Workaround found. How to trigger an online British Airways flight refund using Google Chrome

Our main article today is about BA’s unwillingness to let you claim an online cash refund for an Avios flight.

We have now found a way of triggering a cash refund – as opposed to a voucher – without calling British Airways (and waiting hours in the queue …..)

This next chunk of text is for getting a refund of your taxes on Avios bookings which have not yet been cancelled by BA.

For a refund on a CASH or Avios BA flight booking which has been cancelled, scroll down this page and read the PS. at the bottom.

If you have a CASH BA flight booking which is NOT showing as cancelled, do NOT follow any of the advice on this page.  You are not yet able to get a cash refund.  You either need to accept the British Airways travel voucher offered or wait until your flight is cancelled and then follow the steps above.

To be clear:

Got an Avios booking which is not yet cancelled?  Read on

Got an Avios booking which is cancelled?  Go to the PS at the bottom

Got a cash booking which is cancelled?  Go to the PS at the bottom

Got a cash booking which is not yet cancelled?   Sorry, there is no way of getting a cash refund.  You need to accept the BA voucher or wait for your flight to be cancelled.

How can you stop British Airways forcing a flight voucher on you?

In summary ….. if you turn off JavaScript in Google Chrome then ba.com will take you to the full cancellation page.

Here’s proof it works:

How to trigger an online Avios flight refund using Google Chrome

This is how to do it, using the Google Chrome broswer.

Go into ‘Manage My Booking’ on ba.com and select ‘Cancellation options for this booking’.  You must be logged in and using the BA account of the person who booked, ie the person who is named on the confirmation email.

You are taken to the ‘consent’ screen:

How to trigger an online Avios flight refund using Google Chrome

Do NOT continue the process, as you will only be taken to the ‘Future Travel Voucher’ page which you don’t want.  In order to cancel, you need to first disable JavaScript in Chrome.  (If you are not using Chrome, you need to find out how your browser handles JavaScript.)

This is how you do it:

Click the ‘three dots’ in the top right corner of Chrome

Scroll down to ‘Settings’ and click – this opens a new ‘Settings’ page

Click ‘Privacy & Security’ in the left menu – this brings the ‘Privacy & Security’ section to the top

Click ‘Site Settings’ in the ‘Privacy & Security’ section

Scroll down to the ‘Permissions’ section and click ‘JavaScript’

Turn off JavaScript by toggling the ‘Allowed’ button

Do NOT close the window as you need to turn it back on later.  Switch back to the window where you have the ba.com ‘Consent’ page open.  Tick the ‘Please tick here’ box and click ‘Continue’.

You will now be on the standard cash cancellation screen.

Turn JavaScript back on.

You can cancel your booking for a full cash refund of your taxes, and with your Avios returned.

But don’t forget ….

You will be still be paying the £35 per person cancellation fee on a long-haul booking.  If you want to avoid this, you need to wait until BA cancels your flight automatically, assuming it does not operate.

If you paid for seat selection, you LOSE this money if you cancel.  You may prefer to take the travel voucher as I believe the seat selection value is retained, either as part of the voucher or as a credit for free seat selection when you rebook.

PS.  How to get a refund for a CASH British Airways booking

If you are looking to refund a CASH booking which has already been cancelled, this is an alternative set of steps:

1) Go into Manage My Booking on ba.com and select the flight shown as cancelled

2) Go into your browser’s settings and disable JavaScript – for Chrome, follow the instructions I outlined earlier in this article for cancelling an Avios booking

3) Go back to ‘Manage My Booking’ and click on the ‘Cancel and Refund’ button which is just under the cancellation notice

4) Confirm that you now see the correct cash refund form and not the voucher refund form

5) Turn JavaScript back on in your browser settings

6) Click on the “Yes” radio button to select that you are a person in the booking

7) When nothing happens press “Enter” on your keyboard. (this works in Firefox and Chrome). The page refreshes and shows an error at the top of the page “email address invalid”

8) Click on the “Yes” radio button again

9) Complete and submit the form

You will see this screen:

British Airways cancellation

For absolute clarity, do NOT cancel a CASH flight if you have not received an email from British Airways saying that your flight is cancelled.  If your flight is still showing as operating, cancelling means you lose EVERYTHING except a nominal amount in taxes.

