InterContinental Maldives resort now accepting IHG Rewards Club points bookings

The first luxury IHG property in the Maldives (if you exclude the Holiday Inn!) is about to open.

InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort is taking bookings for arrivals from 1st September.

It has been bookable for cash for a while, and reward nights have now been loaded.

That’s the good news.  The bad news is that IHG Rewards Club has thrown away the reward chart and is asking 100,000 points per night with a 2-night minimum.  Historically, if you exclude the Alliance casino hotels, the cap was 70,000 points.

100,000 points is not a bad deal, of course. 

The cheapest room – Beach Pool Villa – is around $1,000 per night including taxes.  This is what you get on a reward night.  You are getting 1 cent per point which is still excellent value, especially as IHG sells points for 0.5 cents when it runs a 100% bonus.

Even if have no IHG Rewards Club points, you could still get yourself a half-price stay here by buying all the points you need.  During a promotion, you can often buy up to 200,000 points per person at 0.5 cents, enough for two nights here.  Your partner could do the same to get you to four nights.

It isn’t clear yet if you can buy-up from a Beach Pool Villa to an overwater one.  This is especially important for families as the Beach Pool Villa only sleeps three.  A family of four needs the two-floor Lagoon Pool Villa which sleeps four.

The good news is that InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau includes a lot of freebies.  All rooms come with:

Breakfast and afternoon tea at Café Umi or The Retreat

Evening cocktails at The Retreat from 8:00pm till 10:00pm

Complimentary house pouring alcoholic beverages from 11:00am till 6:00pm

Transfers are not free ….

What isn’t free is your transfer.  Access from Male is via seaplane, so you will be on the hook for $580 return per adult and $290 return per child, plus taxes, for the transfer.  Even as a redemption this isn’t going to be cheap!

You should also note that, if you book a specific promo package on the resort home page for cash, transfers are included for free.  This requires, admittedly, a five night minimum cash stay but it does make rewards look a little less attractive.

See what you think.  If you are sitting on a lot of IHG Rewards Club points, this could be a good chance to use them for one memorable holiday.
