Qatar Airways launches new small business scheme

Qatar Airways has just launched ‘Beyond Business’, a new loyalty scheme for companies.  This is very similar to the British Airways On Business scheme, which I reviewed here.

It is a simple scheme.  Once your company is registered, you earn 1 Qreward point for every US$1 you spend on Qatar Airways flights.  Your points can be redeemed for Qatar Airways flights and flight upgrades.

It is very common for airlines to let you buy additional frequent flyer miles to top up your account.  What is very rare is for an airline to sell you status points.

I’m not sure how new this is, but a reader sent me details of a Qatar Airways status offer.

You can make a one-off purchase of Qpoints, the Qatar status currency, at $25 per point.  You are limited to one transaction every 36 months, so you would need to think carefully before jumping in.  There is no merit at all in buying all the Qpoints you need for status, since Qatar Airways Gold (equivalent to British Airways Silver) requires 300 points x $25!

There’s more. In addition to your bonus miles, Qatar Airways has made it easier for new sign-ups using the above code to gain elite status.

If you earn 100 Qpoints between now and 28th February 2019 you will be upgraded to Silver tier by 15th March. Earning 200 Qpoints in the same time frame will get you Gold. This is significantly fewer Qpoints than normal, when you need 150 and 300 for Silver or Gold respectively.

Is it worth it?

You need to the maths here to decide if this is a better deal than crediting your flights to British Airways Executive Club.  Remember that Qatar Privilege Club Silver tier is the equivalent to British Airways Bronze and Qatar Gold matches to British Airways Silver.
