BIG NEWS: American Express blocks multiple sign-up bonuses, starting immediately

American Express unveiled massive changes to its UK card sign-up bonuses last night.

This will effectively end card churning for most people.

Before I go on, I want to stress one thing.  The new rules on bonuses do NOT stop you applying for any of these cards.  They simply influence whether or not you will qualify for a sign-up bonus when you do.

It is also worth remembering that, even if YOU no longer qualify for a particular bonus, your partner or other adult family members might.

What is changing?

Until today, American Express sign-up bonuses followed two basic rules:

Cards were grouped into families based on reward type (Membership Rewards points, Avios, Starwood points, Nectar points) and your eligibility for a bonus depended on whether you had recently had a card in the same ‘family’

There was a six month restriction in place between cancelling an American Express card and being able to re-apply – with a new bonus – for a card in the same ‘family’

This is what is changing for the personal American Express cards:

The concept of ‘families’ has gone for most products.  The eligibility rules now span ALL personal American Express cards in most cases.

The look-back period increases from six months to 24 months

Whilst there are two exceptions, in simple terms you cannot get a sign-up bonus on a personal American Express card if you have held ANY personal American Express card in the last 24 months.

Are there any exceptions to these new rules?

Yes.  There are a few exceptions to the above:

The British Airways American Express Premium Plus Card is only impacted by the change in the look-back period to 24 months.   The old rules on eligibility remain – you cannot have had either of the two British Airways American Express cards in the previous 24 months BUT American Express does not count any other card you may have had.

(In plain English: if you’ve had a Platinum / Gold / Starwood / Nectar / Platinum Cashback card in the last two years, but NOT either of the BA Amex cards, you are eligible for the bonus on the Premium Plus card – but not the free BA Amex)

The Platinum Card is only impacted by the change in the look-back period to 24 months.   The old rules on eligibility remain – you cannot have had a Preferred Rewards Gold, Green, Platinum or American Express Rewards card (all of which earn Membership Rewards points) in the previous 24 months BUT American Express does not count any other card you may have had.

(In plain English: if you’ve had a BA / Starwood / Nectar / Platinum Cashback card in the last two years but NOT a card offering Membership Rewards points, you are eligible for the bonus on the The Platinum Card – but not Preferred Rewards Gold)

Small Business and Corporate products are not impacted at all.  The existing rules apply for those.  Importantly, the six month rule continues to apply for these cards.

(In plain English: if you’ve not had any personal or business card offering Membership Rewards points in the past six months, you are eligible for the bonus on the American Express Gold Business and American Express Platinum Business, assuming you own a qualifying small business)

  • Andy says:

If a friend refers me for the BA premium Amex card, will I get any bonus avios for signing up through their referral link? I have held an Amex Gold card within the past 24 months.

    • TGLoyalty says:

As long as you haven’t held an AMEX issued BA branded card in the last 24 Months you will get the sign up bonus

  • Dave Barron says:

Slightly OT – I’ve had a bit of a nightmare with Amex yesterday and would appreciate views.

2 weeks ago I cancelled the supplementary gold card for my wife and received postal confirmation of my request from Amex. Once received I then did the upgrade to Platinum for 20k bonus points. My intention was then to reapply to add my wife as supplementary to the new platinum card for 5k bonus points. I know application has been approved as a platinum card now appears instead of gold on the Amex app, but my card hasn’t yet been received (prob in post today). However yesterday a platinum supplementary arrived in post for my wife! I did a web chat last night and Amex have now cancelled it apologising saying I should be able to reapply for a card for my wife today. I fly to Canada in just over two weeks and was hoping to have both platinum cards and associated priority plus cards before travel, although Amex say to allow up to 28 days for receipt. As we are travelling as a group of 4 then the priority pass for me is fairly useless unless by then I’ve also received one for her! What is the experience of others receiving their passes? Thanks!

