British Airways trialling short-haul food pre-ordering in Europe

British Airways has launched a trial which allows Economy passengers on European short-haul flights to pre-order food.

The criteria for taking part in the trial seems, ahem, eclectic – the person who sent me the details has no short-haul flights booked at all!  Going through the booking process, it appears to be restricted to one daily flight to Malaga and one to Krakow.

British Airways food pre-order short haul

As you can see from the image above – click to enlarge – you do not have the full choice of the menu and must select from three meal deals.  I am guessing that this is an attempt to increase the average order value.

If you are invited onto the trial, your meal is free so do give it a go if you are on the relevant flights.  It isn’t clear why it was emailed to people who are not on the relevant flights though.

  • Dawn says:

O/T we arrived in Sydney a five days ago from Johannesburg in Business and are due 160 tier points which will push us up to Bronze. Does this take a long time to come through? We flew with Qantas.

    • Nick Burch says:

Some partner airlines only send through transactions once a week on a Wednesday. Check tomorrow! Others it takes 4-5 days. Even BA can take 3 days sometimes, though 1-2 is more typical for BA flights

      • Dawn says:

Thank you! We need it for our next domestic flight which means more baggage allowance!

        • ChrisC says:

Don’t rely on it coming through.

Even on BA flown flights it takes 2 days for the tier points to post and then another couple of days for the status change to come through.

That also assumes you have flown the 2 qualifying BA flights for Bronze (which people often forget about)

          • ChrisC says:

Mean to rely on it coming through quickly

Depends when your domestic flight is.

  • paulm says:

Ot, Amex offers, £50 of £250 at Hilton is back. Usual list of European properties.

  • BJ says:

OT: More travel/transport BS from the government with headline-grabbing figures designed to capture the imagination and votes of idiots.

    • Charlieface says:

If somebody can quite explain to me why rail lines cost so much I’d love to know.
I suppose it starts by using expensive consultants to do feasability reports when it could probably be done cheaper in-house, and carries on with the exorbitant cost of land (sold off cheap by BRB) which apparently gets an uplift of theoretical planning permission even if it’s in the green belt. Still, it’s really ridiculous how much engineering costs in this country.

  • Paul says:

Just a heads up that the parking charges which attract 250 extra points (worth at best £5) have more than doubled from the rates available at the end of December.
I have a booking for T5 short stay that cost £78 for half term week (just checked this and it’s not a mistake) and today is £166.

    • MattB says:

Not in scope for this offer but cheapest price for our summer trip is £134 for T3 business parking for 21 nights in Aug. Seems fair?

      • Shoestring says:

my wife got £114 for 22 nights from 1st Aug with Blue Circle (the old DriveFly) *Meet & Greet* @T3 through [MSE airport parking] link—>Holiday Extras, with a £10/ 1000 Avios discount to come (they pay out fine on Holiday Extras), you go all the way to payment with MSE link then drop the address bar into the new discount window

        • MattB says:

From previous experience and many others I know, I will never leave my car keys with any car park. Not worth it.

          • RussellH says:

I have used Meet + Greet a couple of times – at LBA and MAN – and it was OK. But I was investigating it yesterday for BHX and the reviews were consistently awful.

          • Shoestring says:

            we’ve used DriveFly M&G a lot since 2016 (often 8x a year at T3) – with no problems (touch wood 🙂 )

they sank to be subsumed/ replaced by Blue Circle, not sure if it was a prepack or if BC existed before DF disappeared

obvs your car is safer if you park it yourself & remove the keys – but M&G is very convenient and a lot cheaper unless you are willing to park it in some distant outfield carpark

so how to assess the risks of giving your keys to somebody else? the weakest link is a bad apple driver who disrespects your motor/ but BC survive on their reputation so you’d imagine the first thing they instil into their drivers is the importance of safe driving & looking after our cars

probably just as illogical to say I’ve had 20 perfect experiences therefore DF/ BC can be trusted fine – as it is to say somebody’s car had a scrape whilst in their care so they are useless

        • Lady London says:

Reference the other poster on this thread who has advised Blue Circle trashed his car and are not communicating.

      • Lady London says:

You might be able to take a big chunk off that by choosing one of the airport hotel park and pay options – “stay” or stay the night before you arrive and leave the car for the relevant number of days, all within 1 rate. Rob did an article a while back but the main chains mostly do it.

        • Lady London says:

Hey Rob if you’re feeling bored and if IHG’s apparent withdrawal of pointsbreaks has left a gap, from this thread it looks like a lot of people are currently planning their summer holidays and arranging parking at LHR/ other airports.

Could that excellent article you did a while back be brushed off and refreshed if there is a space? there have been some changes like that cheap “back door” parking option to the LHR car parks seems to have been closed down… and I know you did justpark also.

          • Rob says:

It will be dusted off but we tend to run it in June-ish before the main holiday season along with similar articles on currency etc.

          • Graeme says:

Don’t know about others Rob, but I tend to book my parking WAY further in advance than that.

          • Peter K says:

I’ve always thought the car parking article is run too late to take advantage of the info.
I’ve booked parking already (cancellable rate) for September and I’m sure I’m not the only one who books that far in advance.
I think running it twice a year would make sense, especially in the quiet (for news) winter months when people are booking their holidays for either the summer or next year’s winter sun.

          • Graeme says:

Peter – I booked for December last night!

          • Shoestring says:

not being a car owner, perhaps HFP doesn’t understand that the earlier you book parking, the cheaper it gets – and not a risk when ‘anytime’ cancellation charge adds on £1.50 to your booking

    • TGLoyalty says:

Dynamic pricing based upon supply/demand and I imagine time before it’s required.

I’ve got some unusually high quotes too right at the tail end of that week so will risk blue circle I think.

  • ChrisC says:

Don’t forget that LHR-HEL is an 80 tier point route flying in business.

Though Finnair doesn’t give a status level avios bonus like you would on the BA flight.

I’m booked on the AY A350 in a few months so looking forward to the flat bed even if it’s only for a few hours.

  • Ron says:

I think buy on board is terrible. A few weeks ago I was sitting in the first row of economy and the weren’t able to offer me ANY of the sandwiches from the menu as they had run out on the previous flight (although they admitted only a couple sandwiches had been loaded to begin with)

You might think pre-ordering would be a great solution. The problem is, an airplane sandwich is not a thing I plan to have as a meal. It happens when something else goes wrong and I don’t have time to eat before I get on the plane.

    • Shoestring says:

1000 Avios compo if you do an online complaint

    • memesweeper says:

      >>> an airplane sandwich is not a thing I plan to have as a meal <<<

I tend to agree Ron but several LCCs offer pre-purchasing now, including EasyJet and AirAsia, so I guess there’s some demand.

  • LewisB says:

OT: My IFE didn’t work on my JFK-LHR flight last night. Economy and blue. Already been deposited 10,000 avios.

  • Algor says:

Hilton spend £250 get £50 back on BAPP and gold.

Just in time as I have to pay £500+ bill today 🙂
