How to use Tesco Clubcard points to book Hilton hotel rooms

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

With Avios no longer a Tesco Clubcard partner, one of the more interesting ways to use your Clubcard points for travel is to use them to book Hilton hotel rooms.

You can see details on this page of the Clubcard website.

Tesco and Hilton have made some positive changes to this redemption over the years:

you no longer have to book for at least two nights

you can now book certain hotels during the week, if that particular hotel chooses to participate

all Hilton brands (Hampton, Conrad etc) now participate – not just the main Hilton brand

Using Tesco Clubcard points to book Hilton hotels

These are all good changes, although you need to remember that this deal only covers hotels in the UK and Ireland.

There are other positive features about this deal:

rooms always include breakfast

all room categories are included, so if you need a bigger room or a suite then you can often book one, as long as you have enough Clubcard points

Even better, Tesco and Hilton now have a dedicated website (click here) for booking rooms online.

If it is a few years since you last used Clubcard points with Hilton, you may remember that you had to ring the call centre.  This was time consuming and – if you had a variety of hotels and dates to choose from – slow.  You no longer need to do this.

How to exchange your Clubcard points

You can exchange your Clubcard points on this website. £2.50 in Clubcard points will give you £7.50 to spend at Hilton Hotels UK & Ireland. Your tokens are emailed to you within 30 minutes and can then be used on the Tesco / Hilton booking website.

The tokens are valid for 6 months from the day you redeem. Bookings can be made up to four days in advance.

Do you still receive Hilton Honors points and status benefits on Clubcard bookings?

Yes, plus elite night credit.

Looking at HfP reader comments in recent months, you may discover some confusion over points earning if you pay for the entire room with vouchers.  You are due points on the full value of your room, so chase it up.

Are Hilton Hotels a good way to spend your Clubcard points?

It’s not bad as you receive 300% of the face value of your vouchers.

Note, though, that the price charged is the cancellable bed and breakfast rate. However, the booking you make will not be cancellable. This means that you are not getting a true 3x face value redemption with Hilton – you should be comparing the amount of vouchers required with the price of a non-cancellable bed and breakfast rate.

For example, if a refundable room was £150 and a non-refundable room was £120, the Clubcard rate would be £150.  As your room is actually non-refundable, however, you are really getting something worth £120.  Instead of getting 3x face value for your vouchers, you would be getting (£120 / £50) 2.4x.

You can check out pricing and availability on the Tesco / Hilton booking page here.

  • Tony says:

Maybe I’m missing something but the link to the dedicated site just has a list of “featured hotels”. There’s no way to search, and even if you select one of the featured hotels there’s no special Tesco rate listed. This is using a smartphone.

    • Number9 says:

I had same thing when I looked last week. I gave up in the end. I tried phone and iPad incase it was a tech thing but same on both.

  • Hilly says:

If you’re going to use Clubcard points for accommodation, hotels.com gives far more choice. I’m In a self catering place in Reydon Suffolk right now, thanks tesco

    • IanM says:

Errrr yes it does. Did you read the title of the article?

    • Blenz101 says:

But if you are going to stay in a Hilton anyway you are better to book direct and be awarded points and elite night credits.

  • Matt says:

“Bookings can be made 4 days in advance” – is that right?

    • Wally1976 says:

It actually says “up to” 4 days in advance! I assumed that was a typo?

      • Wally1976 says:

I think it should be that bookings need to be made AT LEAST 4 days in advance. Can anyone clarify?

  • Save East Coast Rewards says:

You list breakfast included as a positive, but is it? Gold and diamond get free breakfast and some people prefer to seek out breakfast locally rather than eat in the hotel. This means whether you want it or not you have to pay the breakfast inclusive rate with your points.

    • John says:

Exactly – it’s just a lower return on clubcard points if I’m forced to book the breakfast rate

    • the_real_a says:

Especially when many hiltons are still offering brown bags of plastic rubbish or a lukewarm gristle bacon sandwich. You really need to call the hotel to find out what they are offering.

  • TM says:

One may prefer to transfer to Virgin and then to HH Points at 1:1.5

  • Chris H says:

Has it ever been challenged in court that they are misleading customers by charging for a refundable rate, but not giving it?

  • the_real_a says:

You should always compare the same hotel and dates on hotels DOT com – I usually get much better value that way especially at low and mid markets hotels.
