Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Win 5,000 Heathrow Rewards points with ‘Green Points’ – virtually no entries so far

Heathrow Rewards has launched a new promotion to encourage you to reuse your clear plastic liquids bag.

There is a slight snag.  You can only take part if you are reusing an official Heathrow clear plastic liquids bag, which comes with a QR code printed on the front.  This means you need to get rid of your current bag, which is not the environmental message they want to send out.

At Terminal 5 – and ONLY at Terminal 5 – you should scan the QR code on your offical Heathrow liquids bag using your smartphone each time you use it.

Heathrow Rewards

Heathrow is donating 1p to Care International for every scanned bag.  If your bag is scanned three times before 31st March, you will be entered into a competition to win 5,000 Heathrow Rewards points.  These can be converted into 5,000 Avios or other airline miles, or a £50 Heathrow shopping voucher.

As you can see here:

….. the initiative has not taken off so far.  It is very possible that NO-ONE has yet scanned their bag three times.  If you are flying from Terminal 5 on three occasions by 31st March you should be in with a good chance of winning.

You’ll also be helping to boost the donation to Care International beyond the current total of 22p.

You can find full details of the Green Points initiative here (log-in required).

If you’re not a member of the scheme yet, you can find out how Heathrow Rewards works in this article.

    Hi

Re difficulty transferring out of Avios to BA if you have a household account. I had this problem which I understand only occurs if you have a household account both in Avios and with BA. Hope this helps.

    • Rob says:

There’s no such thing as an avios.com (ie Aer Lingus or Vueling) HHA though ….

  • Dawn says:

I’ve also not been able to transfer out of Avios to BA and I have a household account with BA only.

  • memesweeper says:

I’m not knocking you for covering it @rob but a ‘green’ competition you can only enter by flying three times and using a new plastic bag? Someone didn’t think that through… surely there has to be a better way to promote bag reuse?

    • Peter K says:

I suppose from LHR’s point of view, they are aiming it at frequent flyers who will likely make those 3 trips on that time span ands also use the most clear bags.
It’s not a good enough prize to tempt anyone to fly extra to enter it I suspect.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Though even better when no one can find bags with a QR code on them.

      • Doug M says:

I’d guess frequent flyers are the least likely to be messing abut at the airport loading a plastic bag. They’re the ones that come prepared and don’t create queues whilst they organise themselves at the last minute.

    • Lady London says:

It’s just a promo apparently designed purely to make them look ‘green’. Or even just to tick some KPI box. Otherwise the promotion would be realistically achievable and it would be better publicised.

Not seen this mentioned before (apologies if old news). New Citigold investment accounts get up to 100k Avios. 50k Avios for £150k investment balance or 100k Avios for £650k investment balance. Probs not for most but thought worth mentioning in case helpful to anyone

    • Rob says:

It’s been running for a couple of years, we do the occasional article on it. Never heard of anyone who did it though!

    • Doug M says:

Anecdotally Citi have a habit of closing accounts they don’t make money from. Often dressed up as security reasons. YMMV.

  • ScienceTeacher says:

Went through T5 this morning and checked at both normal and fast track security for the bags, both at North and South. Nobody had heard of them!

  • Melonsr Bige says:

Not a chance of getting 3 points by next month

  • L Allen says:

Scan the bag QR code with what? The Heathrow Rewards app or any QR code scanning app? The info in the HR app is typically obtuse and useless!

  • David says:

Change IB to the Spanish site to buy the Avios in Euros. Alternatively try using a VPN.

    • Shoestring says:

      yep – Espana-Espanol

      • Darren says:

Do you have to have any avios in the Iberia Plus acc already? Just opened an acc and have zero in it, but the purchase avios option in the menu takes me back to the Iberia front page?

        • Shoestring says:

I don’t think so – but you should definitely change the settings to Espana-Espanol

        • Secret Squirrel says:

Aslong as your IB account is atleast 3x months old, you do not need any points to start with.

          • Darren says:

I thought it was 90 days to transfer. So its 90 days before you can purchase?

          • Secret Squirrel says:

            @Darren,
No, I’m sure you can purchase on a new account but like you said 90x days until transfer.