    • Shoestring says:

You won’t thank me for saying it but I would just have kept the supp card & her Priority Pass – not worth messing around just to try and get the 5000 point ‘first supp’ bonus (which you probably won’t get anyway now, might have to get on the phone to Amex again). Her Priority Pass may not work as the underlying card has been cancelled. Having said that, Amex and Priority Pass are both fast card issuers.

      • Dave Barron says:

Thanks for thoughts! Amex on webchat yesterday implied a priority pass wouldn’t be issued because the card wasn’t activated but not sure how true that is! Will add again tonight or tomorrow and will just have to wait and see I guess!

    • pablo says:

Reapply for the supplementary tomorrow and you will still get 5K. They post them rather quick too.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Should have asked in here first. You will get the 5K by just adding a free gold supp to your account for yourself or your wife and she would have been able to keep the one thats already arrived

  • PGW says:

Although I’ve never been a dedicated ‘churner’ I have been in and out of the various amex cards over many years usually because they have proactively offered me the opportunity. Clearly they have concluded that they are better off cutting this practice out which is understandable.

This will probably result in me ditching my cards as I’ve also become pretty disillusioned with the value of the 241 to deliver for me to the places I want to go and to keep charges within sensible limits.
Today I’ve booked 2 revenue ex EU Club returns to the US for next month which, taking everything into account was a better deal that utilising 1 of the 3 241’s I have sitting in my BAEC account.

    • Mr. AC says:

Wow, that’s depressing! As a counterpoint, by my rough calculation I’ve saved ~1700-2200 pounds using a 241 on a 2 x Club World booking I made yesterday, so there are still savings to be had.

  • Dave says:

If I use my wifes gold car to refer me to a platinum card does she get 9000 or 18000 miles for refering? Does this also still bump the platinum up to 35000?

    • Waddle says:

Referral from Gold is 9,000 I think. The sign-up bonus will be 35,000 for you as long as you haven’t had a MR card in the past 2 years. You’re ok if you have had any other type.

    • Alan says:

      She will get 9000.

  • Ed says:

Maybe the cash back cards come into play now, especially during 24 month cooling off period.

    • Shoestring says:

either that or the Virgin cards

luckily both the Virgin cards are pretty generous on points, so you won’t really miss out on everyday spending points while you are in a fallow Amex period

  • Dave says:

    thanks!

  • S says:

I imagine the BAPP is now going to be an absolutely worthless card for most, as most people can’t reasonably spend enough to earn 100~200k points, without churning, that are necessary for a worthwhile Avios redemption.

We’ll just spam referrals for this/next year. After that we’re moving abroad anyway,

    • Genghis says:

Worth it when you need that 241 though, perhaps not on an ongoing basis.

  • Kathy says:

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted, but this all but kills the game for me. It simply takes too long for me to earn points without sign-up bonuses – given that I am not a frequent flyer, don’t have a partner to do the refer-apply cycle with, and have struggled to earn tesco Clubcard points since the offers dried up – to make it worthwhile.

    • BJ says:

Keep on collecting Kathy, there is always something comes along. Big awards may be difficult or even out of reach but small awards can be useful too. Get to know the sweet spots on each scheme and see if you can make them work for you. Current Tesco sim offer is a good opportunity for most to get at lest 9600 avios.

      • Shoestring says:

Who’d have thought we could all earn 180,000 very cheap points from Iberia just a few months ago, eh BJ? 🙂

        • BJ says:

Really? how could I have missed that one 🙂

        • Lady London says:

Only cos i seem to recall you Saïd you would stay out of it @ BJ?

        • Kathy says:

I am wishing that I’d jumped on that now! Oh well.
I’m sitting on 25K MR points, 80K Virgin points, 7k Avios and about £75 of Clubcard vouchers at the moment – and should get one more upgrade voucher out of Lloyds.
So I should manage at least one more trip to East Coast USA out of the game, and maybe some shorthaul RFS.

        • BJ says:

@LadyLondon, I’m suffering from voluntary total amnesia or something like that.
