A quick note for Edinburgh visitors that the Hilton Edinburgh Grosvenor is leaving the chain tomorrow.

It isn’t clear which brand, if any, it will be adopting.

If you have any stays booked here you may wish to change them, especially if you were expecting elite status benefits or points earning.

There are various other options in Edinburgh city centre, including the Waldorf Astoria The Caledonian (where I spent a couple of nights recently, although I didn’t review it), Hilton Edinburgh Carlton, DoubleTree Edinburgh City Centre and Hampton Edinburgh West End.

The hotel website is here – for another 24 hours – if you want to find out more.

OT – I have booked a flights with avios and a 2-4-1 voucher that I need to cancel, will I get my voucher back?

  • paulm says:

Indeed same for me. 37K total and I doubt I will get even half of that!

    • Matt says:

At least the link works for you. I get: “Oh, no! Based on your current earning preference, you aren’t eligible for this offer. But here are others you might like: View other IHG® Rewards Club offers now.”

Whatever that means? I’ve registered successfully for accelerate for the last couple years.

      • Gin and Tonic Please says:

Same here. I’m guessing there are a few glitches to be sorted out before they properly go live. Will give it a couple of days.

However, based on the other half’s measly 19K offer, I’m not sure it’ll be worth the wait…

      • Alan says:

        Yep, I get the same

  • Andrew MS says:

It would have been interesting if the Which reporter complained about here stay to Management at checkout ?

    • delbert says:

Not sure why anyone would stay at a Britannia given the appalling reviews and reputation they’ve made for themselves. That said, I do feel sorry for the frontline staff that have to take the flak.

      • TGLoyalty says:

But surely some of those staff are part of the problem?

Their attitude to the service industry and the way they themselves handle cleanliness.

        • delbert says:

I understand your logic, TGLoyalty. But having worked in the industry many years ago this is a management issue not a staff issue. Lack of Investment and lack of leadership start at the top.

        • RussellH says:

How do you know that they are not following management instructions to save money by, among other things, spending as little time as possible on cleaning, as long as things are just about on the OK side of the HSE rules?

      • Greg says:

Indeed. Last time I stayed at a Britannia was many, many years ago at one close to Manchester Airport. It was like staying in a cold, dank cellar with manky sheets and a cold shower and a shitty TV which only received BBC1, ITV and Channel 4. Never have I been so glad to check out of a hotel. I’ll never stay in one of them again

      • Liam says:

A few years ago I ran a training day (not related to running a hotel, I should add!) at the Britannia Country House Hotel, just outside Manchester. It was a 9am start and I live and work in London so a free night’s accommodation was included as part of the fee. That still felt expensive.

      • BJ says:

Stayed at the International a couple of times soon after it opened and it was nice but apparently it went downhill fast too. Seems it’s all down to poor management at every level.

  • Alan says:

    OT IHG question.

If I book a night with the free night voucher (for spending £10K on credit card) and need to cancel, do I get the voucher refunded?

  • BrianN says:

Is this definitely the new promotion from IHG? I signed up and got an error message saying not eligible but also got a blank (no offer/target details) email saying I was registered. A bit strange.

  • Rob says:

Should have booked it via Amex FHR and got the $100 food and drink credit on top!

    • delbert says:

After reading some of the reviews the $100 food and drink credit would appear to be a cruel and unusual punishment, Rob. 😉

  • N says:

OT – eurostar e-voucher. I have an e-voucher that expires in September. If I book a refundable Business ticket then cancel, what happens to the refund? Is it reissued as a new voucher? Or does it go back to original expiry date?

    • Lady London says:

Eurostar is pretty much run by the French and French rail conditions always say you can exchange within the life of the voucher only. Thats probably within the small print somewhere.

      • Alex Sm says:

Eurostar is appalling in general. Being a French / British facing service, they couldn’t comprehend that my name could be spelt Alexander in one passport and Alexandre in the other. They treated me as TWO different persons. No wonder they have so many issues with everything. And their loyalty programme is too complicated and ropey. I would stay away from them, if possible, to be honest

  • Lady London says:

This is why i postes earlier that to bother with this Hilton offerts i will have to sée ahead that i van vive them 16 stays in thé four summer months allowed.

16 stays because thé fürst useful bonus kicks in after 15 stays. But Hilton have Marriottized so now thé 1st stay you vive them in thé période doesnt count. 10,000 points isnt motivational when they want 10 stays for that. I can get that value with far fewer stays elsewhere.

So thé only way i czn sée myself using this promotion is if m’y client turns out to have a Hilton next door. In which case Hilton light well Get thé stays anyway. At thé stay levels required for this promo to make a différence Hilton will be rew as rewarding stays they’d get from regular stayers anyway. Perhaps this is Hilton new marketing approach.
