What ACTUALLY happens to your Marriott Travel Package following the SPG merger

As I write this, the new Marriott and Starwood websites are still unavailable as the huge task of combining the two databases continues.  If we’re lucky it will be up and running when you read this, but then think of TSB ….

At 7.15pm last night, Marriott Rewards finally disclosed via a Flyertalk post what will happen to Travel Packages which have been bought but not redeemed.

They will be mapped across like this.

For bookings made before January:

  • Cat 1-5 can book a new Cat 1-4
  • Cat 6 can book a new Cat 1-4
  • Cat 7 can book a new Cat 5
  • Cat 8 can book a new Cat 5
  • Cat 9 can book a new Cat 6
  • Tier 1-3 can book a new Cat 6
  • Tier 4-5 can book a new Cat 7

For bookings made after peak and off-peak pricing is launched in January, this is how I interpret the Flyertalk post (but it can be read other ways, see the comments below):

  • Cat 1-5 can book anything up to 30,000 points
  • Cat 6 can book anything up to 30,000 points
  • Cat 7 can book anything up to 40,000 points
  • Cat 8 can book anything up to 40,000 points
  • Cat 9 can book anything up to 60,000 points
  • Tier 1-3 can book anything up to 60,000 points
  • Tier 4-5 can book anything up to 70,000 points

Let’s be clear about one thing.  No-one loses in the long term here.  In each case, you can book an equivalent or higher value property than you could previously book.  For example, at present a Cat 9 is a 45,000 point hotel and you can book anything up to 60,000 points from January.

Some people have clearly spent more than necessary.  Anyone who has a Category 6, Category 8 or Tier 1-3 Travel Package could have bought a cheaper package one level lower and still been able to book the same hotels.

It is also worth noting that, because of the caps, from January it doesn’t matter what certificate you currently hold – no-one can book a standard or peak date Cat 8 hotel.  Both of these are more than 70,000 points.  You could get a Cat 8 on an off-peak date which would be 70,000 points.  Check out the new reward chart:

I am surprised that Marriott did this.  Clearly some of its higher value members will now feel a little annoyed, even though they are no worse off.  That’s human nature.

If, in the last few days, you upgraded a Cat 1-5 to a Cat 6, or a Cat 7 to a Cat 8, or a Cat 9 to a Tier 1-3, I would certainly be sending Marriott a note to ask for a refund given that you have literally wasted those points.

The real question is why Marriott Rewards could not have released this information earlier, as it is now too late.  This is especially true given that you can no longer upgrade any certificate you currently have in the bank.

Whilst it won’t please everyone, this is great news for me, i deliberated long and hard whether to upgrade my 1-5 ‘just in case’, but in the end didn’t bother, just figured I’d cash it in and cut my losses if it came to it.

So this is a nice surprise, even using it on a 30k a night hotel for 2 nights (effectively wasting 5 nights) is better value than surrendering the cert.

  • James says:

I have a Cat 1-5 cert currently, this seems like a win for me if I’m prepared to travel off peak, as I’ll be able to afford a ‘new cat 5’ if I book after Jan, which obviously includes more hotels than it did before!

  • Roman says:

Do we know what peak and off-peak dates are?

    • BJ says:

Varies by hotel I believe, with Marriott imposing limitations on number of days a hotel can choose to be peak or off peak.

    • Rob says:

No. Will be 100 days of each, set on a country level apparently.

      • BJ says:

That’s better then, more predictable and easier to plan. A bit odd though peak seasons vary markedly within some countries.

      • David says:

I thought it was going to be consistent at city/area level, not country.
I’m sure I read someone posting that somewhere.

        • Rob says:

That’s what I was told but I’m not sure that person really knows for sure.

  • AndyW says:

I guess one reason they held back is because the uncertainty may have stopped people buying a load of travel packages at the old generous rate.

  • Henry says:

No idea if this is a glitch to be fixed – but my Marriott account currently shows me as platinum despite being previously matched to. Gold elite via spg. Understood we were being matched to gold in the new scheme.

    • Andrew S says:

Lucky. I show as gold elite in spg and marriot

    • Tom1 says:

Me too – it was definitely showing as gold elite on Saturday and this morning is platinum elite.

      • Graham Walsh says:

So I updated the SPG app on my iPhone and logged in. My password manager was suggesting to login with Marriott details (but I also have a SPG login). I did the Marriott login and it shows me as platinum elite and 7k points (my Marriott balance). Wonder where my 14k SPG points are then? Not sure I dare login with SPG credentials to be downgraded.

        • Rob says:

You need to opt in to the account merger. It is not automatic.

        • Graham Walsh says:

Never saw that option. Maybe one of the many emails from SPG that I didn’t read properly.

      • guesswho2000 says:

Same, I’m platinum now too, happy days. We’ll see if it lasts

      • Kipto says:

I am still shown as gold elite with Marriott and gold with SPG. Not happy if others are platinum !!!

    • Alex W says:

+1 I am Platinum! Get in there! I hope this is not a temporary glitch…

      • Simon says:

Im showing as Platinum Elite in Marriott but Gold Elite in SPG, having been Gold via Amex Platinum previously….. Any idea if I can do a quick, worthwhile Status match anywhere before this is fixed?!

      • Genghis says:

+1 for Plat. That would be a score as I’d already written off free breakfast and lounge access for rest of year. Let’s see how it pans out.

        • Ian M says:

I was under the impression I would become a Platinum Premier Elite but I’ve been given just normal Platinum elite status.

        • Crafty says:

          Hey me too! Lovely surprise.

    • Tom1 says:

Did you have a Marriott and SPG account before? Or just Marriott?
The only thing I can think of is that my Marriott and SPG accounts were unlinked a few weeks ago.

    • Mariusz says:

Would that be a benefit of a Marriott MC?
My brother has the card and his account shows Platinum today.

      • Andrew S says:

My spg points and upcoming booking have not flowed through to the marriot a point yet so maybe they haven’t got to me yet haha

        • Andrew S says:

I see what has happened. They’ve given me a new Marriot account even though my existing accounts were linked. Annoyingly this also linked to gold in Marriot.

    • Wally1976 says:

+1 I’m showing as platinum too!! Free breakfast at the Courtyard Gatwick for us (hopefully) which I’ve just rebooked at lower points cost! Does a whole family of 4 get the free breakfast??

    • Pid says:

+1. Hopefully they will not fix the glitch as it save a lot of money when I use my TP!

    • Optimus Prime says:

I’m Platinum too but my only stay in 2019 will be at a Ritz which comes with nothing but a 1000-points welcome gift 🙁

  • MDA says:

What status will you receive with Amex Plat?

  • Czechoslovakia says:

Feel a bit silly now upgrading to a cat6 two weeks ago, but hey-ho. 7 nights booked in August 19, hotel we wanted, dates we wanted and 85k LH miles in the bank. 200k AMEX MR at effective zero cost turned into £2300 of value. Plus booked the second room at the hotel at the older cheaper rate in advance. Not sure I’d save for MTPs going forward though…

    • Alex W says:

Definitely not… can’t see me doing anything with Marriott from 2019.

      • BJ says:

That should not be hard. I’ve never been keen on the chain anyway since having no option but stump up $350pn plus tax for a dump in Austin over 20 years ago. Stayed with them only three times since, 2 were ok and another was a bad experience.

  • Alex W says:

So with a Cat 9 package, from 2019 I can book a Cat 6 any time or Cat 7 at standard and off peak dates? That sounds too good to be true… just don’t feel I can trust what is coming out of Marriott on social media / blogs right now.
