Qatar Airways unveils a new economy seat – which looks good

I was at the launch of the new Qatar Airways economy seat in Berlin yesterday.  Economy travel is not something we focus on much, but I thought it was worth a quick look.

Let’s be clear.  There isn’t much you can do with a standard economy airline seat to make it better.  This is why I am quite impressed with what Qatar Airways is doing, where lots of incremental changes add up:

  • each seat gets a 13.3 inch 4K TV screen – it is almost as wide as the seat back.  My one worry here is that the screen glare from neighbouring seats will be annoying, especially if you are trying to sleep.
  • the seats are ultra-slim which seems to improve legroom – I tried one out and my 6’2′ frame was not wedged against the seat in front
  • there are two flip-down trays – one just below the TV which includes a cupholder and the usual 2nd tray just above knee level
  • the back of the seat in front curves inwards at the bottom, giving your knees more room
  • the seats are partially in shells – this means that if the person in front of you reclines, the back of their seat does not come forward into your face
  • all seats have USB charging sockets

Qatar Airways also announced an upgrade to their ORYX IFE system, taking it up to 4000 channels, and an increase in the size of food portions.  Desserts will be 50% larger whilst main courses will be 25% larger.   There will also be a move to using more recyclable and biodegradable items.

New Qatar Airways economy seat

That’s the good news.  The bad news is that you won’t be seeing this seat in a hurry.  It is being introduced initially on the new A320LR aircraft which will not serve the UK.  It will only be rolled out to other aircraft as part of the natural replacement cycle, which means it may take eight years to complete.

The food upgrade IS happening more quickly, however.  It is due to launch imminently and be available on all routes by the end of the year.

Thanks, great spot.Presumably it is 4800 avios for £20 then? Cannot see the finer details on the page. Also the order free sim button is not working.

  • nock says:

cancelled my SPG amex today and have cleared balance owing.
In my account, card is displayed as cancelled with zero balance.

anyway know how long I should wait to apply for new amex (BA)? Do the systems take a while to update?

I already hold a PLAT and 2 other CC’s from amex, hence wanting to cancel the 3rd CC before getting the BA one

    • BlueHorizonuk says:

I don’t think there is a limit anymore so you can apply when you want

    • Thomas Howard says:

Couldn’t you have referred yourself the BA card from the SPG for a 9000 point bonus?

      • Grant says:

Yes, but assuming nock has some referrals left then they’d be better referring from Plat for 18k MR points.

  • SimonW says:

O/T – AMERICAN EXPRESS PROMOTION CREDIT of £5 hit my Amex Plat today. I can only think this is the elusive PayPal £5 credit from last year….

  • James says:

OT – I used my 2 complimentary lounge club passes which come with the Amex Gold Credit Card. If I cancel the card and reapply in 6 months time, will I receive a new Lounge Club card with an additional 2 complimentary passes or do I have to wait a year for that?

    • Shoestring says:

      2 new passes

      • Michael says:

I never received the two new passes – just seemed to get added to my current lounge club card.

        • Shoestring says:

yep, correct, they get applied to your existing Lounge Club card if it’s within date so don’t bin it when you cancel Gold

  • Jonathan says:

Re: Qatar economy seats being “ultra-slim”. Does that mean they’re like the new BA ET seats on the densified Airbus/Ryanair/EasyJet? If so I’d rather sacrifice some legroom/take an aisle seat than develop a pressure sore thanks!

    • Rob says:

      Looked very similar.

      • Alan says:

Hmm not great – fine for 2h or so but pretty uncomfortable after that.

    • flyforfun says:

Just back from a 4 sector trip on Cathay’s A350 who have similar seats. It’s interesting the article doesn’t say what the width of the seats will be, because in Economy, that’s just as important as leg room. Cathay’s 350 is 3-3-3 and 18″ width. It has the 2 trays as well as storage areas when the small tray comes out.

The negative for the seat is that you feel every time the person behind you goes in their seat pocket or opens a tray table.

The big positive is their innovative 6 way head rest that they don’t seem to tell people about. The 2 wings open outward and have a leather strip supporting your head. As a normal side sleeper, this made it excellent for me being on my back.

Their TV is HD and had some sort of shielding on it so that its not obtrusive to the next passenger, unlike when they use their personal devices.

  • Grant says:

Anyone got this to work yet? Looks like there are some IT issues

  • Grant says:

Do they ever run similar promotions in the UK?

    • Kiran says:

They used to run them every year or so but I haven’t seen any since 2013.

  • Neil says:

Delta is 1 option but I would personally would set up a Qantas account. You can always top it up via Marriott if needed
