British Airways will refund ALL flights to 31st May for a voucher – but should you say no?

Finally ….. British Airways has seen the light and is now allowing you to cancel ALL flights up to 31st May, in return for a travel voucher.

However …. I am not convinced you should accept.

Let me explain.

Here is the British Airways ‘Book With Confidence’ website.

These are the new rules:

If you are travelling between 14th March and 31st May, you can refund your flight for a British Airways e-voucher irrespective of when you booked.  No refunds are on offer for flights beyond 31st May.

If you are travelling between 1st June and 31st December 2020, you can refund your flight for a British Airways e-voucher if you booked between 3rd March and 31st May

The voucher is valid for 12 months from the date of your original flight

The voucher can be used on any route, not necessarily the one you originally booked

This applies to both British Airways marketed flights and BA Holidays bookings, although Comair and SUN-AIR are exempt

You cannot claim if you have already started your journey

Flight cancellations can be made until the close of check-in, whilst BA Holidays bookings must be cancelled within 48 hours of departure

Anyone who has already cancelled their booking and lost money cannot retrospectively request a voucher

You can also change your flight dates without any change fees, although you have to pay the fare difference.

But …. but …. but …. perhaps you should wait?

I know this sounds contrarian.  Many of you have been on tenterhooks waiting for a decision like this to allow you to cancel your trip.

And yet ….

The EU has agreed the terms of a deal to allow airlines to cancel flights without losing their slots.

Next week, British Airways is likely cut anything from 25% to 100% of its scheduled flights – probably around 50% given what Lufthansa is doing.   If your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a full refund IN CASH.  No messing around with e-vouchers.

By taking the refund now, you are also giving up your right to potential EC261 compensation if you were due to travel within 14 days of the cancellation being made.

Unless you are travelling in the next 4-5 days, you might want to think about waiting in case you end up missing out on a full cash refund.

Of course, there is also a risk that British Airways withdraws this offer and you can no longer refund your ticket at all.

It’s up to you.

    I just tried to get a refund for a cancelled flight on BA’s website and all it then took me to is a voucher page. This despite the main page saying I could cancel for a full refund. Something odd going on…

        Rob, could you include this scenario: As I am being given a voucher ( BA tell me it’s on its way) can I ask for it to be converted into cash? No answer on gold line and no opportunity to ask for refund. Initially I-was quite OK with a voucher, but I’ve changed my mind!

          Clearly you’ve accepted the voucher and your flight will be cancelled …. could be tricky to change.

      Exact same thing happened to me. Flight cancelled, the page says I can get a refund but it keeps taking me to a voucher page instead

    BA’s system, even when they cancel are flight is now set up to offer a voucher on line. It’s deceptive.

    My return flight from New York with BA in April is cancelled, but the link to “cancel and refund” only takes me to a page to get a flight voucher…Looks like I will have to spend painful hours in a queue trying to resolve this…

    i got a sms stating that my BA flight has been cancelled. when i go to the manage my booking it gives me 3 options. when i clicked the option to request for a full refund incl of taxes back to my bank account , it takes me to the ONLY option to get a travel voucher. i do not want a travel voucher and a full refund to my bak=nk account.
    However even when i tried to call their customer service number it gets discoonected after taking em through a series of options and says that i cannot do it because BA is getting too many calls.
    could you please suggest what i should do?

      Hi, I have the same issue with a flight that today has been cancelled. Very little information on-line on what a ‘voucher’ is actually worth. I did get through (after 1hour+ waiting in a queue), only to be told that they wouldn’t even discuss the options until 72 hours before the flight is due to leave. So I am none the wiser as to what to do..

    I had a flight leaving in two days time that has been cancelled. Same problem with web site so called 020 3250 0145 at lunchtime and selected option 1 for bookings with Avios. Call was answered within 3 minutes and no problems getting a cancellation. Whole process took less than 8 minutes in total. Well done BA.

    Is there somewhere to file a consumer complaint for BAs decepitive voucher tactics? I have been rebooked from a cancelled flight 10April and cannot get a full refund only a voucher. Their call center will hang up on you.

        there’s no need to complain, despite BA effectively breaking the T&Cs (and EC261) by making it difficult to get a refund

        just use the refund workaround in today’s workaround thread and no need to phone etc, takes maybe 2 minutes and even an old frat like yours truly can turn off Javascript then turn it on again
