InterContinental Edinburgh The George hotel is now open

InterContinental Edinburgh is now ‘open’, although for this hotel the concept of ‘open’ is a complex one:

you can argue that it has re-opened, since it was originally an InterContinental until a few years ago when IHG sold it

you can argue that it never actually closed, since the rebranding from Principal The George – who bought the hotel off IHG and rebranded it, before IHG bought Principal and rebranded it again – has been done without the hotel closing its doors (the building has been a hotel since 1881)

InterContinental Edinburgh The George open

However you look at it, InterContinental is now back in the Scottish capital.  This is particularly good news for InterContinental Ambassador members who can now use their ‘free weekend night’ voucher at another UK venue.

We reviewed the benefits of InterContinental Ambassador here.  Principal spent a substantial amount of money renovating the hotel, and IHG has just done some additional work to reach ‘brand standards’, so it should look good.

As an IHG Rewards Club redemption, it costs 55,000 points per night.  This is a decent deal based on my 0.4p per point valuation for an IHG point.

You can find out more on the InterContinental Edinburgh website here.

HSBC offer 25% bonus avios for point transfer has always been very obscured. I have relied to headforpoints to alert me of the offer, as I have never received any email from them. I am going to transfer 5,000 points to BAEC first, then cross my fingers that the 25% bonus will come through before I transfer more.
I also made a mistake a couple of years ago in not tracking the expiry of points, and discovered HSBC wiped out over 10K points. Since then I have been diligent in keeping track of point expiry – 3 years, like SQ points. New transactions do not keep points from expiring.

Just logged onto my HSBC account and there is a note of the offer at the bottom of the credit card ‘page’ in ‘My Account’.

    • LaserBeams says:

      Hi Nigel,
I’ve logged in and out of my HSBC account a few times and still can’t see the 25% offer. Are you able to screenshot it so I can send them that as proof when I transfer?
      Thanks!

Hoping someone can help me out with this. My husband passed away suddenly 7 weeks ago and he was the main card holder for our Amex account enemy though I did most spending. There is a £10.5k bill which I am just about to pay but I’m not sure if the Avios will still be credited. Also there is a 241 voucher in his name. Will BA convert it to my name so that I can use it? I have applied for a new Amex Platinum card which should arrive this week.

    • Rob says:

      Sorry for your loss.

Bottom line – don’t tell Amex yet if you can. Make sure that points go across to the BA account first.

Avios – BA rules say that Avios die with the person. In reality if your probate solicitor writes to BA and say the points were left to you, they will transfer them.

Alternatively form a household account so you retain access to them and do not tell BA at all.

The 241 voucher is probably lost as cardholder must travel but you never know.

      • Kay Melville says:

Thanks for reply Rob. Amex already know and as I am paying the final bill I am hoping they will send the Avios to the account which is a household one. The bigger problem may be the 241 voucher. I’ll just have to go begging to BA!

    • Allan says:

Had success in transferring both Avios (no issue at all) and a 241 in this scenario, only stipulation was that the person it was transferred to had an active BA Amex linked to their BAEC account.

      • Jeremy I says:

Sorry to hear this Kay. My father passed away suddenly before Christmas and the Amex bereavement team were more than happy to pass his unused MR points over to my MR account.

        • Kay Melville says:

Thank you Jeremy, that’s good news. Fingers crossed!

      • Kay Melville says:

Thanks Allan, I have opened a new Amex account so hopefully my experience will work out as yours has.

  • jo says:

I don’t see anything on hsbc offer in my account. is it safe to go ahead and transfer?

  • Dave Logan says:

I called hsbc and they told me there was no bonus conversion, so it must be a targeted offer. Doh.

  • Dave Logan says:

Just logged in again and I see the “bonus offer”. Clearly their CS are clueless.

  • Nigel says:

Another question, hoping to use a Lloyds Upgrade voucher for flights for next July/August. Does anyone know if you can book the outbound flight with the voucher and then book the inbound flight later (when it becomes available) with the same voucher (travelling solo)?

  • Steve S says:

O/T but Bonus Avios related has anyone received the 40% bonus on Tesco conversions if you previously converted Shell points?
