Malaysia Airlines ‘drops’ First Class by calling it Business Suite – and you can’t use Avios

Malaysia Airlines – a oneworld partner of British Airways – has made a marketing decision to rename its First Class product as ‘Business Suite’.

The airline has stated that it made the move as a result of many corporates now refusing to pay for First Class.  The Business Suite – which is available from London Heathrow on Malaysia’s A350-900 and A380 fleet – will be offered at a premium over a standard Business Class seat and will be cheaper than it previously cost to book First Class directly.

As you can see in the photo below, it is a very nice product.  The A350-900 version pictured has fully enclose suites with doors.

Malaysia Airlines A350-900 First

Nothing else is changing.  Business Suite customers will still, it seems, get the old First Class food, First Class amenity kits etc.

Here’s the bad news.  It seems that Avios customers are going to lose out.

When I looked last week, it seemed that the new ‘Business Suite’ could not be booked using Avios.  I tried to double-check this yesterday and could not find ANY Malaysia Airlines Avios availability from London, in ANY class, for ANY date, so I am guessing there was some sort of IT issue.

Even when it returns, however, I doubt ‘Business Suite’ will be bookable.  The only way of getting into the ‘Business Suite’ would appear to be if Malaysia allows you to pay a supplement.  It looks like I will need to cross this one off my bucket list ….

  • BJ says:

Who said the £117 was annual…multitrip travel insurance, 1%, fee free etc ???

    • Anna says:

Hmm yes, yesterday Rob said wait till you see the monthly fee, I don’t think he meant £9.75!

    • BJ says:

None of the banks can make their packaged accounts work for under £10/month and this offers much more than those. However, I don’t see this being worth more than double amex platinum (unless Liz gets one 🙂 ) so who knows.

    • Rob Walker says:

The screenshot shows that £117 is annual, but doesn’t say what the fee is for. I would suspect £9.75 is for Black, and that metal will be more. But I have no idea really.

  • G says:

OT: Went to Gothenburg on Friday on BA and the flight was delayed, eventually landing at 00:15 (1 hour 45 minutes late). I had pre booked a coach from the airport to the city, however the last one left at 00:30 so I missed that. In the end had to wait an hour or so for a taxi as that was the only way to get to the city at that hour. I have Amex Plat (flight, hotel and taxi paid for on another Amex card) and Tesco CC travel insurance. Should I be claiming from these or BA for the cost of the taxi? Would I get any compensation for the 2+ hours I eventually lost to the delay?

    • aba says:

It is under 3 hours late so nothing from BA. You would have to read the T&C’s of the travel insurance to see what the delay conditions are. Although only 1 h 45 late, is not that late and was only really a problem due to being a late flight anyway.

      • Oli says:

I have previously claimed Ubers from the airports to London when I missed my last trains due to late arrivals <3h. BA have always paid up without hesitation…

        • David says:

EC261 duty of care does not require 3hr delay. I’ve successfully claimed lunch but was denied €250 on a flight that was 2hr 57m late (according to BA).

Claim from BA first, and try travel insurance afterwards if BA is too difficult.

    • G says:

Thanks all, I’ll give BA a go.

  • Anna says:

OT – BAPP question. Amex called us at the weekend, querying a transaction they had flagged as suspicious and asking if we wanted a new card issuing on my OH’s account. We confirmed the transaction was ours and said no we definitely don’t need a new card. This morning OH went to make some substantial pre-Xmas purchases before work and his BAPP was declined. His account is now showing a new card number so it looks as though they have actually cancelled his card – the week before Xmas!! He has hotel stays booked as well as plans to buy me a very expensive gift (of course!) It’s especially annoying as our spend year re-set last week so we were waiting until now to do a lot of spending for the next 2 4 1.

Anyone been in this position and received some kind of “acknowledgement” from Amex for the inconvenience? Many thanks!

    • SimonW says:

Not sure you will get anything for the inconvenience. But when my wife lost her card last week, the replacement came the next day, so you wont have long to wait.

      • aba says:

They are really fast with the replacements. Do you have a supplementary card on the account, as that one might not have been cancelled.

        • Anna says:

Yes have supplementary card but don’t really want to buy my own Xmas present and also OH has hotel stays without me booked this week.

It must have been ordered at the weekend but isn’t here yet.

        • Anna says:

They might be fast replacing them but they can’t do anything about the Royal Mail at this time of year!

    • Mr Dee says:

      Expect nothing form them!

  • BigSi says:

Cheers! Not had these offers for ages but got the £200 on mine and partners linked Platinum and the £50 one on partners gold card. Now need to figure out what to spend £1,400 on to trigger £450 saving!

  • TripRep says:

Rob, whats your thoughts on 75k Avios + a few quid being good value for Long Haul MH o/w, eg KUL-SYD.

    • BJ says:

Before you do that check cash rates exBKK or HKT via KUL. They can be very inexpensive at times making a positional flight wortwhile. Check for fares at OLTA not their web.

    • Rob says:

No idea what the cash equivalent is, to be honest, but for the distance (in terms of hours in a decent seat) and lack of taxes it looks decent.

  • TM says:

I got £200 off £600 on my platinum companion credit card, and £50 off £200 on my nectar.

I assume these work if you put through multiple Amex Travel transactions that reach the £600/£200 target?

  • Simon says:

OT – not booked with AMEX travel services before but this spend £600 for £200 rebate looks good. Can anyone confirm if they source any hotels (looking at Stockholm next May) or do they just offer the FHR and Hotel Collection properties?

    TIA
    S

    • SimonW says:

Yes, we used the previous one for 2 nights in NYC at a non-FHR hotel. As i remember, you wont want to book a FHR hotel as they will only charge you when you check out. You want a pre-booked rate that Amex charge you straight away, to trigger the offer.

      • Simon says:

many thanks Simon, I’ll give them a call – just didn’t want to look like an idiot if they only offered what I saw on the web site.

As an aside, did you compare costs to booking direct? I’m guessing they’d have to be considerably more expensive with AMEX to wipe out the £200 credit?

        • aba says:

They are more expensive, flights usually like £15 to £20. Hotels can be a bit more if they don’t have a special rate the hotel might have (plus you will not get points and probably not perks etc).

        • SimonW says:

I did compare. I picked a hotel in NYC that was on special offer on Amex site, so was already slightly cheaper than going direct, before the £200 saving ! The amex reps are super helpful, they know you want to trigger the offer. Though when I looked online for NYC I got FHR and non-FHR hotels so didnt need to call up

      • Steve says:

FHR and Hotel Collection bookings are not eligible according to T&Cs of the Amex offer

        • Simon says:

Thanks again Simon and Aba – also Steve as that could have been a bad/expensive mistake!

        • TM says:

Thats not quite how I read it – it says that bookings are not eligible made directly through FHR and THC. It sounds like you can book these provided you book through Amex Travel. Would be good if someone can confirm from the previous offer if this is true

        • Lee says:

Sorry, wrong reply. No, you won’t get if book through FHR as booking through FHR will be charged by hotel instead of AMEX travel

  • BlueHorizonuk says:

OT – Does anyone know if I book a Basic Economy fare (No Bag) on Amex Travel (books into V and M) and then call to upgrade to WT+ would I then get luggage thrown in?

    Thanks

    • BlueHorizonuk says:

If I pick a bag fare it books into Q (which isn’t upgradeable to WT+). Odd

      • Alex W says:

As I understand it, the cheapest economy fares, including but not limited to HBO, cannot be upgraded to WT+.

If you do successfully upgrade you should normally get the baggage allowances of the higher class.
