News in brief:

Virgin Atlantic pushes back resumption of passengers flights to July

Virgin Atlantic has reacted to the new UK quarantine restrictions by pushing back the start of passenger services to 1st July.

The following schedule is currently planned to begin on 1st July:

  • Hong Kong
  • Lagos
  • Los Angeles
  • Johannesburg
  • New York JFK
  • Tel Aviv

All flights will operate daily.  A broader schedule is expected to operate from 13th July.

The airline is not dormant, however, with a fairly large cargo schedule currently operating.

Stelios loses his fight to oust the easyJet board

On Friday, easyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou failed in his bid to oust the chief executive and three other members of the board.

As we covered previously, Stelios was attempting to remove the board in a last-ditch move to block the £4.5 billion acquisition of 107 new Airbus aircraft.  He believes that the company cannot afford to purchase new planes and, more importantly, will not be able to deploy them profitably.

Despite having 34% of the votes via his family shareholding, he was unable to attract 16.1% of the remaining votes at the shareholders meeting.

Stelios has not given up, however.  He is currently offering a £5 million reward to anyone who can link easyJet to the institutional bribery undertaken by Airbus over the past decade for which it was recently fined €3.6 billion.  The only remaining hope of having the Airbus contract cancelled would be to prove that it was obtained unlawfully.

Any idea who the Roughly 6% of easy jet shareholders who voted with Stelios were? His motions got around the 40% mark so not just him and his family.

I’m all agog to see if someone comes forward to Stelios with a reasonable claim for the £5 million. I wish him luck because I think there likely were some illegal incentives for the purchase. But the devil is proving it.

There’s such a big financial inducment, to ‘prove’ earlier financial indiucements, that I cannot see any court accepting it as “the truth, the whole truth, etc…”

        • Lady London says:

A look at cases in the pharma industry such as those against Glaxo GSK and earlier ones Airbus lost would indicate the standard of proof needed.

O/T hello just wandering about the IHG spire choice benefit with the auto renewal of status through end of 2021. I can see my status has been extended but a choice benefit isn’t available. I guess I need to earn 55k points to trigger? Thanks all.

    • Andrew says:

You don’t need to earn any status points. All renewed Spire members under this arrangement will get the choice benefit added but they haven’t loaded them yet – hopefully soon.
