How to get a hotel status match to Wyndham Rewards

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

You can now get a status match to Wyndham Rewards – although it is not hugely useful to UK residents.

Wyndham – even though you may never have heard of it – is actually the largest hotel group in the world with over 8,000 properties.  The majority of these are low-cost hotels in the USA, primarily outside major cities, and you are unlikely to stay in one unless you are doing a US road trip.

In the UK, Wyndham Rewards is the loyalty scheme for hotel chains Ramada and Days Inn.  It also covers chains which you don’t find in the UK – Wyndham, Tryp, Wingate, Hawthorn, Microtel, Baymont, Super 8, Howard Johnson and the US (not UK) Travelodge.

There are around 30 Wyndham Rewards hotels in the UK.  The Days Inn hotels are generally found on motorway service stations which is why you may have missed them, although there are a couple in London.  The Ramada properties are better spread.

A number of the better hotels have been reflagged in the last couple of years.  The Ramada at Excel in London is now a DoubleTree.  The Ramada at the Mailbox in Birmingham is now under AC Hotels, a Marriott brand.  The Days Inn at Waterloo, pictured below, is about as exciting as it gets.

If your travels do take you to Wyndham properties, you can now get a 90-day status match from any existing hotel status you have.

This is a pretty decent status match as these things go:

You can match to ALL levels of the programme, including the top Diamond tier

They are being generous in what match they give

For example, in order to get top tier Diamond status, you only need:

Gold Elite in Marriott Rewards (free with Amex Platinum)

Gold in Hilton Honors (free with Amex Platinum)

Platinum Elite in IHG Rewards Club (free with IHG Rewards Club Premium Mastercard)

Gold in Radisson Rewards (free with Amex Platinum)

You see a full list by clicking the link in the terms and conditions on the status match page.  It doesn’t work if I link to the chart directly.

This means that the majority of Head for Points readers should be able to get Diamond status by one route or another.

It may even be worth getting the match purely to do another match elsewhere.  For example, you could match your Hilton Gold status to Wyndham Diamond and then match your Wyndham Diamond to Hilton Diamond via Hilton’s status match.  Hilton requires one recent stay with the competing chain so you’d need to do a quick Days Inn or Ramada night as well.

Of course, if you’re unlikely to be staying in a Wyndham Rewards property in the next 90 days then it probably isn’t worth the effort unless you have a secondary match lined up.

There is one perk though …. Platinum and Diamond members of Wyndham Rewards get an automatic status match to Caesars Entertainment Total Rewards.  If you are heading to Las Vegas soon then this is worth a look.  You can see the Total Rewards benefits here ….. they include NO RESORT FEES on your bill, use of priority check-in lines and a $100 dinner credit for Diamonds.

You can learn more about the Wyndham Rewards status match here.

    Rob,

There’s a lot more than 30 Wyndham hotels in the UK. I think the total is closer to 90. 30 sounds about right for the number of Ramadas, but then you have to add all the Days Inns. I rarely stay at their hotels in the UK, mostly because their locations tend to be terrible (but there’s some real gems like the Belfast Ramada), but my wife and I love our US roadtrips, and they’re invaluable for that: in a lot of rural areas, either they’re the only chain option, or the other chain options are just as low-rent, but cost twice as much (Fairfield being a big offender here!)

As a top tier Diamond elite, you get Suite Upgrades, which can be nice.

  • TM says:

How does it work after the 90 days if I only stay 1 night? Does it go back to “zero?” Once I status match to Hilton Diamond, will this last a year (if I wait until after 31 Jan?)

    • Rob says:

Wyndham goes back to zero. Your Hilton Diamond would run to March 2020.

      • TM says:

        thanks

        • Mark says:

Wouldn’t the Hilton just be a challenge? so you’d need to do the 8 stays to keep it until March 2020?

          • Rob says:

Yes, but they would put you on the challenge – which they wouldn’t do unless you had Wyndham Diamond.

        • YB says:

From reading the website, it looks like you have to do the 8 stays within 90 days, and only then would they let you keep the status to March 2020? That’s different to keeping the status to March 2020 while you complete 8 stays.

      • Steve S says:

What if you already have status ie gold

  • Rum says:

I got a rather poor ‘Spend £2,700 for 1,500 points’ on my Platinum which is currently my only Amex. Gold got the chop recently. I won’t be taking up the offer.
That said, my six months for BAPP are almost up so I will be applying again next week. SPG is also due in early December so hoping to rinse the points again.

  • Matt says:

OT – Just cancelled my BA Amex Premium Plus card, as I got the companion voucher some weeks ago.
AMEX insisting to me over the phone that I can only use the companion voucher with the exact BA AMEX card that I earned it with, which has not been the case in the past, I could use it with any AMEX Card. Would be disappointed if they changed the conditions!
    Do people believe this rule?

    • Rum says:

Yes I got this too earlier this year when I cancelled. Told them ‘I don’t care if I lose my companion voucher’ and they eventually let me cancel. I used the voucher a week later, travelled and have since got back. Mind you, I did have that BAPP card open for three consecutive years. So this will be the first time I’m churning it.

      • Matt says:

So you were still able to use the companion voucher and pay with a different AMEX card OK? I assume it was not a BA AMEX?

    • Genghis says:

      In short, no. Standard spiel.

    • Anna says:

Yes, any Amex. I’ve previously paid the “taxes” on long haul flights with new Amex cards to trigger the sign up bonus (as well as 3 x avios if using a BAPP) – makes being charged that amount in fees a tiny bit less painful if you’re getting a good chunk of reward points back.

  • Ali says:

Am I the only one who thinks the extra MR offers are anything but generous? With the exceptions of the £400 spend offers you’re getting less than 1 MR per £.

    • Sussex Bantam says:

I’m with you – much better putting my spend through to sign-up bonuses rather than these offers.

      • DaveF says:

        nearly 3 points per £ for me, spend 1400 get 4000. 🙂

Not often I get a winner.

    • Sam says:

I don’t have any of these so can’t check. Is it not in addition to the standard base rate points?

      • DaveF says:

Yes it’ll be in addition to standard, so i’ll get 5400 points for 1400 spend. That’ll be enough of a reason to keep it until xmas. I was about to cancel the Plat and shift to the basic MR.
