The Platinum Card from American Express comes with a lot of airport lounge access benefits:

You get two Priority Pass cards, each of which allows two people unlimited access to 1,300 airport lounges globally (so a family of four is covered)

You get access to all Plaza Premium lounges with a guest, even those not in Priority Pass, by showing your Platinum card

You get access to Delta lounges, when flying with Delta, by showing your Platinum card (no guests allowed)

You and your guests get access to American Express’s own network of Centurion airport lounges, which are primarily in the US but which is also coming to Heathrow Terminal 3 in mid 2020

You can access 13 other American Express-brand airport lounges in Stockholm, Delhi, Mumbai, Mexico City x 3, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Monterrey x 2 (Mexico, not CA!), Melbourne, Sydney and Toluca – full details are here

You also get Eurostar lounge access by showing your Platinum card.

You can learn more about these benefits in our full American Express Platinum review here.

You can also access select Lufthansa lounges with The Platinum Card

A lesser known benefit is the relatively recent deal that American Express has with Lufthansa in Germany.

Here are the participating lounges if you are flying Economy:

Frankfurt: Business Lounge, T1 Concourse B by Gates B44-B48

Frankfurt: Business Lounge, T1 Concourse B by Gates B24-B28

Munich: Business Lounge, Terminal 2 Satellite (Non-Schengen area)

Munich: Business Lounge, Terminal 2 Satellite (Schengen area)

Here are the additional participating lounges if you are flying Business:

Frankfurt: Senator Lounge, T1 Concourse B

Munich: Senator Lounge, Terminal 2 Satellite (Non-Schengen area)

Munich:  Senator Lounge, Terminal 2 Satellite (Schengen area)

Access is NOT a total free-for-all:

You must be flying on a Lufthansa Group airline (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian)

You cannot bring a guest, although obviously your partner can come with you if they have a free supplementary Platinum card on your account

If you have a Centurion Card, you can also access the First Class lounges in the satellite area of T2 in Munich Airport and T1 Concourse B in Frankfurt Airport and there are no rules over the class of your ticket.

The offer is rolled over year to year.  At present, American Express is only guaranteeing that it will continue to run until 31st March 2020.  It has been rolled over in the past, however, so it may well carry on.

  1. You can also access Virgin Australia lounges (owned and operated) in Australia with a U.K. Amex Platinum card.

  2. How do third party lounged know if the Amex card is still active ?

  3. Just wondering how long does the priority pass take to arrive? I want to try to time this strategically for the 24 months bonus and to get best use out of the lounge on a big trip!

  4. Are all the lounge benefits also applicable to the Amex Business Platinum card?

  5. Hi. Can someone clarify re Priority Pass issued with Amex plat – do you get 2 PP per application (same name on each PP card) OR one PP for main and one named for named supplementary card holder?

    TIA

  6. Chris Jones says:

If your in Vienna Airport also flash your platinum to get into the fast lane at security.

  7. They don’t really advertise the benefit well do they.
Have never heard of this until now and follow the miles and points game very closely! Thanks Rob for giving us the article 🙂

  8. For the plats £575 annual fee, is this charged from day one or at day 364? If it is a charge card and it is from day one? would that then mean I have to pay £575 immediately then get it refunded pro-rata? I am going on holiday and was thinking just to open it for a month or two. Thanks

  9. Would anyone be kind enough to advise re Amex Plat hire car excess please?
With Amex platinum, do I automatically get car hire EXCESS cover? Does car have to be hired in name of main cardholder? Does car hire have to be purchased with Amex Plat? Is Australia covered?
    Thanks

    • Car hire cover is part of the Plat Insurance benefit, if your card has been issued since 2019 remember to enrol for the benefit.

You do not need to pay with the Plat card and cover is provided where you can refuse any excess cover offered by the hire company.

The card holder does not need to be the hirer but must be named on the rental agreement and the cover will apply for up to five named drivers, you can only cover one agreement at a time though. This is one to watch as some hire companies allow additional drivers but do not automatically show them on the hire document, had to have the wife added at the desk a couple of times in Oz.

I have used it for cover many times in Oz, although I have never claimed the companies have no issue when you mention the card as reason for declining their excess cover.

  10. Access to the Frankfurt lounges is super handy when flying to London but a word of caution: they are in the non Schengen area. You cannot access any of the lounges in the Schengen area. You could go to the non Schengen lounge and go back to Schengen when it’s time to board. I tried it once when I had time to kill. It takes forever and involves taking a shuttle bus and then walking through more or less the whole terminal. You cannot go back the way you cake as the passport control point to get into B non Schengen only operates one way.

    • Oh damn, that’s really annoying. I’ve got an upcoming trip Vienna connecting in FRA and was hoping to make use of this 🙁

  11. Seems Rhys is rubbing off on you Rob!
