British Airways will refund ALL flights to 31st May for a voucher – but should you say no?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Finally ….. British Airways has seen the light and is now allowing you to cancel ALL flights up to 31st May, in return for a travel voucher.

However …. I am not convinced you should accept.

Let me explain.

Here is the British Airways ‘Book With Confidence’ website.

British Airways BA 777X 777 9X

These are the new rules:

If you are travelling between 14th March and 31st May, you can refund your flight for a British Airways e-voucher irrespective of when you booked.  No refunds are on offer for flights beyond 31st May.

If you are travelling between 1st June and 31st December 2020, you can refund your flight for a British Airways e-voucher if you booked between 3rd March and 31st May

The voucher is valid for 12 months from the date of your original flight

The voucher can be used on any route, not necessarily the one you originally booked

This applies to both British Airways marketed flights and BA Holidays bookings, although Comair and SUN-AIR are exempt

You cannot claim if you have already started your journey

Flight cancellations can be made until the close of check-in, whilst BA Holidays bookings must be cancelled within 48 hours of departure

Anyone who has already cancelled their booking and lost money cannot retrospectively request a voucher

You can also change your flight dates without any change fees, although you have to pay the fare difference.

The small print on how the voucher works is on the ‘Book With Confidence’ website.

British Airways Book With Confidence

But … but … but … perhaps you should wait?

I know this sounds contrarian.  Many of you have been on tenterhooks waiting for a decision like this to allow you to cancel your trip.

And yet ….

The EU has agreed the terms of a deal to allow airlines to cancel flights without losing their slots.

Next week, British Airways is likely cut anything from 25% to 100% of its scheduled flights – probably around 50% given what Lufthansa is doing.   If your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a full refund IN CASH.  No messing around with e-vouchers.

By taking the refund now, you are also giving up your right to potential EC261 compensation if you were due to travel within 14 days of the cancellation being made.

Unless you are travelling in the next 4-5 days, you might want to think about waiting in case you end up missing out on a full cash refund.

Of course, there is also a risk that British Airways withdraws this offer and you can no longer refund your ticket at all.

It’s up to you.

  • Alan says:

Due to fly to MIA on Tuesday, but it’s a holiday booking, so I will need to pull the trigger on the voucher tomorrow or risk having to go or losing the money, if they don’t pull the fight.

Prefer the cash refund and potentially EC261 but voucher looks the best option unless they cancel today?

    • Shoestring says:

USA will react to the Covid-19 statistics, which in UK are released at 2pm or soon after

my gut feeling is that today’s numbers will be a lot worse than Friday’s, then Sunday’s worse still – and that US will react after Sunday’s data, probably Sunday evening UK

and even then, there might be 1 or 2 days’ grace

    • AJA says:

Alan remember if you do choose to cancel and take the voucher that it is only for the flights. Any money paid for hotels or experiences is lost unless it was a flexible/refundable hotel booking.

  • Roger says:

    BA status nearly qualified

I have five BA flights to complete (2 weekends) trips would have achieved Silver.
Now due to current flight situation flying to Spain is not possible hence may not qualify.

Any idea what is BA plan for status qualifification?

  • Nicola Walton says:

Same topic but Virgin. We had a flight booked to New Orleans in April which EPA’s booked on 24 Feb, we we taking a cruise. On Monday this week we amended the flight to return earlier as decoded a cruise wasn’t such a good idea! We got charged £719 to change flight, on Wednesday we received a piece of mind email saying for flights booked before 4th March there would be no charge to change! We are not happy about this!
At moment we are thinking we will not be able to travel at all so hopefully Virgin will do the same as BA.

  • Godfrey Wardle says:

How will this impact on Avios reward bookings made with a BA Amex 2-4-1 voucher? Will the £35 cancellation charge be waived and the voucher extended (mine expires on our date of travel, 29 April).

    • Polly says:

You just have to call in to have the voucher extended. Some people are reporting positive results on this..good luck

  • Anna says:

I am flying F into Miami and Y out of Grand Cayman in April. Would have been in a mess if either nation banned UK travellers. 5 am today I saw 6 x J award seats had appeared to GCM so bagged 3 of them. Now waiting to see – GCM is threatening to ban US and UK visitors (they have banned all cruise ships for 60 days), however the US makes up 90% if their tourism so just banning them would make a huge difference! But poised to be doing a lot of cancelling the week before our travel date…

    • Shoestring says:

and some people think it’s a bad idea to hold a big chunk of 1p Avios in credit just in case!

      • Anna says:

Quite, plus we fortuitously had a spare companion voucher which has saved us 75,000 Avios.

      • The Original Nick says:

Morning all. @ Harry, I have my CC points from Bagpuss’s insurance. Should I exchange into faster vouchers before I cancel because Bagpuss has been given away to a family friend as our Dog didn’t except him.

        • The Original Nick says:

I’m sorry I can’t remember how CC works as I haven’t used them since the 3V Giftcard good old days.

        • Shoestring says:

I don’t think they’ll get taken away now, more flexible to leave them as CC points as you get 2 years to think about spending them

which reminds me: we have CC points expiring in May so little job this weekend: buy some £2.50 Avios and bank the change with new 2 years’ expiry

  • Dean says:

Do you know what happens if you booked with Avios and a companion voucher and wish to cancel?

    • Anna says:

Normal cancellation terms. This must have been asked (and answered) about 100 times in the past few days!

      • Lady London says:

I think the number of times that question has been asked and answered – is coming close to the number of times our all-time winner “Will I lose my voucher from Amex if I cancel the Amex card I earned it on, Amex told me I will lose it” has been asked and answered

        • Polly says:

Seriously, these repeated same questions are driving me mad.
Maybe time for Rob to put a couple of FAQs on the top of his master page, to save repeated answers..and advise people to read the comments before posting. Goodwill answers only extends so far, when repeating yourselves so much.
Everyone being so helpful on here atm, but cancelled holidays are really only a 1st world problem.
Your health is far more important. Keep washing those hands.
Off to Aldi, Lidl and Morrisons on a loo roll hunt. Our 6 monthly regular order has disappeared! They think it was stolen between despatch and arrival. All 108 rolls!
Keep washing those hands, even if no soap, water disrupts the virus.
          And stay safe all.
LL, agree with you, flour very useful!

  • AmandaB says:

    Any thoughts on this situation:

    Flights booked 2-4-1 with Avios
Outbound to Miami is flown. Now the cruise is returning to Miami and suspended.
Return flight is not until 24th March.
Would prefer to fly home sooner, but can’t talk to BA as flight not within 72 hours.
Will the change my booking link on BA work for an Avios flight? There is availability from Tuesday
Asking for a friend who is panicking!!
I would just enjoy the USA and stay till 24th 😎

    • Anna says:

I don’t think you can change the inbound online once the outbound is flown. Have you tried to contact your insurance provider to ask if they will fly you home early? I would also be tempted to sit it out but UK visitors may be banned any day now so a lot of people will be looking to leave if so.

  • John Dodd says:

I have a flight to Singapore in the 31st March so not yet 14 days but on my executive page they are offering a full cash refunds. It does not mention Avios. I think I will take the cash and see about the Avios later

    • Anna says:

? If it’s an Avios flight you can cancel anyway up to 24 hours before and get back Avios plus fees minus £35 pp.

      • Polly says:

Anna, just how many times have you kindly answered that question. You are very kind….

Out of interest, and to get away from corona virus, what plans do you have to occupy yourself post retirement? P
