The InterContinental Lyon hotel opens – and looks stunning

IHG has just opened a new InterContinental in Lyon.  It is surprising it has taken this long given that Lyon is France’s 2nd largest metropolitan area and has significant banking, chemical and pharmaceuticals industries.

The new hotel occupies a building that was, until 2010, the striking Hotel Dieu hospital complex on the banks of the Rhône.  Looking at the photographs, it is a shame they don’t build hospitals like this any more!

The hotel has 144 rooms, 34 of which are split-level ‘Duplex Suites’ with views across the river.  There is also a 150 sq m presidential suite.

Amenities include a 1,500 sq m convention space as well as 12 meeting rooms. There is also a spa with gym, hammam and sauna, as well as a restaurant specialising in Lyonnaise dishes.

The 32 meter high dome, formerly a chapel, has been turned into a magnificent bar.  There is also Club InterContinental lounge.

This looks like the sort of hotel which may justify a weekend break in its own right.  You are looking at cash rates of €250 per night for a standard King Superior room for a weekend in early September.

For the same room you will pay 55,000 points, which is around 0.4p per point.  Given that we generally value IHG Rewards Club points at the same 0.4p, this is a decent but not spectacular way of spending them.  Unfortunately only standard rooms are available for points.

OT bought some WTP tickets from OTA last week man-mia for £466 seemed too cheap,
I can login In on BA and see the booking/choose seats etc ,what’s the longest time anyone has waited for bookings to be cancelled on error/mistake fares?

    • David says:

I think TLV last year took about a week.

    • Michael says:

When are you flying? Give it a few weeks to be on the safe side. I booked a mistake BCN-FCO-LAX-JFK-FCO-BCN in Alitalia Biz in January and turned out to be fine.

      • Mart says:

December however I have avios, taxes and fees to refund ,that can now be used for another trip 😀

    • Lady London says:

I think you will be OK. There’s been some very cheap fares recently to East Coast USA. That fare is not very much under the regular type of fare I’ve been seeing.

  • SG says:

    Virgin CC promotion
I have recently taken the VA free credit card and spent the £1000(no statement yet)
Recently readers of this site have reported being incentivised by Virgin CS to continue spending for additional miles
Anyone on free card recently targeted or do you need to ring and enquire?

  • Simonbr says:

OT but concerning IHG: when booking a basic room on their website with points, what is the best way to upgrade to a club level room (since these rooms are not bookable using points or points plus money)? Is it best to book online then negotiate directly with the hotel in advance?

  • Sharon says:

‘re the ihg bonus, I have to buy 25000 to get 100% bonus, but on my husband’s account he only needs to buy 7000.

  • rotundo says:

OT: hopefully more efficient security checks at LHR on the way! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-48526019

    • Marcw says:

LHR security has been always fast (at least T5).

    • TGLoyalty says:

Can’t believe first wing wasn’t built with two of these.

    • Anna says:

But will you be able to carry on more than 100 ml of shampoo etc?!

  • meta says:

Regarding IHG points, I have an increased purchase limit of 150k (300k with the bonus) for $1500 for this promo. Also looking at next year’s Early May Bank holiday, the cash prices for basic room at Intercontinental Lyon are 769 euros. In February, it’s around 334 euros. So it varies substantially.

    • Rob says:

This hotel is worth far more than €250 but it will take a while to build up demand. I think it will jump up and then get moved to a higher points category too.

      • meta says:

+1 Booked on points next year for Early May Bank Holiday. If the price drops (doubt it), I might switch to cash. Even the standard rooms apparently have views of historic buildings.

  • Michael Jennings says:

OT: I got myself an IHG premium Mastercard from Creation last August. I’m not sure the precise opening date, but they charged me the annual fee on August 18 and the first statement was issued on August 22. I have just hit the £10,000 spend for the free night certificate. My understanding is that this will be issued after I have had the card for 12 months. When exactly will I get it? On the anniversary date? On the statement date in August? Sometime after a delay after this? I’d like to use it in September, so it would be nice to get it quickly.

    • Neil says:

I would also like to know more about this as I have just taken out the card! Are there any limitations on where I can use the card?

      • Kelvin Gray says:

It’s a Mastercard so you can use it pretty much everywhere.

      • Dougie Forde says:

How long is the free night valid for?

        • Genghis says:

1 year from issue, with the booking only (not necessarily stay) required in that time. Any cancellations once it’s expired however and you’ll lose it.

      • Michael Jennings says:

I have one free night certificate already from the two UK nights offer from earlier this year, and I have to use that one by the end of October. This one, I will hopefully have by the end of August, and I’d then like to use them for two consecutive nights. I will see if I get the second one in time.

    • Kelvin Gray says:

I’m pretty sure it’s on the annual statement date. The free night will appear in your IHG account and can be used immediately.

      • EwanG says:

The free night will appear in your Reward Club account at the end of the 12th month anniversary after opening your card. It should be on the same day the card spend points post In Mike’s case that will be at the end of August. It will say “IHG Premium Credit Card Free Night Award”
You can only book once you have it in your account, and it will require availability for that type of redemption at the hotel in question – in my experience availability is similar, but not exactly the same as the ‘rewards night’ availability. You can use it pretty well anywhere (to answer Neil’s question) – from a cheap HIX to a Kimpton, IC etc.

        • Neil says:

Thanks everyone! I should have written certificate and not card as I know it is accepted everywhere. I was wondering if the certificate is limited to redemption’s for 50,00 points or can I go all out and book the IC Park Lane for example.

          • Optimus Prime says:

You can book IC Park Lane, Amsterdam, everywhere. Also Venetian and Palazzo in Vegas and I guess their Bora-Bora resort if you happen to find reward availability 🙂

          • Neil says:

            Thank you @Optimus Prime 🙂

    • Simonbr says:

You will get the free night voucher into your IHG account shortly after the first creation statement of your new year is issued, when they have also taken the new £99 card fee. It is valid until the end of the twelfth month after its issue.

    • Genghis says:

If you applied for the card on 5 August, your statement date will be most likely around 21/22/23 of the month, your free night will be in your IHG account around the end of August the following year. Award wallet tracks it too.

  • Paul says:

With all the recent Amex changes, are there any bonuses available when upgrading a BA Amex Blue to BA Amex Premium Plus?

    (i need another voucher!) 🙂

    • Rhys says:

For many years people upgrading have been getting a 6,000 Avios bonus…nobody knows why and not everyone gets it…
