Get an IHG Rewards Club status match – including to top tier Spire Elite

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

IHG Rewards Club has launched a status match promotion, offering 2,500 members with UK or US addresses the chance to get a status match to top-tier Spire Elite.

If are not currently top tier in another programme, IHG will match your mid tier status to either Platinum Elite or Gold Elite.

Full details are on their website here.

You will have your new status for the next 90 days, and you can retain it by staying a specific number of NIGHTS (note nights, not stays) during those 90 days:

If you match to Spire Elite, you need to do 10 nights in 90 days to keep your status

If you match to Platinum Elite, you need to do 5 nights in 90 days to keep your status

If you match to Gold Elite, you need to do 2 nights in 90 days to keep your status

This page of the IHG website shows the benefits you get at each tier.

This is how the match works:

Step 1:  Go to this page of the IHG website

Step 2:  Upload a screenshot showing your status with another major hotel loyalty scheme – here is the list of options:

“Accor – Le Club AccorHotels
Best Western – Best Western Rewards
Caesars Entertainment – Caesars Rewards
Choice – Choice Privileges
Hilton – Hilton Honors
Hyatt – World of Hyatt
Marriott – Marriott Bonvoy
NH Hotel Group – NH Rewards
Radisson – Radisson Rewards
Wyndham – Wyndham Rewards

Step 3:  Once your status is updated online, enjoy your new benefits for 90 days!

Step 4:  Try to complete the required number of nights to keep your new status until 31st December 2020

The deadline for applying for a match is 30th June.  However, only 2500 Spire Elite matches will be given, so apply quickly if you want a top tier match.

If you do not complete the required number of nights to keep your status, you can still retain it at a lower level.  By which I mean …. if you match to Spire Elite but only manage 5 nights in 90 days, you will not drop down to nothing.  You will drop to Platinum Elite, which only required 5 nights in the first place.

This offer is, almost word for word, a copy of the current Hilton Honors status match.

The snag is that IHG Rewards Club status has fewer benefits.  Virtually nothing is guaranteed – even at Spire Elite, you do not get free breakfast or a guaranteed late check-out.  You certainly don’t get guaranteed lounge access, although the majority of Crowne Plaza hotels in Europe will offer it – but not InterContinentals.

The bottom line is that it is certainly better to have the status than not to have it, but don’t expect miracles.

What I would say is that you should check out your targets for the current IHG Rewards Club Accelerate promotion too.  Whilst a lot of Accelerate offers were quite weak for the Summer period, the extra carrot of a Spire Elite upgrade may be enough to get you to switch some stays to IHG.

Remember to apply for your match before 30th June – and ASAP if you want Spire Elite.

PS.  Remember that IHG Rewards Club Platinum Elite status is a benefit of having the £99 IHG Rewards Club Premium Mastercard.  Frankly, you are better off paying £99 for the credit card – which has excellent benefits, see my IHG Premium Mastercard review here – than doing mattress run nights to complete a Platinum Elite status match.

Similarly, Gold Elite is a benefit of having the FREE IHG Rewards Club Mastercard.  Do the status match if you want, but you will have Gold Elite status permanently as long as you keep the free IHG credit card.  My IHG Rewards Club Mastercard review is here.

In step 2 you state there isnt a list of schemes which are acceptable however if you go to the drop down when you apply it has a list which is:

    Accor – Le Club AccorHotels
Best Western – Best Western Rewards
    Caesars Entertainment – Caesars Rewards
    Choice – Choice Privileges
    Hilton – Hilton Honors
    Hyatt – World of Hyatt
    Marriott – Marriott Bonvoy
NH Hotel Group – NH Rewards
    Radisson – Radisson Rewards
    Wyndham – Wyndham Rewards

  • Gtellez says:

Done, let see if they match my Marriott Platinum with Spire or only Platinum. I already have 4 nights this summer, so maybe if they offer me Spire, I could bite and try to mainain it….

  • James says:

I jumped on it a few hours ago, and as HH Diamond am expecting Spire, but am now wondering why I bothered. I’ve had a look at several locations I routinely go to, and some I am thinking of going to in the next year or two, and the majority of what comes up is inferior to Hilton, yet often costs the same, and will apparently come with fewer perks.

I also dislike what I’ve read about Intercontinental effectively being apart from the rest of IHG. Apart from accumulating points, to burn on inferior stays, what good is this actually?

    • TGLoyalty says:

There are some CP’s that will treat a spire very well.

Intercontinental might be separate but Spire still means something and I’ve had some nice rooms in a some nice places ie the O2.

Tbh while I understand the breakfast thing for many the spire free drink isn’t bad either. I’ve got 2*£10 of value at some nice hotels with that and on 1/2 day trips I nearly always end up going out for the day to eat at a nice cafe etc or room service rather than breakfast in a lounge.

    • David says:

I’m Hilton Gold and ICHG Platinum these days – down from being RA. Looking to get a hotel in Paris with Mrs & Jnr and there’s nothing coming up on Holton that floats my boat, so probably going to be one of the HIs or the CP Republique. Perhaps Platinum will get me a better view, but I’m not bolding out for anything, especially against Parisian receptionists.

      • Lady London says:

If you’re looking for value in Paris I can heartily recommend the new Hampton Clichy. 25min from Opera/st Lazare/haussman by direct bus (65, iirc). New and quality rooms. Hampton breakfast included – usual Hampton breakfast which I don’t find particularly healthy but you can’t have everything.

Value in Paris is hard to find, decent plumbing even harder. I’ll be staying in this one as much as I can in future.

        • Lady london says:

*PS if you need to be central central or so, Rob did an excellent review of a hotel at République, I think about 15 months ago, might have been a Renaissance? Pricey though.

          • Rob says:

Yes, Renaissance Paris Reqpublique – excellent value for Bonvoy points, very classy.

  • TGLoyalty says:

If you are doing the nights anyway why not. But it’s really not worth chasing.

Like you say £99 gets you platinum and you can earn spire through spend.

Or you can buy ambassador status and get platinum included.

  • Dale says:

As a Platinum with the credit card I was well treated at the O2 IC on Saturday night (after Jessie J) with an upgraded room and 2pm checkout, no breakfast nor club room access but didn’t expect that. They gave me two free drinks which was a bonus.
But in general agree – Hilton Diamond is far better.

  • Dale says:

It’s just unfortunate that (unlike Hilton) IHG do not count reward stay nights towards this target, another black mark!

    • Gavin says:

That’s a shame – I have a chunk of night booked on points during the 90 day period!

  • Dimitri says:

IHG should increase spire points to 100k and cut all these promotions that flood the spire status and thus devaluing spire. On the same time they should really make lounge access for crowne plazas a global benefit. I can see why they don’t offer much now when anybody can become spire so easily.

    • Rob says:

Spire is already substantially tougher to get than Platinum was – credit card sign-ups no longer count, Virgin transfer no longer count, Accelerate points no longer count etc. It still hasn’t persuaded them to change anything.

Hilton gives out Diamond for free with US credit cards but that doesn’t stop it having excellent guaranteed benefits.

      • Dimitri says:

I think that you have a point Rob but on the same time Hilton properties also tend to be more expensive than the equivalent IHG properties and you get less amount of points to spend at properties.

Btw, do we have any update on the HFP event in London?

  • pommy ray says:

thanks!! at least ihg are trying to do something.
have plat would be nice to have spire and see if I can keep it. I.hope I don’t lose plat if I do less than 5 nights!! haha
