Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Win 5,000 Heathrow Rewards points with ‘Green Points’ – virtually no entries so far

Heathrow Rewards has launched a new promotion to encourage you to reuse your clear plastic liquids bag.

There is a slight snag.  You can only take part if you are reusing an official Heathrow clear plastic liquids bag, which comes with a QR code printed on the front.  This means you need to get rid of your current bag, which is not the environmental message they want to send out.

At Terminal 5 – and ONLY at Terminal 5 – you should scan the QR code on your offical Heathrow liquids bag using your smartphone each time you use it.

Heathrow Rewards

Heathrow is donating 1p to Care International for every scanned bag.  If your bag is scanned three times before 31st March, you will be entered into a competition to win 5,000 Heathrow Rewards points.  These can be converted into 5,000 Avios or other airline miles, or a £50 Heathrow shopping voucher.

As you can see here:

….. the initiative has not taken off so far.  It is very possible that NO-ONE has yet scanned their bag three times.  If you are flying from Terminal 5 on three occasions by 31st March you should be in with a good chance of winning.

You’ll also be helping to boost the donation to Care International beyond the current total of 22p.

You can find full details of the Green Points initiative here (log-in required).

If you’re not a member of the scheme yet, you can find out how Heathrow Rewards works in this article.

Signed my old man up for the card a few weeks ago as it’s been just over 24 months since his last Amex card. No news yet on lower earning rates on his account so are recent applications ‘grandfathered’ for a certain amount of time?

    • Anna says:

The way I read it is that all existing Ts and Cs will be honoured until Feb 26th when the changes kick in.

      • Peter K says:

I applied after the letter was sent out to existing card holders. I saw nothing in the t&c’s when I applied to say it will change on the 26th and I have received no correspondence to say it will do so I’m assuming it will stay at it is. If not then I will politely be contacting Amex.

      • Simon says:

But wouldn’t Amex have to notify cardholders of a change in the terms and conditions? I have received notification but my wife, who recently signed up for the card, has not.

        • Peter K says:

Indeed they would. That is why I would politely ring them.

          • EwanG says:

There will be a cut-off on their data for existing card customers who they have already provided the new terms to (the Notice of Variation). Anyone who signed up for a card since that data cut will get their NoV in a mop-up exercise, which will give them the required notice period of the changes.

Hopefully they will forget or their famous IT…

    • Charlieface says:

Presumably if he has grandchildren then he’s grandfathered…
(Yes I know what it really means)

  • TGLoyalty says:

Went through T5 on Wednesday and no QR on the liquids bag I picked up at south security

    • Andrew says:

Checked my bag from last weekend via North Security T5. No QR Code on it.

Was a bit of a shame, the IAD one I had had given up after about 5 years.

I can transfer avios from Iberia to BA before, then suddenly one day, cannot do it.

  • Georges says:

Rob, it has always been like that. Anyone with a household account cannot transfer from Iberia to BA, the facility is blocked. Whether that is by design or a glitch that they’ve never fixed I don’t know. But a while ago I’m sure that you published an article on how to get around this by transferring via an Aer Lingus Avios account. It’s very complicated and certainly not for the faint hearted but it worked as I had to do it for a friend of mine who was stuck with a 300,000 Avios purchase in his Iberia account.

    • Genghis says:

It’s not that hard. I’m in a BAEC HHA. I logged into avios.com on Friday, pulled from Iberia, pushed to BAEC.

    • Rob says:

      That’s always been the case:

IB to BA HHA – not allowed
Iberia to Avios.com to BA HHA – allowed

But the latter has started to be troublesome …..

      • Shoestring says:

        it’s *always* user error

use http://www.avios.com/gb/en/signin as the middleman and it works fine with HHAs

        • Genghis says:

Exactly. I’ve not had a problem, but I know what to do. User error.

          • Peter K says:

Or partial user error. Mrs K could move avios merrily with the old avios.com accounts, not now with a new Aer Club one. It seems the problem is with her details in Iberia however, which she has not changed. Go figure.

          • Smith says:

Another data point in case it helps anyone struggling with an Iberia – Avios transfer:
I had problems transferring from my Iberia Plus account to Avios account this weekend (although it has been successful in past).
The problem was in a (new) mismatch with my Iberia Plus personal details and my Avios personal details: for some reason Iberia had a new ‘second surname’ field for me which duplicated my surname so I was now Robert Smith Smith.
So: worth checking your personal details match.
Avios online chat agent was able to resolve as a one-off but really Iberia need to make the correction.

      • Georges says:

Sorry Rob, I read too quickly. G.

  • Will says:

For Iberia, you just need to change the language to Spain – English and it gives you the Euro prices

  • MT says:

To change the pricing just change your region to Spain (English), or Ireland. For some reason anywhere outside the Eurozone gets terrible USD pricing.

  • Roger says:

OT – Anyone used People’s Energy as energy supplier?
    Any feedback

    • Andrew says:

      Nope.

But if you are supplied by Octopus Energy, you can pay their bills online by using an Amex Card – even though they say Debit Card Only.

      • BJ says:

Datapoint: E.om no longer accepting amex. And for anybody who may not know, E.on refunds go back to payment cards even on account closure. Therefore, if anybody is in the position they want to avoid or minimise such then they should reduce their direct debit to the minimum allowed which is £2.

    • avstar says:

      avoid.

thy are a different company to when first launched, and if you check recent reviews you will see systemic issues, some of which are bordering on illegality re unauthorised direct debit withdrawals etc

    • the_real_a says:

Very cheap. No issues other than they cannot read our smart meter.

    • Crafty says:

      Yes. Fine.

  • Chelseafi says:

Received my ‘SPG’ card yesterday and it’s the new look card branded Marriott

    • Paul says:

+1. Lets hope the reduced earning rate, sign up bonus etc has not already kicked in prematurely for these cards.
