s a decent lounge – much less mobbed than Galleries Club North above it!

  • ambient says:

Sort of O/T but also related:
Does anyone know if, as a personal holder of an Amex Gold card, if I apply on behalf of my business for an Amex Platinum Business (with the account in the company name) whether it will qualify for the 40k MR sign-up bonus, or whether I need to close down my personal card and wait six months first? Thanks!

    • Mzungu says:

I can only offer my experience, which was a while ago. I did this is reverse – I had the Plat Business Card (got the sign up bonus) and a couple of years later, thanks to HfP, applied for the PRGC, and received bonus on that too. I changed the PRGC to the PRGCC and received the new card benefits again shortly after the PRGC was closed to new applicants.

I know that Rob has said on here several times that you can only have one MR account, including business, but I did ask Amex on one occasion, and I was told that they are treated separately. I still have both at the moment (well I downgraded the business card to gold a couple of years ago). I guess the test will be when I churn the PRGCC.

So, that may not be much help – maybe worth asking Amex on the phone as I did – at least you’d have a reference.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Don’t think rob says you can only have one he just says you can only have the bonus if you haven’t held an MR card for 6 months. Ofcourse that doesn’t mean IT errors don’t happen and you get lucky.

Can’t see why you can’t have the Plat and the Gold Credit Card at the same time for example

  • Lumma says:

The £127 10 visit Priority Pass, can the 10 visits be used for guests or is it 10 visits for the cardholder and you have to pay for guests from the start?

    • Pangolin says:

The standard one (not via Amex Plat) does not allow +1 so cardholder only.

  • paulm says:

Quick question on Gold Charge to Platinum upgrade if anyone can help. If I have offers saved to my Gold card (such as the Hilton one), if I upgrade will they still be saved to my account or do I loose them ?

    • Octopus says:

When I downgraded from BAPP to the free blue card the offers transferred across after a few days.

    • KevMc says:

They will still be saved…although you may see them disappear from the website and app for a day or two whilst they change the associated card number