Data point: Avios flights in April cancelled today and the web trick didn’t work. Called BA Hong Kong customer service and waited for 5 mins, avios returned right away and I was told the money may take up to 4 weeks.

  • Andrew W says:

Just been on the phone to BA to refund my Avios booking. Some information that may help others:
At 0830, it took 25 minutes queuing before an operator answered. Don’t press ‘1’ when it asks if you are calling about a refund as it is actually referring to a refund you’ve already requested and will just cut you off after telling you to wait.

First operator put me on hold while attempting to refund, i waited 20 minutes before they said their system had crashed and needed rebooting, but she had processed it. She passed me to another operator to refund another flight I had.

Second operator confirmed the first one had not refunded my flight, it took 10 minutes to refund it. Not sure why they take so long to do this. Avios is already showing on my balance, CC refund not yet,

After asking for information on another avios booking that I had used the website to ask for a refund (I used the previously working Javascript method) about a week ago, they told me that their refunds department is based in Delhi and due to the lockdown there it’s causing problems. They are rerouting their refund queue from 1st March back to UK based operators and this is why its taking so long. Expect 3 weeks.

    • Stagger Lee says:

I did the same this morning for a flight originally due to go this Friday and tried all the combinations of button pressing. Got cut off 4 times but the fifth go the call was answered in about 10vseconds and everything was done in less than 5 mins. Not sure where the call centre was but it wasn’t UK.

My Avios and 2 for 1 voucher were back in my account in about 10 mins and the voucher does have the 6 month extension on so I just need to get something booked in.

He did say it would take about a month for my taxes to come back, which seems a bit long but, give the circumstances, I can live with that.

  • damien says:

I’m trying to rebook one of my flights to xmas time. However the BA rebooking site says there is no availability. I know this isn’t true because it would happily let me book the flight with cash. Is there restrictions on when you’re allowed to rebook your cancelled flight? or is there a value limit? I know the flight just after easter was relatively cheap compared to prices xmas is showing at.

    • Anna says:

Are you using a voucher and was it for cash or award seats? My understanding that the voucher can be used in part payment so odd that you can’t book.

      • Damien says:

Not using a voucher. It was a flight next week that they cancelled. However, I was under the impression that if they cancel your flight, then you can ask to be rebooked to the same destination at another time.

    • Lady London says:

You have to phone. Remember if they do not have flights technically you can request they provide a ticket on another airline to replace. Try to work out what you would want and try to keep it a European airline wherever you can to preserve your rights on the new ticket.

  • T says:

Unsure if it’s already been talked about, but:

    1. BA phone lines are quite quiet now- I got through twice today within 5 minutes of calling.

    2. All Future Travel Vouchers are the original booking’s ticket numbers… unsure if you can use the voucher pre-issuance email, but as long as you have your original booking email you have the voucher number.

  • DesR says:

I’ve received my email on 19/03.20 that my flight on 31/03/20 was cancelled. Ive completed the JavaScript as above to direct me to the refund page instead of taking the flight voucher. I received an email on 19th March “Thank you for your application for a refund” I haven’t had any refund to my account. BA is not answering and i’m frustrated. How long will it take to get my refund? Its 31/03/20 Not even my Avios points are back

  • Nige says:

Where in this process is it worth contacting your credit card directly? I thought there was a regulation that a cancelled flight had to be refunded within 7 days – so if they are telling you that it will take weeks/months, when is it worth contacting credit card?

  • Harry says:

I can’t describe how much this article has saved me. I had a fully refundable ticket in Y class worth about £2k and desperately needed the money back in my account, not a voucher. Tried the JavaScript thing above and it worked, refund is back to me in cash. Tried BA so many times and was ready to cave and accept a voucher until I saw this – thank you so much.

  • Rodrigo says:

Thank you for this. Ive cancelled my flight using the above and can confirm that the avios and the companion voucher was refunded back to my account within minutes. the cash refund im still waiting, it might take few days as its a credit card. but ive got to a page with confirmation of the amount that they will be refunding me plus offcourse the avios and voucher.

thank you so much for this! will spread this to my community
