Why is British Airways deliberately blocking online cash refunds for Avios BA flight bookings?

One topic has dominated my inbox and the HFP comments over the last couple of days – the withdrawal by British Airways of the ability to refund an Avios flight online for cash.

EDIT:  We have a found a way to get around BA’s block and to allow a cash cancellation.  This article shows how.

If you have a British Airways booking made for cash then you can, under the BA ‘Book with Confidence’ guarantee, refund it in return for a British Airways voucher.  This voucher is valid for 12 months from the date of the flight which you had to cancel.

This policy is for people who are holding non-refundable flight tickets.  It has NOTHING to do with Avios bookings.

Any Avios bookings you hold were made under the standard British Airways rules.  These allow you to cancel your flight up to 24 hours before departure in return for a full CASH refund of your taxes and charges, plus the return of your Avios.  A fee of £35 per person is payable.

These rules have not changed, and indeed it is debatable that they could be changed retrospectively.

What happens when you try to cancel an Avios booking online?

If you go onto ba.com and try to cancel an Avios redemption, this is the page you are taken to:

Why is British Airways deliberately blocking online cash refunds for Avios bookings?

If your flight is one which is unlikely to operate, you may not see this.  You may just see your cancellation options greyed out.

This is the form you fill in to receive credit for a CASH flight.  It is NOT designed to be used by holders of Avios redemptions.

It appears that BA is deliberately trying to encourage holders of Avios tickets to accept a 12-month travel voucher, even though they are legally entitled to a cash refund.

If you ring British Airways, you WILL receive your cash refund.

Unfortunately, you are putting extra pressure on the call centre by doing this and stopping people who need immediate help from getting through.  This is a situation of BA’s own making, however.

People are getting the same problem when a flight is cancelled

I have also heard a similar story from readers whose flights have been cancelled.

Instead of triggering an immediate cash refund, they are directed to the same page on ba.com where they are asked to request the ‘Future Travel Voucher’.

Again, you do NOT need to do this.  If your flight is cancelled and BA only sends you a link to the voucher claim form, you need to get on the phone and request cash instead.

There is one caveat to this ….

If you have an Avios booking and you cancel it, you lose any money you have paid for seat reservations.  This could be substantial.

My understanding – although I am not 100% sure about this – is that if you take the travel voucher then it will include a credit for seat reservation fees, either as part of the voucher or as a marker to allow you free seat reservations in the future.

Don’t try to call BA if you can help it

It is frustrating that British Airways is making you call their overrun call centres in order to get the cash refunds to which you are legally entitled.

However …. there is no rush.  Unless you are trying to cancel an Avios booking for immediate travel, there is nothing to lose by holding off.  Once British Airways grounds the bulk of its fleet in the next week or so, there will hopefully be a period when it is easier to get through and fewer people are in need of urgent assistance.

  • Dennis Saunders says:

Reading the article now has worried me, I tried to cancel my Avios flight for early June (online)via the BA Exec Club 2 days ago, however I was presented with this and did this but it wasnt clear that I cancelled the flight. I thought the voucher screen was related to the companion voucher! I rang yesterday and got through very quickly and indicated that I did not think I had cancelled the flight. They indicated that what I had done would cancel the flight and in time get a cash refund (less 2*£35 charge).
However, I may have just been fobbed off!

  • Anna says:

OT but has BA stopped releasing award seats for next year? Only showing up to March 5th 2021 on various routes. I smell a devaluation coming…

    • Nick says:

I emailed You First regarding this as they stated they have temporarily stopped Avios Reward Seat. It’s not very helpful when they’ve only extended my voucher for 6 months after cancelling my First Class redemption. Hopefully it’ll sort itself out.

      • Anna says:

They wouldn’t extend my 2 4 1 voucher, said I had to contact BAEC at a later date!

  • xcalx says:

Maybe more people would be agreeable to a voucher if it wasn’t so restrictive, say 2 yrs, 3 yrs validity.

    • Jeff says:

Agreed. I’ve been offered a voucher from Air Europa and that’s only valid until the end of the year and therefore only an 8 month extension.

      • xcalx says:

Same here with Iberia 31st Dec 2020, although I am hanging on hoping for a cancelation. I already have all our flights for this year booked so zero chance of using a voucher.

    • Marc says:

      +1 Totally Agree

  • Anna says:

I am now getting a message that the person who made my booking needs to log into their account to change/cancel, OH getting the same, so not even getting voucher option! Looks like the IT has got even worse overnight 🤦‍♀️

    • Rob says:

This has always been the case – only the person who booked can trigger the cancellation, and they must be logged in.

      • Anna says:

We got the message whichever of us logged in, but turning off the Java and trying again seemed to solve it and we could then get to the cancellation screen.

    • Relaxo says:

I had this issue when using the app & mobile. Worked fine by logging onto deskptop

  • Angelo says:

We still had a couple of seats on a flight to Nice for today that we really expected BA to cancel. As they hadn’t by Tuesday, we thought it best to cancel ourselves. On phoning the call centre we also insisted we would not pay the £35 per person cancellation fee as clearly the travel situation had worsened to the extent that BA should really have cancelled the flight. I had to escalate the matter but it was sorted to my satisfaction in the end. These are unprecedented times and frankly the rule books might as well be thrown away as we have to create new ones based on pragmatism and fairness.

  • Russ says:

“However …. there is no rush. Unless you are trying to cancel an Avios booking for immediate travel, there is nothing to lose by holding off. Once British Airways grounds the bulk of its fleet in the next week or so”

…they will lay off their staff.

  • Simon Cross says:

They are simply daft- since Avios flights are in any case cancellable to leave the option on the site wouldsave them masses of hassle and probably get them the £35 cancellation fee as well whereas if one calls then you can definitey insist that the £35 feeis not charged as it is of course BA who has cancelled the flights.

Alternatively why not just automatically refund the Avios and taxes when an Avios booking is cancelled.

Anyone know what happens if I cant reach the call centre before the flight date? How do i then get my Avios and money back?

    • Shoestring says:

they can’t do automatic refunds when a flight is cancelled a that’s against the law (EC261)

you are entitled to be re-ticketed at no cost to yourself and that will suit some people if the fare is now higher in cash terms or not available as a reward flight

  • Ian S says:

My outbound LHR-BOM flight has been cancelled with 10 days notice (even though India cancelled visas almost 3wks ahead). My inbound flight is still currently flying. We booked with Avios and AmEx241 but if we just cancel we’ll lose 241 as expires before being usable again. Are we entitled to EC261 compensation (which would balance out loss of 241)?

    • Anna says:

Very unlikely to get compensation as “extraordinary circs” but you can request that BA extend your 2 4 1.
