Qatar Airways unveils a new economy seat – which looks good

I was at the launch of the new Qatar Airways economy seat in Berlin yesterday.  Economy travel is not something we focus on much, but I thought it was worth a quick look.

Let’s be clear.  There isn’t much you can do with a standard economy airline seat to make it better.  This is why I am quite impressed with what Qatar Airways is doing, where lots of incremental changes add up:

  • each seat gets a 13.3 inch 4K TV screen – it is almost as wide as the seat back.  My one worry here is that the screen glare from neighbouring seats will be annoying, especially if you are trying to sleep.
  • the seats are ultra-slim which seems to improve legroom – I tried one out and my 6’2′ frame was not wedged against the seat in front
  • there are two flip-down trays – one just below the TV which includes a cupholder and the usual 2nd tray just above knee level
  • the back of the seat in front curves inwards at the bottom, giving your knees more room
  • the seats are partially in shells – this means that if the person in front of you reclines, the back of their seat does not come forward into your face
  • all seats have USB charging sockets

Qatar Airways also announced an upgrade to their ORYX IFE system, taking it up to 4000 channels, and an increase in the size of food portions.  Desserts will be 50% larger whilst main courses will be 25% larger.   There will also be a move to using more recyclable and biodegradable items.

New Qatar Airways economy seat

That’s the good news.  The bad news is that you won’t be seeing this seat in a hurry.  It is being introduced initially on the new A320LR aircraft which will not serve the UK.  It will only be rolled out to other aircraft as part of the natural replacement cycle, which means it may take eight years to complete.

The food upgrade IS happening more quickly, however.  It is due to launch imminently and be available on all routes by the end of the year.

I suddenly want to collect Star Alliance points! Any tips?

I fly between Manchester and Antalya several times a year. Domestic flights within Turkey are ridiculously cheap. Just a week ago I flew from Antalya to Istanbul Attaturk for under £12 including 20Kg hold luggage allowance, meal and choice of seat. It is the leg to Manchester that has always been a pain. Things are looking up.

    • Rob says:

You need to have a poke around the reward charts of the various schemes looking specifically at a) the cost of EU to EU redemptions and b) more importantly, whether Turkey is lumped in with Europe or Asia.

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Amex MR transfers into SQ Krisflyer, which prices up return Europe-Middle East (Inc Turkey) in business at 65k miles.

      • Rob says:

I though SQ was 50k return on partners? That is clearly a bad deal then because it makes Turkey the same price as Dubai. You need a scheme which puts Turkey into Europe.

(There were days when some schemes put all of Russia into Europe and you could basically fly to within spitting distance of Japan on an EU-EU redemption …..)

        • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Right you are – it is indeed 50k. Bad deal is relative: sure you can go further for cheaper but if you only want to do MAN-Antalya then it’s certainly far more expensive on Avios for an inferior product. Your other MR transfer partner is SAS but they want 60k despite it being classed as Europe-Europe in their programme.

  • Felix Flyer says:

    31st April?!😁

  • Paul says:

No comment on QRs continuing threats to quit Oneworld?

    • Rob says:

Nah, can’t take Akbar seriously 🙂 And if they quit OW they would almost certainly retain a BA partnership so nothing would change on earning and burning Avios and TPs.

  • SG says:

    Morning all
Has anyone used Wheely between Gatwick to Heathrow? What would be the approximate cost?Would it be a good deal with the £25 off?

  • xcalx says:

OT Over the last few days I made a points booking on Hilton then cancelled. I thought it would reset the expiry date however it looks like they still expire in 28 days according to Award Wallet. Is this the norm now.

    Thanks

  • BJ says:

OT: No idea if info is reliable but a Virgin FC CSA has just informed me that AF/KLM award flights should be available within the next two weeks.

  • Tilly says:

O/T travelling LHR to Tokyo in September with return to LHR from Seoul. Need a flight from Japan to Seoul after our tour of the highlights of Japan (tour still unplanned with no hotels booked yet either). Is there a way of redeeming avios (only have BAEC) for a flight to Seoul from Tokyo or Osaka? Or best to just purchase cash tickets? Two of us travelling. If best to just purchase a cash ticket any airlines to avoid? On doing a search I couldn’t find any Air Asia. Korean and JAL are pricey for such a short flight. Anyone flown Jeju? Any help appreciated.

    TIA

    • BJ says:

Yes, on JAL very inexpensive on avios.

      • Tilly says:

Thanks. How do I do that? Nothing came up when I did a search on BA site. Can’t book through BAEC?

        • John says:

I think JL awards can only be booked 2 months in advance

        • BJ says:

If thar is not an option, can you access FlyingBlue miles, they are also quite good value on short JAL flights. I fatgef tgere are quite a lot of budget airlines out of NRT these days so perhaps worth exploring those. However, remember to factir in cost if getting to NRT from downtown.

        • Tilly says:

          Cheers.
No flyingblue miles as I don’t collect so might have to be cash.

    • Tony says:

DELTA is good between jpn and Korea, plenty of availabilities

    • LewisB says:

I booked with an airline called PEACH to fly from Osaka Kansai to Seoul. Cash price was less than £50 including luggage. Never flew it as I ended up stranded at the airport for a few days after the devastation from Typhoon Jebi, so I can’t recommend. But I would consider that over using avios, unless you’re avios rich.

      • Tilly says:

Thank you. I’ll look into it.

      • ankomonkey says:

PEACH are an LCC owned by ANA (I think). My wife has flown them and said they were fine. Tokyo/Osaka-Seoul is a pretty short flight.

        • Tilly says:

Thanks. I am more concerned about reliability and safety with LCCs that I’m unfamiliar with.

  • Flying Misfit says:

OT – Has anybody managed to use the 25 off 40 Amex code on Amazon recently?
Expiry date was extended to 31 March but also says first 8000 odd users to use code.

I think there was some talk about it being fiddly to apply in recent times but cannot get it to apply.

    • Shoestring says:

Used mine long ago – but if they extended the date to 31st March it’s still available

Try a dummy basket of *ONLY* sold-by-Amazon items where you go over £40 on (say) 3 different items (ie £120+)
Don’t forget to link your Amex card and use at least 2 MR points to part pay
      and use the code

You’ll be able to cancel before buying but it’ll tell you if you can get the code working

      • Flying Misfit says:

        Cheers Harry

Ticked all those boxes but just wouldn’t apply… got on chat and 25 squid applied there and then … along with the 6 for 50 gift card top up.. so result and sorted in 5 mins over chat

        • Shoestring says:

          result!

yep I had £25 from dear old Chat in similar circs, get the right agent and don’t act stroppy & they are good as gold
